My doctor has took me off Lansoprazole for a while to see if the pins and needles I've been getting is being caused by that. She has prescribed me Ranitidine instead for the short term, which is to be reviewed.
Now here's my question, with Lansoprazole I took one tablet at morning every day. The Ranitidine is prescribed as twice daily.
Now from my understanding, Lansoprazole prevents the stomach producing too much acid, hence the need to take it daily, does Ranitidine do a similar job, or does it just act on the acid in the stomach? The reason I'm asking is, I'm wondering if I can do without the second dose, unless I feel the heartburn coming on.
Any ideas?
How's your B12 level? IANAD. Also, could be low stomach acid.

No idea, I'm having bloods done on Friday, but not sure what they're checking.
Info here:
As people get older they produce less stomach acid. There is a test you can do at home, will try and find it. Mix 1/4 teaspoon baking soda in a glass of water and if you don't burp within 2-3 minutes after taking then it can be an indicator of low stomach acid. Preferably do it in the morning before food and drink for 3 days.
Reading some of those symptoms does sound familiar, however the same few symptoms seem to crop up left and right for other things. It could also be just residual nerve damage.
Edit: random observation time, the only person I know who has had any kind of b12 injection lives in Horden, which is where the GP on that weblink practices. That must be his GP
B12 injections are prescribed widely not just by Internet Dr's.
Would always check b12 levels with pins and needles.
Ranitidine reduces stomach just not as effective as lansoprazole.
It's prescribed twice daily as one tablet doesn't last 24 hours. Whether you need the second dose will depend on how bad your heartburn is. You'll soon know.
Cheers Docrobster. I had Guillain Barre Syndrome a few years back, however I've been feeling a bit more tingly than usual for the past 5 or so weeks.
Lansoprazole binds to the proton pumps that secrete acid, hence the duration of action. It requires a chemical transformation and only works on activated pumps. Thinking about food activates about 80% of these pumps at each meal. The timescale for regeneration is the replacement of the pumps - about 24 hours. All PPIs work like this. The drug itself doesn't hang around in the body for very long, just at the acid pumps. Clever stuff.
Ranitidine is a classic reversible 5HT receptor antagonist with short duration. When the drug is gone the effect is gone. It's effective but was replaced by PPIs as a class due to the better acid secretion suppression and much reduced frequency of dosing and tolerance to missed doses. High doses of ranitidine, given frequently (three or four times per day), have the same pharmacological effect as PPIs but are not given over the counter at such doses.
You can't do without the second ranitidine dose to get the same level of acid secretion suppression as a PPI.
Cheers TiRed, Lansoprazole has been a life changer for me, so I hope I can go back on it.
Right then.
Tried taking my second ranitidine of the day 20 minutes or so before my run tonight, and heartburn started to really bother me after 20 minutes or so of running, would I be best taking the pill as I need it, or just before I head out, or would it be best to take it a bit earlier? Any ideas?
Ranitidine made my heartburn worse - maybe the same for you?
It's been fine all day, but not as effective as Lansoprazole though.
PPIs can also mess up some of your blood electrolytes that just could be involved in the pins & needles - presumably yr doc took some blood at least for routine U&E ? (plus magnesium if s/he's feeling posh))
Lansoprazole / Omesprazole both made me feel crap. Very lethargic and just felt weird. Also seemed to start effecting my vision. Alright with Ranitidine tho.
Drink lots more water helped.. especially before and after eating.
I've had a load of bloods done, not sure what my doc is testing for though, interesting symptoms cloudnine, I've been on Lansoprazole for a few years, but then I felt shit when I first went on them, so not sure if they were part of the problem.
Well that didn't work, back on the Lansoprazole it is!
Lanzoprazole, the devils spawn, i was on it for twenty years and it was beginning to affect my health, stiff joints, hip pain at night and a general feeling grim.
It's tough to stop if you've been on it a long while, but the benefits of not taking it are great.
I cleaned up my diet and made sure i chewed everything well and gave up alcohol. I now keep it under control with Gaviscon and Rennies when needed.
Spooky. I take lanzaprozole to combat the effects of ibuprofen. I need a new hip, but am waiting for a soft tissue lesion on the outside of the hip to resolve before I can have the surgery. I was diagnosed with a cam impingement in 2012 and am now at the stage where the resultant osteoarthritis needs 60mg codeine, 1000 mg paracetamol up to four times a day, and 3 lots of 400 mg ibuprofen. I've been on that for several years now, and take 15mg lanzaprozole. In the last six months I have developed other joint pain, I'm lethargic and constantly tired, and in the last couple of months have had agonising pins and needles in both hands, with tingling loss of sensation in thumb and first two fingers. Thanks to this thread I will be booking an appointment to see the GP on Monday. I'd put the loss of concentration down to codeine, but too many of the B12 symptoms add up.
