I normally give cake to my form for working hard.

Tomorrow it’s due, but some kids are Muslims who are celebrating Ramadan.

Do I give the cake out and ask Muslim kids to take it home after school?

Or

Give nothing out. So non-Muslims lose out.

Or

Tough you decided to fast so go without and this is Britain?

Or

Eat it all myself?

3 and 4, children shouldn't be encouraged to fast at all but it is ultimately a choice, same as some kids might not want it because they are on a diet, don't like that flavor of cake etc.

It's nothing to do with "livin in bri'un", just simply life is about choices and making them, not about having them made for you.

So "kids there's cake, take it home if you like, what you don't eat will be [s] devoured by me, handfuls at a time[/s] picked clean by the locusts in the staff room."

Ffs are you really asking this question!?!

If you’re that bothered you’d better ask the head or else you’ll be tabloid news in the next few days!

How old? Doing the fast for real is usually done from a sensible age.

Maybe give dates and almonds instead in recognition of the festival?

Instead of cake?

mods - can you have a stern word with rob please?

OP - Either eat it all yourself or give it to all the kids. The Muslim kids can always take it home unless your school has some sort of immediate cake eating policy in place

I’ve bought cake slices and Cadbury’s rolls so it’s in a packet to take home.  Not to tempt them - hence given out at the end of term or even end of Ramadan.

I feel sorry for the kids doing their GCSE’s but it’s a choice and luckily not too hot.

I’m on a diet to become more roadie so I get to watch and suffer while kids devour cake.

Why?  Aren't teachers expected to be sensitive about such things?  Seems like he is trying to set a good example in terms of compromise and tolerance?  Seems trivial, but might not be to 8 year olds.

Take cake and some means of taking it home safely if not consumed, a roll of paper towel and a handful of ziploc baggies maybe.

IME there is always at least one kid in each class who is intolerant to gluten/dairy/nuts etc, and I just base any 'treats' around them, even if it means thinking up something other than a food reward.  'Losing out' is a bit dramatic.

Just tell the kids that as it's Ramadan they'll have to wait til after for the cake, so keep up the good work til then.

Take something that can be eaten now or later would seem the best option. Cup cake, brownie type stuff.

(a) Take cake. Take ziplock type bags. Let the kids make up their own minds

(b) take nothing for fear of offending some, and end up offending all.

your choice. I’d go with option (a).

However. Don’t forget to take sugar-free treats in case there are any diabetics. And gluten-free. And .. oh ffs use your brain

Good on you for being considerate OP.

Don't have any answers for you, but FWIW my experiences tell me that pupils really appreciate it when you take notice of things like that.

^^^ also, I know there are people mocking nut/dairy/gluten free but I think it's nice if youre going to reward kids to avoid feeding them stuff that will give them diahorrea or put them in hospital.

Is the cake on expenses or tax deductible?

Personally against the sugar/sweet reward system though. Why not tally some points towards and end of term reward.

Give them a reward that is not based around food - extra play, go outside and do something etc,.

I wouldn't really know though as rewards are not something I ever saw at my school, unless you felt rewarded for doing so well you didn't get hit by the board rubber.

Fine as long as they don't eat them.  On second thoughts, they are kids, they are bound to eat them

Back when I was a teacher I'd offer the cake/sweets/snacks/whatever around and the students observing Ramadan would say: "It's Ramadan sir so not thanks, I'm fasting" Or "Thanks sir, that's really nice of you".

None were offended.

Cheers.

Tough you decided to fast so go without

Only they didn't really ....

They are caught up in a whole complex chain of peer pressure.

If they don't then it will be "reported" ... and their will be "consequences" for their parents or with their parents ...

Even if little Mo goes home and asks why it was OK for lil Abdul to have cake ... etc.  the thing is that the consequences are not necassarily affecting Abdul so much as his parents.. Abdul's parents might not care if they get excluded from some social event or they might... but putting Abdul into that position might be more a decision of if to respect his parents wishes.

On the other hand there are also kids who can't eat cake for medical reasons...

It goes beyond this .... as an adult I can work out if I can put up with some diahorrea but if you are the parent of the kid this is not about ruining a set of pants but about having a kid as happy as you can with the restrictions posed for them.

Although I'm coeliac my kid isn't but I know a lot of parents who struggle because their kid feels left out and then cheats and then starts to develop long term health issues.

The muslim children need to learn the control required to refuse to break ramadan, so in a way you are helping with their education by taking the cake in.

I don't think they should even be fasting until they are old enough to make a rational decision about which religion, if any, to follow - as opposed to the current situation where they are being 'groomed' by their parents into that religion.

Indeed.  I'd be pretty bloody pissed off if a teacher gave my son cake in school.  Mainly because he's highly allergic to eggs and nuts, and it'd probably kill him.

Food is not a suitable reward for hard work in any case.  That's instilling unhealthy habits.

They shouldn't be encouraged to eat cake either.

In fact, I think the fasting is probably beneficial to their overall wellbeing, whereas the cake is detrimental. I don't get why the general consensus appears to be the opposite here.

I don't see how being urinated on by Russian prostitutes would solve the dilemma.

Maybe simplest just to leave the cake out so those who want it and are allowed to eat it can help themselves? If causing offence is a concern, you could put a flag on it saying “for Christians only” or similar.

Cake? Treats? They should be buying you presents on a daily basis.

I used to give my form a joke or a little song.

Year 8 as I teach 11-18 KS3/4 and A’ level physics/chem, maths and grudgingly biology.

Went down a treat.

Muslim children took the packets home while others ate theirs at the back while watching newsround.
