Don't worry, I won't be making this a regular feature but I did attend another rally this weekend and was playing amateur photographer again. It was the Pirelli Richard Burns Foundation rally in Kielder Forest and it was a beautiful place to spend the day.

This time around there is not so much close cropping on the cars and a bit more scenery. All due to the location which was completely different from Hamsterley. There was no dense woodland and there was no need to be so close to the cars. You could also see where they were coming from and where they were going. In fact, I shot the whole thing with a 70-200mm lens.

The cars were not as impressive this time around in my opinion. Very small historics class and no super fast 4x4 class. Lots of FWD hatchbacks.

Anyway, here we go

As always, any suggestions welcome. If you think I've done anything horrible wrong just say. I'm still learning and I promise I won't be offended!

Thanks

Great stuff Sharkattack, that Mini one is a great capture. Can you selectively lighten up the windscreen a little bit, to reveal more of the driver and co-drivers face?

I also like the wider shots of the MK1 Escort.

Love the mini one, reminds me of my mates old 1293s I used to maintain and service for him. Also looked after a couple of Escorts, a racing Imp and GT6 😆

I just tried and I couldn't really bring out the detail without it going really grainy.

Volvo Amazon !!!!!!

That's exactly what I said! It was shockingly quick as well. No idea what engine it has but it was not hanging around.

Nice Pics.

Do you ever shoot portrait as well? Some of the pics would perhaps look better had they been shot in portrait; mainly the ones where the road is in shot and going from 'top to bottom', rather than 'left to right'....

pics 7, 8, 9 (Escort) and maybe 10 (Focus?) as well as the last two perhaps.

The cars don't look quite a punchy in these pics as your last lot. Probably 'cos it looks quite overcast there, so no sun shining off the paintwork?

Don't know if it would work, but have you tried a polariser to cut through the reflections on the windscreens and perhaps improve the view of the driver/navigator bloke?

You'd lose a bit of light though, so depends how bright a day it is, but I would think that once you have the polariser set for a particular position/viewpoint you should get fairly consistent results.

Nice photos, would love to be that good!

I'd be inclined to photoshop out (or at least cut the colour levels) of the red & blue guys at the bottom of this one (cropping would lose too much of the road, particularly the bend at the bottom):

Not really. I do know what you mean but at the minute I'm just sharing everything online where I think landscape works better. If I was shooting for a publication I'd definitely shoot portrait in the circumstances you mention.

It was actually bright and sunny all day. Hamsterley was very dark and grim with a lot of drizzle. I think the cars don't 'pop' as much because this time the scenery was so much brighter.

Polariser is on the shopping list! I've used one in the past and it was great but I don't have one to fit my current, big, posh lens.

Well you asked for it. I was at this rally on Saturday, round 1 of the Northern Downhill series on Sunday, then at Teeside Autodrome for the drifting yesterday. Tonnes of pics to share!
