Due to not taking enough notice when starting the previous thread I am now asking the following about the correct island.
On hols in mid August and just happen to be staying very close to the Canyon Demo center in Cala D'Or.
Intending to hire a road bike for a day or 2.
Has anyone used them, or have any info about them (apart from what is on the website)?
Do I need to book much in advance?
Any rides to recommend from Cala D'Or (2hrs max to keep the family happy)?
What gear do I need to bring from the UK? Assume bib tights, tops and water bottles. Shoes, or do they have a good stock?
Is it worth hiring an MTB for a day?
Will I die from the heat?
Shoes and pedals and helmet it will be hot
Planning on riding early morning so missing some of the heat, but under no illusion that it will be a sweaty, hot experience. May leave the hire to the second week to acclimatise first.
From memory you need to wear a helmet at all times when riding, else risk the Police asking you for some money
It will be hot, shoes, helmet riding gear and bottles. Went down there from Port Pollensa one day, some nice riding round there, honestly, the roads are easy to follow and well maintained. Get out sharp before you cook, was there in May and it was hot enough for me (25-27)
I hope you meant shorts!bib tights
Thanks for the comments so far.
@FuzzyWuzzy: Yup bib shorts, not longs. Lovely cool Assos things too that I picked up from the York Cycle Rally.
Have seen that they hire shoes and helmets. Does anyone have experience of these, or am I better off taking my own?
Off to look on RideWithGPS to see if there are any suitable routes planned, or to make my own. The ride to the monastery looks like a good one.
Anyone know what the MTBing is like in that area?
I haven't hired bike shoes/helmet before but I wouldn't ever want to either. Firstly a helmet, urgh even if the pads were washed no thanks. And shoes, maybe I'm fussy but it takes a while for me to find a comfortable shoe and then a few rides before it feels right (and that's not even factoring in the hassle of setting cleats up).
Fair enough, was thinking this too. Wife won't be happy taking up essential packing room 😛
Does anyone have experience of the hire company itself, or recommendations for alternatives in Cala D'Or?
A quick update after I remembered about this thread.
The guys at Canyon.Base were great (I was served by Carina, one of the owners) and sorted me out with an Ultimate CF SL with Di2. They also sorted out my eldest with a Katusha cycling cap ( the team base themselves from the Club Robinson Hotel opposite when in Mallorca) for free, and offered a discount if I return.
I took my own shoes and they fitted spd pedals. They had other pedals.
Bike was in stunning condition and it rode like a dream. It just wanted to go faster and faster. I'm now saving.
They have a good range of bikes, but would recommend booking in advance to make sure that they have your size.
I'd definitely recommend them.
The riding was very good and the drivers were very considerate of cyclists. Only problem I found was that the routes I planned on RideWithGPS ended up on sections unpaved roads. It's worth checking out in a bit more detail using Google streetview. The paved roads were all in very good condition.
I tried to ride up to Sant Salvador, but was stopped by a local hill climb event. Everyone was very apologetic about closing the road, but I got to have a look around some very interesting race cars.
Another ride was westward along the coast which was very scenic and visited a number of resorts/beaches I wouldn't have seen otherwise.
We're going back to the same resort this year, so will be hiring again and will make it up to the monastery this time.
