If it's not staged.
I like the pussy riot collective. They have serious minerals.
Makes you realise how those who moan about the Polis in this country should realise all things are relative.
Pussy Riot come across as rather " stroppy teenager" but I respect their desire to fight against the powers that be in Russia. They have bigger balls than a lot of men for sure.
I expect they knew that was the reaction they'd get but good on them.
If it's not staged.

Those yelps of pain are pretty damn genuine.
Hopefully these "real men" will try to attack people who can fight back next time and get what they deserve. Putin's Russia is just a fascist state where opponents are put in jail and journalists are murdered if they dig too deep.
Just watched that 😯
Feels like an attitude that comes from the top.
I can imagine Putin* telling his minions to whip down any protest nonsense 🙄
*probably with his shirt off 😉
You can take Putin out of the KGB, but you can't take the KGB out of Putin...
Appalling, even though they were trying to provoke a reaction, and deeply stupid of the Cossacks.
Thanks for posting DezB ...appalling is right.
Cant pussy riot just go away? They are cringeworthy at best. It'd be doing the world a favour. Sick of hearing about their name.
Whip them harder for **** sake
The intellectual has arrived

hope so....
Balaclavas = perfectly acceptable headwear for winter Olympics spectators.
A very brave bunch.
It doesn't take much for Russia's mask to slip.
I agree with Hora. I'd encourage you all to do some research about the freedom fighting Pussy Riot before reassessing your opinions. Russia is backwards and Putin is dangerous, I totally agree with that but the media has glorified Pussy Riot into something they are not. Points of interest.
Chicken carcass inserted into body in supermarket "in protest"
Orgy in a library "in protest"
Sacking the two inprisoned members because they were getting too famous!!
As a prime minister they are certainly not a group of people I'd be inclined to listen to
point of interest: cops using whips on women half their size... for what?
Never said that their treatment was justified, just that they're not the messiah's they've been portrayed to be. To me their previous actions have totally discredited any message they are trying to make.
It looks to me like they are pretending to give a message whilst really trying to become a version of 90's Russian Spice Girls.
For all the slagging off alot of people would have put alot of work into the Russian winter Olympics, alot of people have trained years to compete. They come across as absolute amateur pop idiots. Ill-conceived self promotion.
Plus thats not whipping, its not even M&S special whipping. Its half-assed move-whipping FFS. Seen how the BRITISH Police dealt with the peaceful Countryside Alliance in London a few years back? That was disgusting.
Pussy Riot are just a bunch of Bridget-Jones-eqsue muppets in childrens presenter clothing designed by Timmy Mallet singing lame songs in an effort to drum up business.
People Like Greenpeace, jesus now I take my hat firmly off to them. Shot at, rammed you name it.
It looks to me like they are pretending to give a message whilst really trying to become a version of 90's Russian Spice Girls.
You know they've spent two years in prison, right?
For breaking the law.
What do you think would happen to a group of people that acted that way in this country. You cant expect people to accept that behaviour just because their country is governed by a tyrant?
Hora, do you have issues with women? I have no idea what pussy riot are like nor do I really care I respect their right to protest without being attacked I wonder why you do not.

