I'm aware that many will say GIMF but what way would you recommend for getting the stuff off my old PC to my new 'un?

buy an external HD caddy and plug your old HD into the new one copy across what you need. Then format the the old HD and use it for external backup or storage...

If windows, the built in Easy Transfer makes it dead easy.
