The old people wont like that!
That bomber is owned by the BBC... 😯
UKIP are launching a protest with BBC NEWS at the thought of two more foreigners entreing the uk.
Fighter jets were scrambled from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, Scotland
was there nothing nearer to scramble? apart from the one in Lincs

Yes, I thought QRA South was at RAF Coningsby.
Also, that bomber is HUGE!! Makes the Tornado look like a childs toy beside it!
I'm surprised the bears are still airworthy after all these years.
"close to British Airspace" - so, not actually in it then?
Oh - and FWIW, this is a regular occurrence over the N Sea - don't know why it's so newsworthy this time.

It wasn't all that long ago that Canberra's were retired from service after something like fifty years, and the Americans are currently refitting B-52's with rotary bomb-bays to carry cruise missiles and such as internal payload, while still using the underwing pylons.
They're somewhere around sixty years old...
Beautiful bomber ... I like!
One, two, three!
Left wingers the bear has arrived!
Hurray!
😆
Turbo props not jets as far as I know ? looks like they will be in service until 2040
not a bomber
Yesterday's mission lasted for over 12 hours; the operations room was both calm and focused
"Red leader, trade approaching angels one-five at six o'clock"
It's all very impressive stuff, a twelve hour mission flying from Lossiemouth to Bournemouth and beyond. Back in the 1980s when this stuff was last popular, you'd only expect to get 300 miles max out of a Lightning before returning to base. Missions of under one hour endurance were commonplace.
Those TU-95s were developed from captured WW2 era B-29s...quite remarkable aircraft in their own right. They have amazing endurance and hold prop-driven speed records.
I was chatting to an old Lightning pilot a couple of weeks ago and he said just over the hour at high altitude but on low level stuff they could only stay up for 16 minutes !
Bournemouth? Maybe they meant Brighton and knowing Putin's views maybe he was sending a message to the Brighton crowd. An admittedly mixed message if he was sending in Bears 😉
Hahahaha!
He should just give up with the posturing and just embrace his inner fabulousness.

'cos it's down South where all the important bits are.
Seems such an odd story, but no-one appears to be offering explanations about why the Russians would do this. But apparently it's normal? ^ Are they getting lairy? If so, why?!
That was why the jet was flying over my work, the pilot wasn't hanging about I thought the calor gas canisters had blown up!
TU-95? still? probabaly desperate to retire.

This is being reported as abnormal because there has been an escalation in this type of activity, with around 3x as many intercepts in 2014 as the year before. So yes, a bit of sabre rattling going on here, and it is thought to be due to the sanctions imposed over Russia's military involvement in Ukraine.
If they were on their way to bomb the Dolphin Centre in to rubble, then crack on I say.

Several reasons, firstly the Russians want NATO to know that an air force to be reckoned with again after many years of under investment.
Secondly, to simply label those Russian aircraft as "bombers" is misleading. They're also conducting reconnaissance gathering electronic intelligence and measuring the RAF's response time. They'll also be shadowing any Russian Navy units and providing top cover.

I'm still gobsmacked that the U2 is still in use. It's 60 years old this year
It's had it's wings clipped since it fell off that bike though.I'm still gobsmacked that the U2 is still in use. It's 60 years old this year
