nickhit3 - Memberhave they? can you link me to this list? I'd be keen to see it.
I meant in their warning emails.
Could you not issue a short warning posted on the actual thread aswell, where someone will be likely to see it.
I have been warned for being an argumentative **** on threads before.
Incidentally what's the uptake like on the PM feature? Are people actually using it?
I've used it a fair bit. Takes a few too many clicks to get there, but the email link you get takes you straight there - you'll be able to confirm that.
The problem with forums is that they are generally privately owned but we all feel like it should be a meritocratic equal rights thing..
EG the owners and mods can do what the **** they like, but we all think that the constitution of federation space applies regarding free speech, fairness and equanimity applies.
The truth is, if you don't like it tough shit. That sounds mean but I mean that as a fact of life. Take your bannings learn from it and move on, there is no rhyme or reason.

Had to google him.
Why is he wearing what appears to be a special needs bump cap?

I always wished Simon Bates would give a list of the swear words he was warning me a rented VHS tape would contain. It would just be nice to hear Eddie Murphy's vocabulary coming out of Simon Bates' mouth.

ok i laughed. bravo.
but lets be real for a moment, it's pretty clear that "mods have always made it clear which language has been unacceptable" is categorically not the case, not to a regular user. If you just want to laugh about it then great. I'd rather hope you were more interested in making this forum better for us all. It's clearly a serious issue when you're happy to expel someone for 7 days who was ironically carefully self censoring to avoid causing offence.

but I can understand why it's necessary to restrict it. Look at mumsnet.
yeah, loads of adults talking with other adults in a way that adults sometimes do, imagine that!
I realise of course that this decision lies with resident grumpy himself rather than the mods. 🙂
Shall we all email and call mark and ask him if we can please ing swear? 😆
I'd recommend trying to get over this and move on with your life pal.
Perhaps its worth a little reflection, they didn't chop off your hand, they prevented you from posting on one internet forum for a week. Its not that atrocious
Why is he wearing what appears to be a special needs bump cap?
So he can't hear how average his voice is when he's turning Nat King Cole songs into mediocre shite.
they prevented you from posting on one internet forum for a week. Its not that atrocious
A WEEK?? I'd rather lose a hand, personally.
I thought it was to cover surgical scars?

Mark stopped us from issue out that punishment.

This - its something people forget. I think the forum policy on swearing is too harsh. However the rules are the rules so you have two choices - accept them or leave.

accept them or **** off surely?

We can? Awesome.
A week's not much. You really need to try harder.
I'm not sure as I'd agree it's a "serious issue" when it's an isolated incident for one user who by your own admission didn't see the emails and didn't read the forum T&Cs. Granted, no-one probably reads any T&Cs ever anyway, but with all due respect that's your failing and not the site's I'm afraid.
In any case, I'm not sure what the "solution" would be. As I said, if for whatever reason you're breaking the rules (even innocently) and not responding to emails then we've little other option other than to issue a ban. It's not something we're ever "happy" about, it's a last resort and I'd rather we never had to do it. If you've any better ideas I'm all ears.
I can wholeheartedly recommend putting this thread through Pornolize.
The language is a country mile over the accepted line on here, mind you. Parental Advisory and all that...
Ridiculous as a culture we have such an issue with taking offence at words and cotton wooling kids who know all the words anyway.
Anyway, other solution is to make STW an 18s and over site? (or over 13/15 or whatever is acceptable for the words). 😀
I don’t think having a swear filters is a problem,
We are allowed to use such terms as chocolate starfish, rusty sheriffs badge. And joke about visits to centre parks and the oxo tower and terms like playing the rusty trombone. As long as they let us have our bum fun they can’t be bad.
yeah, loads of adults talking with other adults in a way that adults sometimes do, imagine that!
The difference is the target audience.
Mumsnet's userbase is, pretty much by definition, entirely adult. STW's is not, it's supposed to be family-friendly. Your 12-year old daughter could be reading STW, but if she's reading mumsnet then you've got more to be concerned about than a couple of swearwords.
I'd recommend trying to get over this and move on with your life pal.
you must find yourself saying this alot on STW.
This - its something people forget. I think the forum policy on swearing is too harsh. However the rules are the rules so you have two choices - accept them or leave.
I have no problem with rules on forums. That this one is full of holes and makes no sense to the average user is my issue and i felt it was worth bringing it up here on the forum, it turns out this is the only way i got my answer(s). I emailed the moderators and got no response. I was shown in the two emails from the moderators where i had sworn, but not shown why what I did was worse than anyone else who was swearing even when i asked.
The truth is, if you don't like it tough shit.
thats quite the catch all. great.

You've read them now, then? (-:
I emailed the moderators and got no response.
I can only apologise for that. It happens sometimes, we get a number of emails and stuff can get missed.

You now know where you went wrong. You have been told by a moderator that he despite your previous warnings he felt your punishment was harsh.
What more do you want from this thread.
The way you're talking, anyone would think you'd spent the last 20 years as a political prisoner on Robben Island.
Well, someone had to.
They really ****ing didn’t.
Ridiculous as a culture we have such an issue with taking offence at words and cotton wooling kids who know all the words anyway.
Its not the taking offence thats the culture. To have a full range of expression you need to have words you're not supposed to say so that the full expression of your rage, passion, anger or threats are available to you- that you break societies rules (or even your own rules) by saying them because you're that blinkin angry.
I can't remember the source of the story (the Allusionist probably) but there was an example of a school banning their pupils from using the words 'Swear Word'. In the absence of actually being able to swear kids had started the the phrase as a joke - self censoring - 'You're a swear word' - but over time it started to become less of a joke and more pejorative and a tool for genuine bullying.
The school playground seems to be a factory for new pejorative terms - turning sensitive descriptions for things into insults - 'Spastic' became a pejorative term in the playground, so did 'Special Needs'. Playgrounds are just one big incubator of insults and winter vomiting bug. Bloody kids.
You can't call other posters *s but other than that, it does seem harsh for the odd * or * or even *******.

