S L O W L Y . . .

Oh - and I’m suddenly VERY aware of my caffeine addiction…

Rachel

you'll get there. i feel bad for you because i've kind of thrown you in at the deep end with no prior preparation of practice...but for that reason if you do manage to get through the whole day...you will have done immensely well especially if you also have to overcome an addictive craving...becomes a daily battle of willpower

but just imagine how good that cup of coffee will taste when you finally get to have one...but that cold glass of water will taste even better

ramadan and fasting does that...it makes you more aware of you're addicted to

Yeah, I’m starting to see that. I can see how it is a “good thing” as it makes you think about things in a different way - appreciate them more.

Lasted 8 hours. Just had a cup of tea at work, start of a 25 hour shift, did it without even thinking.
Will try again on Wednesday, as it's my day off.

So hungry, so needing caffeine…

Yes, losing weight I think.

If you starve you will loose weight no rocket science there.

I always wonder why people have to go on diet plan etc to loose weight.

Gonzy the food link was more about 'mindful eating' rather than just eating healthily, lot's of info on it if you fancy having a gogle. It seems to have a similar foundation to Ramadan; focus and deep thought

When I'm fasting between snacks I try thinking about inspirational people.. Wayne Rooney, Jesus, David Icke etc. Think about their struggles and it suddenly seems easy to wait for the next meal.

Try thinking of the struggle by Mahatma Gandhi as I think he fasted too ...

Theocb- I know what you mean. I was referring to my weight gain being attributed to eating and then sleeping on a full stomach and not giving the food time to be digested. Even though we're eating healthily.
However ramadan as you correctly point out is about modesty. It's worthless if you fast and justify it by having a massive fest at the end. Food needs to be eaten in moderation....we eat to live...not the other way around

Ya, but if you are hungry after long starvation you just eat ... it's like a machine.

Been there done that mine was different from yours as mine has nothing to do with religion. Just plain lazy to cook. I was also trying to "cleanse" the body.

For a year I only ate one meal a day but I did drink liquid though ... coffee and tea. I don't drink fizzy drink.

Lost some weight and save some money ... My body got use to it after a while.

Well, I made it. Not a thing till 21:19

Now full of Thai food. ??

That was harder than I expected and made me realise I have a problem with caffeine.

Huge respect gonzy for keeping that up for the full 40 days. No idea how.

Ramadan Mubarak.

Well done Rachel!!
Massive respect to you for giving it a try.
You deserve a huge pat on the back! It's not easy but with the discipline and self control it feels easier than it really is.
And you've provedone that today!
Oh and it's 30 days....I don't think I could manage 40 days 😆

One month is nothing if you occasionally fast.

You need to do it for 3 months, 6 months or a year.

Not difficult really.

Fair play to you chewkw if you've done it before.
You get sick of the sight of food after a while but at the same time learn to appreciate what food you are able to eat.

After a while you do not eat much but you might be "eating yourself" so you need to be a bit careful there. You eat quality product with high protein then let it be ...

Then you slowly go back to normal meal but try not to pig out coz you will feel the pain ...

But if you can stay with small meal after that then you will loose weight.

Apart from hunger and body craving for food ... the rest is in the mind.

I couldn't do it, I feel awful after 15 hours at work I'd I've had a bust shift with no proper food. It triggers migraines is me and I struggle to concentrate then takes a a day or 2 get back to feeling normal. It's one reason I switched roles at work but that didn't work out as planned so still can for a full shift with just water.

Gonzy, serious question.
I work a rotating shift pattern of 2 days, 2 lates, 2 nights then 4 days off. I remember a couple of years ago, a colleague switching all his shifts to just do nights throughout Ramadan, so he was sleeping throughout the day.

Is this not making it easier for yourself, and would it be frowned upon?

while its not forbidden it is frowned upon as it is like you said an easier way of doing it. usually this type of behaviour is frowned upon as its usually expected that the day should be spent being productive and praying for a more spiritual connection/understanding.
but if he's managed to change his shifts so that he's working nights he can justify it to a certain extent that he needs to sleep through the day...but in doing this he would be neglecting some of his daily prayers

Sleeping throughout the day whilst fastingQuestion: During Ramadan, if one was to take the pre-dawn meal (sahoor) and pray the Fajr prayer, then sleep until noon and prayed the Dhuhr prayer after which he would sleep until Asr, then pray the Asr prayer and, again, sleep until the time of breaking the fast (at Maghrib), would his fast be correct?Response: If the situation is as mentioned, then his fast is correct. However, continuing in this fashion throughout the day (i.e. sleeping) is a waste and neglect on his part, especially since the month of Ramadan is a blessed month. It is befitting that the Muslim seek benefit from that which will aid him by reading the Qur.aan aplenty, working (for halaal earnings) and seeking knowledge. And with Allaah (subhaanahu wa-ta'aala) is the success, and may Allaah send prayers and salutations upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his companions

I can't wait for Ramadan to be over. Every time I put something in my mouth (steady, there) I think of gonzy and feel guilty.

