Why are their no radio stations that I want to listen to in the car? The revolution was good then Steve Penk took over, XFM was ok but now Chris Moyles and a whole host of tools are in. In the car, so no DAB. What now?
I'm asking myself the same question
Radio X sounds like a right cock up. I thought we'd got rid of that nobber moyles for good. I heard it was being pitched at a male audience. I've literally no idea what that's supposed to mean. In my experience men and women listen to the same music. I've also no idea why they needed to get rid of xfm. I'm going to miss Jo Good.
The last few days I've been turning the radio in the car off because of the bilge being played on every station I can get reception for
Radio4
Jools same here, can't believe that FM radio is so shocking.
They have dropped the FM because they have aspirations for more digital stations and the FM bit is only in London now?
Didn't know moyles was on it. Tend to only put it on when Absolute are playing something I don't like.
BBC Radio 6.
No playlist, no adverts, brilliant music and great presenters.
Radio Wales has Chris Needs daily. Great music and he's hilarious.
6 music is ok, sometimes they play some absolute shite though. But they did play Fugazi yesterday so points for that. I like Team Rock on DAB.
BBC Radio 6.No playlist, no adverts, brilliant music and great presenters.
proper LOL 6 music is so dreadful weekdays between 8-5, like radio 2 for punks. the Awful dip shit doing the breakfast show loves the sound of his own voice so much he'd rather talk drivel than play music, the dippy girl that follows is no better with her own take on simon bates "Our tune" bull crap then to top it off you've got ******* smashie and nicey all afternoon.
Nah, 6 is great. Agree Shaun Keaveney is a weapon though.
Oh shush Radcliffe and Maconie are great 😆
Agreed.
I'm looking forward to Moyles being back on the radio. I've ben listening to some of his old shows because i can't find a station i like to listen to in the morning.
Radio 4 is either politicians being politicians, or journalists who have egos that get in the way of proper critique.
Nick Grimshaw is OK, but i'm too old for him and the music he plays.
Radio 5 is a joke these days. Pandering to lowest common denominators.
6 Music - never really got into it.
Most of the time i listen to podcasts while i get ready for work.
I like absolute classic rock, but that's no use to you in the car. I normally go for radio 2 if I have to listen to anything, either that or I load an old phone up with all the tunes I want to listen to and run it through my aux in.
No adverts, no weapons, just songs I want to listen to on a long drive.
Radio 6 can be great, but can equally be shite.
I like Absolute Radio, Planet Rock and (streaming in the office as its not on DAB), The Arrow - no adverts or presenters at all, just back to back rock music
Get DAB in the Car, I've got it in both the Van and Car and couldn't be without it now.
Cost about £130 to convert the Van all in with a standard DIN socket
BBC 6 Music is either glorious or 'wtf are they playing?'. Better than most alternatives though I think.
I can't listen to radio stations with commercials. Limits me somewhat!.
Where did you get that from Simmy?.
I sometimes listen to BBC Asian too, if you can find the right programme that's not too dancey (if that's a word) you can find some really interesting music.
CaptJon, it's pleasing that I'm not the only one looking forward to the return of The Saviour to radio. His Radio 1 breakfast show was very, very good good IMO, certainly a lot cleverer than most other shows. I've basically stopped listening to radio since he left so it'll be goo to have the option again.
Radio X is going to be totsamazballs
Johnny Vaughan declares that “Great Britain needs great banter”. 🙄
Jonny Vaughan I don't like at all, Moyles however I am very much looking forward to listening to again.
Planet Rock
Where did you get that from Simmy?.
Halfords. It's a Pure Highway 240 head unit, think it was about £90 but they don't seem to have them listed online anymore. Along with that was a fascia adaptor and a wiring loom for £10 each then you will need a DAB aerial which are about £15.
The DAB aerial is a magnetic one which I put on the roof at the rear and ran the cable to the front.
Listened to XFM for years. That changes now. Been tolerable this week with no DJs, just none stop music. However if we are talking "ladz banter" then count me out.
Absolute Radio gives a good mix, with no teeny bopper shite. Sometimes have to endure Coldplay though.
If you are in the Midlands they now broadcast on FM - I get reception from just north of Derby, down to half way along the M50
Radio 4 and FIP online for me. I love FIP, no idea what might get played and a minimalist amount of talk
You may be able to argue that Moyles is ok, but who in the name of god would choose to listen to Vernon Kay?
DAB in cars i have had in it a Skoda and a Vauxhall and I have got to say its been rubbish, poor reception keeps linking and theres not that much choice tbh. FM radio most of the commercial ones are dreary
As I've got older I've done the whole thing of realising Radio 1 is actually crap, Radio 2 was more my style and now it's not. Commercial radio music stations almost all crap but then settled on Absolute and/or XFM, but then found they were mostly crap too (well, XFM is still okay at times but reception is poor where I am).
Then went through a phase of Classic FM when commuting just to chill out, but it got all samey.
Now I'm on a mix of BBC Radio London and LBC. Avoiding the bits of Radio London where they play music, and LBC is just all phone ins. Finding the phone ins quite fascinating. A mix of Vanessa in the mornings, Eddie Nestor in the evenings on Radio London and then whoever on LBC and especially David & Ken is a laugh. Sadly with an FM radio I'm limited to around the London surrounds where I can pick these up though. DAB is rubbish. Wish we had satellite radio like they have in the US.