😆
Hoar, do you have isdues with women? I have no idea what pussy riot are like nor do I really care I respect their right to protest without being attacked I wonder why you do not.
Everyone has that right. Pussy Riot abuse that right and often deal with the consequences. I am yet to see/read about a meaningful, organised and effective protest by Pussy Riot. Just media exposure for being silly.
They went into a church (sacred to some you know) and sang the lords shit (etc).
Ranging on a spectrum: In our country you'd be taken to the Maldives on a correctional learning experience through to, flogging or being executed nearby in many many countries.
One was released on parole, two served 21months (probably because they set it up/the idea behind it).
Hora, do you have issues with idiots?
No but when I see grown men posting on a forum in shock and horror over self-promotional idiots trying to disrupt hardwork and cost with not even a good attempt at hijacking then I'll post. Is that ok.
I have no idea what [s]pussy riot[/s]EDL are like nor do I really care I respect their right to protest
Do some research? Maybe...
Same applies to edl I'm afraid, although I have protested against them.
Hora, nothing you say or indeed misquote makes a lot of sense to me I think you need to calm down.
Can't help wondering if their name could have had a better translation.
maybe
fanny fight
gash battle
quim quarrel
anagallis_arvensis then don't make bizarre and insulting insinuations? Saying I have a problem with women based on my dislike for a band?
What does concern me is whats happening in the Ukraine.
To be fair, their music is pretty shocking. Maybe that is what upset the angry cossack most.
I have no idea what pussy riot are like nor do I really care I respect their right to protest without being attacked I wonder why you do not.
This exactly. If that video is for real (And it looks it) then they did nothing other than use words. Whatever those words were (I don't speak Russian, sorry) they didn't deserve that beating at all.
anagallis_arvensis then don't make bizarre and insulting insinuations? Saying I have a problem with women based on my dislike for a band?
no its based on your apparent approval of young women being kicked and hit with whips because they have the nerve to be self promoting. Obviously you think these women should know their place.
Seems strange that they chose an empty area to protest and get a whipping, maybe if they'd of chose somewhere more public the Cossacks would've backed off?
I find myself agreeing with Hora.
I too find thier immature stunts just publicity seeking trolls for to expand the name of the band and no more. I'm not saying they deserved a whipping, no no I'm not.
🙄
Orgy in a library "in protest"
I'd buy that for a dollar. Any whipping involved then? 😀
Pussy Riots methodology (right down to their name choice) are in danger of trivialising the issues they are protesting against and alienating the mainstream Russians. If I was Putin they would be my ideal "opposition" . Run a country like he does and protesting opposition is inevitable (he knows and expects this) - he could not have scripted a better bunch of flakes to take up the mantle.
I think they're ****ing fantastic. The more they get on the news the more they're a thorn in Putin's side. The 'self-publicity' thing is pretty much bullshine imo, the downsides are definitely outweighing anything they're getting in return.

It needs extreme methods to get reported on though. They're not hurting anyone but have found a way to get international attention.