Doesn't stop me eating it, though, but I do feel slightly bad for doing so 😀

How many days left?

So midday and starting to feel hungry

Couple of times this morning went to make a cuppa or thought about picking up a banana. But the thought of Gonzy and being committed to the fast turned me away.

And l have to say it was a different feeling that turned me away as opposed to not eating because of a diet or realising you are eating because you are bored and stopping yourself.

There was more propose behind the thinking of "no don't eat".... I would have been letting down not only myself but Gonzy and all of you who have witnessed me saying lm going to fast

??

update: i've lost count of what day we're on but its been going very well. not been feeling hungry and have been eating pretty healthily. but i am now no longer allowed to fast...for the next 7 days or so due to the doctors orders!
i got bit by something at the start of ramadan and the bite infected me. i didnt notice anything initially and just dismissed it as a normal insect bit and the bite went away but what i didnt know was that the bacterial infection was doing its work in the affected tissue area. so several days ago my wrist and hand got itchy sore and then swelled up over the weekend.
diagnosis is cellulitis, a deep tissue infection and i've been placed on an aggressive dose of antibiotics for the next 7 days which means no fasting while the meds do their work.
i'm absolutely gutted this has happened but i've got no choice...but i will be making up the lost days later on.

@gonzy

Sorry to read this, I hope you're fully healed very soon.

I'm not 100% sure how this works, I've a couple of Muslim friends who've had to break their fast during Ramadan, but they've explained that they will resume fasting again at a later date. Is it something whereby it's down to the individual to do on their own, or is dispensation from an Imam required, or desirable?

thanks Frankenstein

PJM1974 - no dispensation is required. women abstain from fasting when they are suffering from period pains. the same applies for anyone who has to stop for medical reasons. any days you miss you simply make up for them at a later date. also for example the German footballer Mesut Ozil...he has chosen to abstain from fasting during Euro 2016 and has said he will make up for them ata later date...many other muslim footballers do fast and play...that is down to personal choice as it can affect a persons job they make the final decision

it becomes frowned upon when someone chooses not to fast for no apparent reason other than they simply cannot be bothered or didnt feel like doing it and say they will do them later on...people who do this do it because they dont like to suffer the hardship during the longer summer days and decide to do them when the days are shorter.

ideally i would have carried on fasting but i have to take 8 antibiotic pills a day and cant do this on an empty stomach as the side effects arent nice. also the doctor told me that i got seen just at the right time...if i'd left it any longer i would have ended up in A&E and the worst case scenario is that it gives me sepsis

Thank you for clarifying, gonzy.

having to swallow that many pills a day is going to be a massive ballache at the very best of times, I sincerely hope you're on the mend very soon.

Ugh. Get well soon.

How do you reconcile the infection with,

Detoxification Stage 3 (Day 8 to Day 15)
...
During fasting, the body's healing process is at optimum efficiency.

Not trolling, genuine question.

fair question. the detox process works for a lot of people and has worked for me in the past...sadly not this time. the infection is too far gone for it not to need medical treatment

i was unlucky enough to be bitten by something nasty

my antibiotics finished on Saturday...so i'm back on the fasting.
7 days missed so they'll have to be made up for at some point. weird thing is i didn't feel hungry while fasting but while i wasn't fasting....i was constantly craving food.

Eid Mubarak! Just caught back up with this thread and sorry to hear about the infection Gonzy. My wife made it through the month fasting and like the previous couple of years I'm still in awe of her perserverance- 3hrs commuting each day whilst holding down a very senior role at work. I fasted with her for 5 days on my lite version!

thanks Bennyboy1. its been a testing month with the long days and having to juggle late night prayers with a lack of sleep and chasing after 3 over excited kids...4 if you include me!!
we had a good day yesterday as a family and managed to find the time to visit family on my side and the wifes...so all was good.
it was also good that although some people started Ramadan a day later than others...it seems pretty much that everyone celebrated Eid on the same day!

i just need to now find the time to make up for the days that i didnt fast....but my wife was also in the same position for the final week for different reasons...so we can make up for them together at least.

got my first ride scheduled for this weekend...went and stared longingly at the bike last night and all that was going through my mind was "hello bikey...oh how ive missed you!" 😆
