Mrs. Twisty insists on using phones that have a QWERTY keyboard, must have buttons for typing rather than touch screen.
Is there any practical option she could consider other than the Blackberry KEY2?

As far as I’m aware, all phones have qwerty keyboards, certainly iPhones and iPads do, my work Samsung tablet does, in fact finding an electronic device that doesn’t presents a major issue trying to type info in, like parking meters that use ABCDE keyboards, because the majority of people are now attuned to the qwerty keyboard layout.
As far as keyboards with silly little buttons, I think she’s going to have to suck it up, or else buy a third-party Bluetooth keyboard to link to her phone.

Has she actually tried or does she just not like the idea of one? I thought the same and resisted a touchscreen for ages.

Five-generation Blackberry user. I'd take an iPhone with a keyboard in a heartbeat. I loath typing on glass but work give me no choice now 🙁

As an ex-IT support bod I hated Blackberry keyboards with a vengeance. Probably just my eyesight. iPhone touch k/b is much better (especially the "hole down" for options).

You can connect any Bluetooth keyboard to an iPhone (and probably Android) so just get one, or a case with one built in. There are loads of options e.g.

But as has been said, there’s a reason things have moved on. The slidey virtual keyboard thing especially is a great way to type quickly & accurately.

is that a sort of swype thing for iphones? What's it called? (need to get MrsP on that ASAP)

Settings > General > keyboard > slide to type
Might be turned on by default anyway? Try it!

iPhone I think you have to turn on swipy keyboard.

Best thing on Android is the proper Google keyboard, with swipy as standard.

This is a very good point but good luck with that!

Slidey virtual keyboards are rubbish at typing technical terms, acronyms or anything else uncommon. I have had my s10 for nearly 2 years and would go back to a key2 in a heartbeat (and probably will after my contract is up). I don't consume media on my phone so have zero need for the extra real estate. Fast accurate typing is much better on a physical keyboard.

Me too. I still miss having a physical keyboard. I notably put off replying to some stuff until I'm on an actual computer, where I know before I'd have just typed it on the phone.

I mean, the on screen keyboard is "okay", and it's a better compromise than sticking with a 10 year old phone, but it is more annoying for typing longer replies, especially if you want to use non-standard words.

Likewise. Or at least I'll say, "will reply later when at a PC" if it's gonna be a long conversation.

Folk seem to infer a degree of immediacy and privilege from mobiles. I MESSAGED YOU A MINUTE AGO WHY HAVEN'T YOU REPLIED? WHAT DO YOU MEAN, IT'S ON SILENT WHEN YOU'RE ASLEEP, DON'T YOU CARE ABOUT ME?! Etc etc. Fact is, I carry a phone for my own benefit, not yours.

if you don’t know how to use them properly, yes. Add any difficult but common words as shortcuts. Anything can be added to the dictionary, it’ll pick t up. I have STW in the dictionary and that works fine from the slidey keyboard btw 😀 Also, if it won’t disturb others, there’s the option of dictation, which works incredibly well now, even for very technical words (for me, if you speak funny then YMMV)

IMHO that’s also small keyboard thing and also being able to copy/paste from multiple sources in various tabs. Typing on an iPad virtual keyboard is surprisingly OK. I also have a tiny Bluetooth keyboard which is annoying to type on. Ie Physical buttons don’t really help much for me if they’re tiny.

THIS! It's a work device. "Immunogenicity" does not register on swiping. I type a lot of technical emails. Blackberry was a lot better. The Passport was just brilliant. I have the logitech bluetooth keyboard connected to my work laptop, MacBook and iPhone, but normally I have access to the former when have the keyboard.

Oh yes and mine learnt that "and" was some other common word until I had to manually unlearn it.

Immunogenicity

^^ my iPhone doesn’t mind that one. But in general yes I agree. I usually swipe but then tap out words I know are likely to go wrong.

@TiRed I've just tried it, and it popped straight up once I'd got to the "c" (iPhone). I can 100% assure you I've never typed that word before (don't even know what it means 🤣) so it hasn't learned it from me!!

I don't understand this.

Any words not in the dictionary on my phone, I can type out rather than swipe. It then adds this to the dictionary so next time it will swipe correctly. Do iDevices not do that?

At the 'e' for me.

indeed they do! You can also (as I'm sure you can on Android) have a shortcut for commonly used words/phrases, e.g. type "igy" to expand automatically to "immunogenicity".

Gonna say, I'd be astonished if they didn't!

So this is a PEBCAK issue then?

How about just using voice as alternative?

I find it works 99.999% of the time!

Thanks for the info all.
Another one I found is the Astro Slide 5G which appears to be in latter stages of crowdfunding. However, none of my suggested solutions have quite hit the mark yet.

Thanks for the various mansplanation tips, but I've already moved on from that phase. To be fair, she does type very quickly and accurately on her BB phone.

@CountZero I roo am inclined towards pedanticism 🙂 . However I was attempting to align with common parlance from GSMarena and other typical sources which seems to use the term 'QWERTY keyboard' for phones with mechanical keyboard feature. I did embellish my post with 'must have buttons for typing rather than touch screen' perhaps I should've said 'must have a mechanical QWERTY keyboard, not a keyboard conveyed by capacitive or resistive touchscreen'.
