If I bought something which turns out to be faulty, from a non-business seller, who pays return postage?
The seller.
Edit: and don't send it back until you have the slip from ebay detailed your postage. A lot of them get you to return it with a casual "oh just send it back and i'll refund you" leaving you out of pocket for postage.
It's a shame if an honest seller gets caught in that as can be a nasty sting, but usually it's people trying it on. Had a guy send me a wheelset with a dent in the front that wasn't listed. Almost felt sorry for him having to pay that return postage but at the same time he couldn't not know of that dent. /rant
So I pay and then they refund?
Is this set in stone, or more of a gentleman's agreement type thing?
You need to go through the return procedure via ebay and you'll get the postage paid. You need to select the right options eg faulty or not as described. If you chose no longer want it or doesn't fit then you pay postage.
No, they pay for the postage through Ebay and you get a slip from ebay with your postage on it. You don't pay a thing at this stage.
As above, you'll need to raise a dispute most likely.
It's made trickier by the seller stating no returns, so you don't have the usual returns options available. So have to contact seller first (which I've done, just waiting for a reply).
"Contact the seller" and pick the option that states item is not as described.
Ebay automatically open a case for you and a good seller will accept it and generate a returns label.
If he doesn't accept it then Ebay step in
