replacing with 1/4 round not an option, not really after something in a tube like sika etc.
is there a product that you use more like traditional putty but that can take a coat of paint after a day or so?
thanks
i do accept that whatever there is may well be in a mastic tube...
There is stuff out there eg https://www.sealco-scotland.co.uk/product/endurance-glazing-putty-replacement-310ml/
Depends how thick you go as to whether you can paint it next day but it should be good to go within a few days.
For all glazing applications I use this.

I've tried a few options in the past,I really couldn't get on with any of the tubed stuff, just couldn't get a good finish. In the end I favoured the Toupret mastic putty, very much the old school linseed oil style only.. drier. Lovely to use, dries a little quicker and accepts water based paint.
