You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Off to Belfast next Thursday for my visa appointment at the US Consulate, but I now need to travel to Spain the following Tuesday, and as processing the visa takes between 3-5 days and then a further 2 for the courier to return it I appear to be in a bit of a sticky position. It's not as if it's a fun-filled trip I have planned. My mother passed away and I have to retrieve some important documents from her estate to obtain probate. Is it possible to obtain a temporary emergency passport without voiding my real passport while it's with the Consulate? Thanks in advance!
You can legally hold 2 passports for exactly this sort of scenario
Google suggests it is possible, but you need a good reason:

https://www.britishpassportsuk.co.uk/second-british-passport-application.html
Note that the second link is a company who will do the application for you, no doubt at a cost...
I have two passports.
It's unlikely you'll get 2 for this reason.
I need letters from the editor to get mine renewed.
I travel globally at short notice and to places that don't speak to each other.
Flying to Spain & back before Thursday would seem the most practical option.
For a short while longer all that travel will be within the EU, so I think you should (in theory) be able to do it with photo ID, rather than a passport.
Driving licence ought to be sufficient, but maybe check with the airlines concerned first (in these troubled times).
sorry for your loss.
Many thanks to you all. Mulling it over I think the best chance is to appeal to the US Consulate officials' collective good nature (stop laughing at the back) and return to Belfast to collect on the Monday rather than them send it via courier.
This whole episode has been quite a trial. We had no idea that Mum had effectively sold the house to an equity firm and now we have until Sept to sell, but in order to receive probate we need the Spanish will, which is with her Spanish bank, who refuse to answer any emails or phone calls from either me or the solicitor.