Just bought an original VW DAB headunit, unused, for £50 on the bay.
DAB in cars i have had in it a Skoda and a Vauxhall and I have got to say its been rubbish,
I had DAB in a Vectra and it was next to useless, spent more time re-tuning between MUXes than listening to the thing. DAB in the Mondeo was superb, it Just Worked and I miss it a lot. The tech varies, is what I'm trying to say.
As an alternative to DAB - I stream internet radio via Bluetooth to my car stereo. Was a painful experience when using a Vodafone data connection, but not too frustrating now I'm on Three
Oh and Moyles is a prick
Sadly my Civic has no inputs except one for iPhones (I don't do Apple) and that requires an expensive cable anyway. Integrated unit and head up display so don't really want to replace it with something that doesn't fit in and ideally want something that will display tracks in the head up or sat nav display same as I get for CDs, but yet to find the right thing for it.
Stupidly the car has Bluetooth but can't do Bluetooth audio for music, only phone calls.
I've used an FM transmitter gadget but it's frankly a pile of crap.
First off, any FM radio can be converted to play DAB with the same reception as a dedicated unit, the difference is the aerial.
For my sins I used to love C-O'C on XFM & that was why I first converted to DAB, but he then (like Moyles) turned into a pompass cockbag declaring that they were saviours of the world, but once the variety of DAB is open to you (forget the better reception bollocks) it's hard to turn back.
FWIW I alternate between R6M, R2 & the forces station BFBS, but then I hate commercial ads, I just can't listen to them.
Cheers.
As you are stuck with fm you could try Heart.
I've never listened but apparently they offer " more music variety".
If your tastes include King Tubby, Minor Threat and Gong I reckon you will be well served.
Radio X is as expected
Listened for 15 mins, not one track played
Basically Moyles stroking his ego
More and more often I find myself sticking Classic FM on just because everything else is so shite. For reference my usual music preference is the heavier end of guitar orientated music.
Well that was an absolute shower.
I'm genuinely upset that XFM has gone. Yes you had the annoying adverts and an unhealthy obsession with Everything Everything, but the morning presenters were actually quite funny and it wasn't London centric - I liked hearing about the presenters goings out for a night out in Didbury / Chorlton / City centre.
Can anyone recommend a Manchester radio station of a similar ilk?
My god I hate Chris Moyles.
Against my better judgement I gave Radio X A listen this morning. Sorry but Moyles just doesn't do it for me, really can't see the appeal. Looks like the ipod from now on. Shame they had a good thing there.
Listened for 15 mins, not one track played
Did you expect anything else? That is what Moyles does, he's not a music playing DJ, he's a talker, always has been.
I listened today and quite enjoyed it, same style as his Radio 1 work which is no bad thing at all. He sounded a little rusty at times but I think that'll improve over time, I'll be persisting for a while think. The problem I had is with adverts, I've not listened to commercial radio for a long time and so am not used to ads, frankly they were very annoying.
TeamRock on internet, Planet Rock on DAB, Radio 4 on FM. That's my hierarchy.
In the car I'm more likely to play CDs or music from my phone through the stereo though.
Did you expect anything else?
Honestly? Yes a little. Maybe an older, more cerebral CM discussing the merits of different bands (he must have picked up a huge amount of knowledge over the years).
But no, it was the same old CM waffling with the same old sycophantic band tw*t-waffles.
If radio x really is that shit ( I've not listened) maybe Keavney will be given a job.
I'm lovin' Absolute Radio 90's on DAB at the moment.
Minimally intrusive DJ's and ads. Music from my prime years.
What's not to like?
This has been something I have had issues with for absolutely ages now. I can go my entire drive to work without hearing one song played on the plethora of stations tuned into my car radio, granted my commute is only 20 minutes but that truly is shit.
Mind you, when they do play some music it's absolutely terrible, usually something barely understandable by some talentless ear rapist like Justin Beaver or Miley 'batshit' Cyrus.
Oh and Nick Grimshaw is every single irritating **** on earth rolled into one massive super ****.
I just don't get the whole "they play no music" argument. There are some stations that promise to play a certain amount of music per show/per hour, with a bit of searching you can generally find some to your taste in music and if not there is always Spotify. But why complain at Moyles not playing music or Grimshaw being annoying? Moyles has never played much music and Grimshaw has always been annoying, they're not going to change so just don't listen to them.
It's the same as "Radio 1 play crap music" argument. Well, yes, if you're over 25 they're not paying music aimed at you so of course it's crap, try listening to something else, 6 Music, Radio 2, whatever.
I just don't get the whole "they play no music" argument.
XFM prided itself as being music led. Indeed the strapline for the launch of Radio X has been "Get into the music". So when the DJ spends most of his time talking it kinda goes against how the station evolved and what was promised. There were some good Manchester based DJs on the station who have been replaced with, well, Vernon Kay.
Radio 3. Honestly.
Radio Caroline is still broadcasting online, their ship is currently moored in the Blackwater Estuary not far from where I live.
Radio 3. Honestly.
+1
Also Radio 4 in the afternoon if you're into plays about people with messed up sex lives.
