Afternoon all,

I need some railway sleepers to build a sandpit in the garden. Am in Surrey - anyone recommend somewhere with decent price / condition please?

search for your nearest agricultural suppliers.

You can get old tarred ones, but I wouldnt recommend them for use in the garden as when they get hot the tar can stick to clothing.

New tanalised (dipped green) pine ones should cost around £16ish. I managed to find some green oak ones for £20, bargin.

I bought a load of untreated oak "sleepers" (they're not actually sleepers) from a place in Notts called Kilgraney. You'll have to do your own googling I'm afraid but they were cheap, good quality, they delivered them and they're still in place, flat and looking nice 2 years later.

old scaffolding planks should be robust enough for a sandpit, without being as hefty to move and cut as sleepers - they're the same length and width as a sleeper, but half the thickness. Scaffolders have to retire them after a certain period so theres always a supply. Try a few a local scaff suppliers and see if they'll let you take a few. Some will have deals in place with local wood recycling schemes

Our local builders merchant, Ridgeons, sells ex-sleepers.
