Which day is furthest from Christmas, the mid point Christmas day to Christmas day or the 26th December? I answered the 26th and therefore I am a girl (his other half answered the same as me) so what is the STW consensus?
The 26th, obviously. Christmas day is Christmas day.
It's like saying London is the furthest place away from London because you'd have to go all the way around the world to get there. Sort of.
stupid question
The 26th, obviously. Christmas day is Christmas day.
Not the mid-point of Christmas day, the mid-point of the year - like, around the beginning of July.
stupid question
stupid reply 😉
By my calculations, the mid-point of Xmas to Xmas is 182/183 days away from Xmas.
The 26th December is one day away from Xmas.
I am not a girl. Does this matter?

Have you figured out a way of going back in time?
I am not a girl. Does this matter?
I think the fundamental thing is do you look 'forward' to Christmas - hence 26th of December is 364 days from next Christmas or do you look back and forward and use the 182/183 thing?
Have you figured out a way of going back in time?
No. Do I need to?
We need to know whether the question was asking which day is furthest from next Christmas, or which day is furthest from a Christmas ... ?
Is it a leap year? 😉
Have you figured out a way of going back in time?
On Boxing Day do you say "Man, it has been ages since Christmas"?
My answer is correct for the wording of the question.
"Have you figured out a way of going back in time?"
Yes travel faster than the speed of light, although I can't take all the credit for working it out.
Yes travel faster than the speed of light, although I can't take all the credit for working it out.
Still wouldn't work. Sorry, couldn't work.
Define 'furthest'.
On Boxing Day do you say "Man, it has been ages since Christmas"?
No, but I would say "Man, it's ages until Christmas". Time only goes one way, you're living in the past, maaaan
Continuing this logic, you're always furthest from Christmas. Except on Christmas.

Well as you can't travel faster than the speed of light you cannot know what would or wouldn't happen if you did. You cannot predict the result of achieving the impossible.
the result of achieving the impossible
err, I think the point with the impossible is that it can't be acheived.
'the result of achieving the improbable' maybe 😉
I've always considered my birthday to be on a good date. It's near enough as far away from Xmas as possible and means presents are spread at handy 6 month intervals.
No, but I would say "Man, it's ages until Christmas". Time only goes one way, you're living in the past, maaaan
The question only asked which was "further".
So if we're not considering the past then presumably if someone said to you:
"Is Christmas Day near Boxing Day?" then you'd respond "No, there are 363 days between Boxing Day and Christmas Day"??
Is Boxing Day near Christmas Day... Yes?
Is it on a conveyor belt?
It's near enough as far away from Xmas as possible and means presents are spread at handy 6 month intervals.
is it on Boxing Day?
Is Boxing Day near Christmas Day... Yes?
Exactly.
And is Christmas Day near Boxing Day?... Yes.
Is New Years Day near Christmas Day? ... Yes.
Is Christmas Day near New Years Day? ... Yes.
Which is nearer to Christmas Day: Boxing Day or June 24th? Boxing Day.
Question answered.
June 24th - I love this day!
Sorry, what was the question?
Question answered.
Why can't we have a philosophical debate about time?
Poo to you, gavel man. 🙂
I'm worried that some of you may have the right to vote, or to breed...really.
Why can't we have a philosophical debate about time?
You can.
But you'd still be wrong 😀
You can.But you'd still be wrong
Pfft, given the amount of literature on the 'passage of time' from both a scientific and ontological perspective, I don't think the STW forum is the place where it's finally decided what is 'right' and 'wrong'... come to think of it, what is 'right and wrong'...
*wanders off*
If you are driving from Cardiff to London, and you have just passed J15 (the last Swindon exit) are you still near Swindon?
If you are driving from Cardiff to London, and you have just passed J15 (the last Swindon exit) are you still near Swindon?
Not if you can only go in a direction away from Swindon. 🙂
Assuming all other junctions are closed, then yes you are geographically near Swindon, but not practically.
So that's why I said that to answer the question you need to define 'far'.
I'm 43. If someone asked me if I was 42 then I'd say, "Near enough."
If someone asked me if I was 50 then I'd say, "Not for ages."
So far, time has only been moving in the direction we call forwards and I would consider myself to be closer to 42 than 50.
In a similar situation, I'm sure all of you would too...
24 December, surely.
The clue is in the question ... "which day is furthest FROM Christmas".
From implies the Christmas past.

we need some input from people in distant universes
