Quooker - how? boiling vs filtered -same hole!

There you go, my quandary all in 7 words... though in more detail as it's bugging me.

I' installed my "Quooker Pro3 with filtered water" 12 months ago, the annoying beep has just reminded me off that fact as the cartridge needs replacing, but something that has bugged me is how does the bugger work?  (i need to know these things incase it ever goe wrong and i can get a hammer to fix it)

For those that have one, the boiling water and the filter water come out of the same hole via a T-Piece on top of the tank, it has no activiated valve on it as far as i can tell,  so how does the tap route the cold water via the tank without the boiling water coming out- is there actually a valve at the cartridge end that releases to distribute the cold nd then a valve in tank stops the cold going via the tank?

it's bothering me far too much..
