Off to London tomorrow, too late to benefit from any cheap tickets etc. If I buy my ticket on the train will it be the same price as the standard ticket price shown on thetrainline.com? Buying them on the website incurs about £5 in charges and I have to drive to pick them up as my local station has no ticket machine, so I'd rather get them on the train.

Sorry for the rather dull question 🙂

Usually no problem getting the ticket on the train (at least it is for FGW). Remember its a lot more expensive if your train arrives in london before 9am, so pick a later one if you can.

On some lines there's also restrictions on your return time depending on your destination. i.e. off peak returns before 5pm from paddington unless you're going beyond Oxford.

Its a dark art some of it.

If your local station has no ticket office, then you should be able to buy the full range of tickets from the conductor on the train.

You can collect tickets ordered on line from the ticket office even if there is no machine - although I guess that scenario is pretty unlikely these days.

Eastcoast don't charge extra for collection, and you can buy them for any train services.

It's a p*sspot little station, no ticket office or machine, nowt. Bit strange really as there's now a direct service to London! A standard off peak return bought online costs £165.50 to Paddington, I can get on the 7.20 train and come back on any train up to about 17.30. Not what I'd call off-peak, but they do! It must be the same price on train, surely?

Yes, if there is no ticket office.