you do wonder if they work better abroad than at home.
I'm really enjoying this winter Olympics. What they are doing just irritates. Its soo bloody amateur as well, if they popped up on the XFactor- how long would they last as they come across as one of those cringeworthy-joke acts that go on there.
Indeed, according to my Russian speaking colleague with a Russian wife (who is bit more in touch with genuine Russian feeling than me) they are not appreciated by the bulk of the Russian public. Being considered 'cool' by a niche group of youthful Russians and westerners is not going to change the national political scene in any meaningful way.
In regards to the sexual side their protest/movement that was in response to the ladies of 'Putin's Army' and their stunts. Amazing how context can make sense of things.
Pussy riot = Global news?
Some of the uptight responses in this thread reminds me of all the fear and loathing from Middle England that unleashed in 1977 when the Sex Pistols were doing there (VERY amusing and entertaining) thing.
they couldnt have wished for a better allegory of the russian government than a bunch of meathead bullies, whipping some defenceless women
theyve succeeded in their objective of gaining publicity in their campaign against putin
the recent anti-gay legislation and putins statements linking gays to paedophillia are a reminder just how nasty the man is
Meanwhile in other news.....
If you've got a point then make it.
whipping some defenceless women
That was hardly whipping wasn't it? If Max Mosley received that on his weekly visit he'd be demanding a refund.
The point?
Here is another example of how we increasingly sensationalise the trivial and ignore the important. A minor incident (how long was the clip?) that is hardly newsworthy in itself let alone against the real geopolitics that are playing out in Kiev for example where people are losing their lives etc and we get agitated about it.
Perspective please.
Look further down the page for the Kiev thread if thats what you're interested in talking about.
Thm whats going on in Kiev doesnt make anything else less wrong or unimportant.
Hora, your desire to sexulise the issue is quite odd imo.
I'm properly amazed at some of the replies on this. I wonder if Emily Davison* ever existed at all.
* I bet you have to google her
but sometimes by focusing on the mistreatment of individuals it exposes the overall problem.
Look at all the images that have swayed public opinion, tank man in China, the napalmed girl in Vietnam etc. By showing individuals it allows us to empathise far more than a photo of 10,000 people.
"When one person dies it's a tragedy, when a million die it's a statistic'
and hora, I can't think you really believe that state sponsored beating of peaceful protestors is somehow giving them what they deserve or not worthy of comment.
your desire to sexulise the issue
Calm your plastic-liberal self down.
THM 3 million children die every year because they dont have enough food, why arent you discussing that?
http://www.wfp.org/hunger/stats
Calm your plastic-liberal self down.
I'm calm thanks, its you that seems a little hot under the collar.
I had to google her but she was who I thought!!
Hora, what's a 'plastic-liberal'?
Thm whats going on in Kiev doesnt make anything else less wrong or unimportant
Correct it doesn't. But there are far more important issues right now than a silly protest met by heavy handed policing.
Pussy Riot do not have the right to protest they live in Russia where protest is illegal , that is why they are incredibly brave . They need to do acts which attract international media attention and are non violent as that attention and non violence is the only reason they are not dead in a ditch. The attempts to dismiss them as attention seeking spicecki girls really just reveals how unwilling some people are to acknowledge that some people have principles .
The Cossacks whips are not soft play toys and don't take much effort to inflict pain .
Cant argue with that thm. But on this thread we were discussing the pussy riot issue.
I was going to ask what a plastic liberal was too.
Always think it's hilarious when people denounce protesters as publicity seeking, seems like everyone should protest quietly at home, in case anyone notices.
teamhurtmore - MemberCorrect it doesn't. But there are far more important issues right now than a silly protest met by heavy handed policing.
Can you please let us know in what order we can discuss current events so we don't commit such a faux-pas again.
and hora, I can't think you really believe that state sponsored beating of peaceful protestors is somehow giving them what they deserve or not worthy of comment
and again the 2004 Countryside Alliance march where the State sponsored Police hit alot of people/provoked and conjolled.
Pussy Riot do not have the right to protest they live in Russia where protest is illegal , that is why they are incredibly brave
Going into the Orthodox church and saying god is shit? You know the Orthodox church is a big thing in Russia- it was before Stalin before it was crushed but cameback.
As I said- do that in any church around the world and it'd range from community service (it may even be classed as a hate crime here now), right through to being executed in many countries.
You say brave, I say in the very least very disrespectful. To some it would be blasphemy and to others there would be a lynch mob-death for them.
What's a 'plastic-liberal'?
I think it is way worse than that 🙁Putin's Russia is just a fascist state
and again the 2004 Countryside Alliance march where the State sponsored Police hit alot of people/provoked and conjolled.
and here you are 10 years on commenting on a bunch of yokels who wouldn't accept a democratic decision by their elected parliament so clearly you believe there is some merit in peaceful protest and that it should be allowed to pass off without heavy handed state intervention regardless of the gender or political views of those involved.
[note some of the above language may be deliberately inflammatory, much like hora and his Max Mosely post]
As they say themselves they are a group that dedicates itself against " the rise of the corporate Political elite who's power is directed against basic human rights and civil and political liberties"
Sounds like a silly little protest to me. 🙄
dont know much about the russian orthodox church do you hora?
http://uk.reuters.com/article/2013/05/13/us-russia-gay-idUSBRE94C0AX20130513
[plastic liberal mode]
Id say that your responses have more than a whiff of the classic male insecurity feeling threatened by self-empowered women [/plastic liberal mode]
and here you are 8 years on commenting on a bunch of yokels who wouldn't accept a democratic decision by their elected parliament
OK, being a bit picky here, but it was about making a voice heard against the potential decision. Much like the anti-war protests that happened around the same time. It was not about not accepting a decision which had not yet been made, just voicing opposition to it.
That said, I agree in full that peaceful (as the CA march was) protest should not only be allowed to continue unhindered and unbeaten, but should actually be encouraged, as it engages more people in the political decisions that run a country.
Wtf has the countryside alliance got to do with it. There's right and wrong, hitting and kicking women for singing and dancing is wrong, I fail to see how you can claim otherwise you plastic fascist.
anagallis_arvensis - I fail
thats right.
fair do's cfh.
Much like the Iraq thing it was pretty much a foregone conclusion though 🙁
Going into the Orthodox church and saying god is shit?
You might want to read up on the incident.
The goal may be worthy indeed emsz, but their methods may still be silly at times. No contradiction there.
Wow your debating skills are really coming on Hora.
hitting and kicking women for singing and dancing is wrong
Can't argue with that really.
Unless you're hora, or the like, of course...
Wow your debating skills are really coming on Hora.

Do you know the song words that they used and sang in there.
