Let's say I've got a van.
Let's say I've got a motorcycle.
Both insured fully comp
Both insured as being parked on a public road at my address (I don't have a garage or a drive)
Let's say I decided to keep the motorcycle inside the van to keep it snuggly and dry. ( I do often transport it in the van to various places.)
Let's say some little rascal stole said motorcycle from inside the van from outside my house.
Which insurance would pay? Would insurance pay at all?
I know this is a question for the insurance company but phoning these people is horrible so here we are. 😊
I would use a Kryptonite bolt down anchor and New York chain to stop the little rascals from removing the motorcycle.
I’d secure the steering wheel of the van with a Thatcham approved steering wheel disk lock and then apply for a discount!
My ‘guess’ is is the motorbike insurance for the motorbike as I think the van contents insurance will be minimal unless you requested extra cover, and you may also need to claim off the van insurance is it’s been damaged?
Bike insurance for the bike and van insurance for any damage that may have been done to the van.
You wouldn't claim off your house insurance if the bike was stolen from the garage (you don't have).
Theres another scenario that someone steals the van and gets the bike as a Brucie Bonus
I think what you'd maybe want for peace of mind (given you might also have tools, MTBs etc in the van at various points also) is contents insurance for the van.
May be worth a bit of a read of the fine print of both policies, the bike in particular, to see if anything about how or where it is parked might impact a claim. You can sometimes get odd clauses about what something is 'in'. I had a household policy once which covered various valuables out of the home but had an odd clause about anything in a bag - you could only 25% of the contents of a bag. So my camera was covered but if my camera was in its camera bag I'd only be able claim a fraction of its value
So you maybe need to check if theres anything in the policy about the bike being attached to, or in, something that is itself moveable.

If you state all of those for an insurance discount, you need to use them all the time - fine to use extra security but don't state on insurance enquiry so they can't wriggle out of payment if the worst happens

Trouble is, I can't really go drilling chain anchors into a public road, nor can I guarantee getting the same space every day anyway.
I assumed he meant using them inside the van?
Tell both companies and see who offers you the most £££?
If you are hypothetically keeping the bike inside the van then you probably need to speak to the companies in case they see that as a change in risk, i.e. the bike makes breaking into the van more attractive

Rather than accidentally falling into some uninsurable loophole, I think I'd just get a waterproof cover for the bike, which can be stuffed in the back of the van when not being used.
I got contents cover for my van to cover my (non-motor) bikes when in it, cost about £25 extra IIRC.
They are on the house insurance too, and worth more than a lot of motorbikes, although I've no idea about yours, but I feel much happier being overinsured than underinsured.

Yeah, the trouble is, I live in a tiny street with 8 small terraced houses and I actually have two bikes and the van.
I'm kind of trying not to annoy my neighbours, a bit, by putting the second bike in the van and leaving my commuter out.