i dont even know anymore
'You're a swear word'
Heh. I use "oh, swearwords!" as an exclamation fairly often.
The school playground seems to be a factory for new pejorative terms
I've said this before, but really it's about context and intent rather than a few letters strung together. I could call someone a hatstand and with sufficient venom behind it there would be no ambiguity as to its meaning. And if people did it in sufficient numbers, hey, calling someone a hatstand is offensive. Meanwhile, I can cheerfully call a mate a see you next Tuesday and he wouldn't bat an eyelid.
A sold', a sold', a soldier I will be
This right here is a fine example of why self-censorship doesn't work.
(-:

IIRC they tried to educate kids about it by wheeling in the TV stand and showing them Blue Peter covering the heartwrenching life of Joey Deacon who suffered from birth with severe cerebral palsy.
And the kids responded with great compassion. They stopped calling each other spastics.. and started calling each other "Joeys" instead.

Context is everything and I'd suspect that in most cases its
Context + [the random factor of someone who reads the thread being motivated to report an instance]
We refer to the a small number of forum members as 'the moderators' but the reality is the forum community is self moderating. The 'mods' are just the people who have the keys to forum to implement that moderation when its notified to them.
If it seems inconsistent its because the forum is inconsistent - each thread and each post has its own audience. The mods don't see every post but forum members don't see every post either.
Its a bit sore for someone who's been 'moderated' for behaviour thats they've seen go unchallenged elsewhere but its two different audiences - its completely pot luck as to who reads what you write.
I got pinged for swear filter avoidance ages ago, when I thought what I was doing was self moderation...had no idea there was a swear filter in the first place, and had no idea that the usual form was to just type the swear word and if it didn't get hashed all was sweet.
Likewise I've learned over time who are the argumentative types, who gives good advice, which mods are up themselves. You know, the forum foibles, customs and practice that give it a vibe.
Put it down to learning and move on. Or, you can argue for things being done differently. But don't expect it.
which mods are up themselves.
You know who the mods are?
I lose track of which mod did what. If only there was simple way of remembering who was the most Draconian

Yep, that was my era and exactly that happened in my school.
Your 12-year old daughter could be reading STW
Except that she's under 40, female and doesn't work in IT.

I've always tried to be careful - but if I have got a 12 year old daughter then STW is probably how I'd find out about it 🙂

Daddy???
Is...is... that really you?
I was excited yesterday as on another forum I called Farage a ****. It looked so much nicer than 4 little stars.
A female daughter? Who knew there was such a thing.
So what's the conclusion?
Are we allowed to (fully) star out our own swear words or are we required to swear and assume that the shitey swear filter does its ****ting job?
this whole thread offends me
fluffy bunnies.
What about regional sweary words?
Can i legitimately come on here and call
someone a dobber, a fudnugget or a boaby basher?
Am I allowed to say **** petrol?
So what's the conclusion?
calling the OP a snowflake? hasn't happened yet.
**** petrol
absolutely not. Other seabirds are preferred.
haha brilliant
It's a fine line and i applaud you for jumping over it as far as you possibly can.

Worth it. Genuine LOLs. 😆
starting a gofundme for your family km79 to cope with the loss. RIP.
It was very funny.
However, much as I was loathe to do it the consequences were predictable, given that he served a ban a fortnight ago for the same thing.
C'est la vie, as they say in Germany.
so will he be banned again as a repeat offender? I mean, the C word... jeez. not an asterisk in sight to protect its modesty. asking for a friend.
so will he be banned again as a repeat offender?
Suspect that the hammer has already swung.
is that why i cant click on his username..? curiously i cant on yours either Perchypanther. hmm.
Never seen in the same chatroom together.
curiously i cant on yours either Perchypanther
'coz I is banned for swearing innit!
That just means he hasn't got a email address in his profile. Understandable really.
Here, I get new release emails and this one came in today -

"Jesus" is censored!
I know Jesus Jones music is offensive, but its the word Jesus. At least we can say that on here.
Don't try to be clever to get round the filter. Type what you want and let the filter do its job.
As someone who has been banned twice for "swear filter avoidance" (one week and three weeks each IIRC, the first time I never hit the edit button in time or even got the courtesy of a reply when I tried to explain it was a mistake) I would caution against doing that. It's exactly what I have done and on all occasions the filter has failed due to the S****horpe effect.
I find it odd that I got a ban for using colourful language yet the posters that inspired my last post before the ban got away with advocating violence towards animals and using the mauling of a young girl to prove some stupid point.
Incidentally, this was the next thread I read.. 😆
Should I report it? 😉
You just did. Fixed.
Maybe we should all swear, get a weeks ban and give the Mods a week off?
God no, deep down mods love the attention. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Isn't this swear filter avoidance? 😉
I recently got an email telling me off for swear filter avoidance, no ban though. Hopefully that was due to the mods seeing that i was explaining what i had been called, and not aiming sweariness at anyone here.
So maybe they can take context into account.

It's already been mentioned on this thread but I'd be happy with a ban on swearing directed at folk but OK otherwise.
What about anagrams?
Useful for certain heart troubles and circulation, aren't they?
analgrams? available for hen do's, PM me for details.

But ref, I was swearing at myself!
Look, speaking as a moderator I think we should be able to use our own judgement.
After all, that's what we're paid for.
I've got Flashy again in the secret Santa btw.
Any ideas?
