Recently (last 4 weeks or so) my PC has started to lag a little on certain events.

Usually when say, selecting a software menu, or changing app focus there's 2 seconds of the sound of the HDD spinning up then the sound of the head un-docking before the PC responds and delivers the requested action.

Ive defragged the HDD, its about 200Gb spare out of 1Tb.
I have all my apps and OS (W7) on an SSD and only data files on the HDD, so Im guessing Explorer is trying to do something on the HDD even when Im only making a request of an application.

Any idea what it's doing? Cougar?
cheers

Although not strictly related to your HDD spinnage, you could do worse than use CCleaner for getting rid of all the daily crap etc. Keeps things ticking over nicely 'n' all.

Where is your swap file sitting, on the SSD or on the conventional drive?

As it's not accessing your HDD much, it might be turning it off.
Go into Power options from the control panel, then Change Plan Settings followed by Hard Disk and up the 'turn off after' time. See if that makes a difference 🙂

Windows by default puts a swap file on all drives, so it could be accessing the HD occasinally for this reason. You can change this.. on W7 right click Computer, go to properties. Then on Advanced tab select Performance Settings, then there's an Advanced tab there as well, on which is a button to change virtual memory settings. You're recommended to have the same sized pagefile as your RAM I think, make sure it's only on your SSD.

well bit odd, but for some reason (Im sure I had one) I had no page file on my OS SSD and on the Server HDD but I did have one on the backup HDD ❓

Problem with my SSD OS/Apps drive is the effin annoying Winxs repository taking up 7Gb!

Anyway, Ive permitted a small (1-2Gb) pagefile on the SSD, althoug Ive only got 1-2GB spare after that.
And allowed system managed pagefile on the server HDD.

Have just done it and restarted, so will see how it handles.

cheers guys.

BTW, google "tfc oldtimer" as an alternative to ccleaner.

If you're short on space, try deleting c:\windows\softwaredistribution\downloads.

I thought it had all the dll files needed for repairing problems?

You can, but it's a really bad idea.

WinSxS holds different versions of .dlls etc that get installed on a system. So when you have two different applications that each require a different version of the same goddamn file, it doesn't explode in a big smeary mess like older versions (especially the Windows 9x family) were prone to.

If it's any consolation, it's not as big as you think. A lot of WinSxS is actually just hardlinks to existing files elsewhere on the system; there's no duplication, but it still gets counted when you look at the size of the folder.

There's a great deal of fundamental changes under the hood in NT6 platforms. It gives me brainache on a daily basis trying to keep track of it all.
