Ive found a fork on facebook market place that ticks my boxes.
Its Oop north, so going to see it is a non starter. Im happy to buy it with what ive seen, the details posted and the correspondence with the seller. (no different from ebay really?)
Whats the best payment method?
He doesnt have paypal (apparently, is this a red flag in itself?)
are there any other options?
Paypal offer a "direct to bank" service, called Xoom, but i dont think it offers any form of buyer protection?
Its not crazy money (£150), but i would rather do what i can to ensure neither of us get stung.
Thanks!
O
I'd only buy off FB Marketplace if I could go and pick it up myself.
There will be other forks from other sellers who will accept PayPal. Wait for one of those.
Leave well alone.
Yea, what they said, there's zilch buyer protection on Facebook. I'd chance it for something cheap/niche, or being maybe being sold via an actual facebook page. But not off a generic marketplace listing.
Another option is to ask if there's anyone on here that might be close enough to go and collect . . . but then they might like it and take it for their own bike instead
thanks team. Thats as i thought. Its taking a lot of will power, but ive sent him a
"you can set a PP account up in 30 secs on your phone, get on it"
not having paypal is dubious, avoid..
apparently hes only a youngun, so hes gonna ask his mum if she can set one up for him when shes home from work.
Open up coms with the seller, if they seem legit they probably are.
Good luck
FB marketplace is a home to a sub species of special humans. I only ever venture there if buying or selling involves cash and collection. Even then it is a world full of oddballs and scammers.
maybe I've just got lucky
I ve sold loads on FB marketplace but always face to face at local supermkt in cash.
Scammers are v good at what they do.
I don't have pp eBay or anything like that.
maybe I’ve just got lucky
Certainly it is so.
I represent the Prince of Djibouti and due to the threat of regime change he needs to remove his money from the country. For your help in transferring $6008297 he would be willing to pay you four percent of the transaction amount.
If this is something you can help with we would simply need the transfer of a small sum (€5000) to cover setting up of the bank account and procurement of a passport and other paper work.
Western Union or bitcoin transfer is best.

Alrite M8. Sounds perfect for my m8 who is working on oil rigs. Can you deliver to Preston? I'll give you a code that will pay when courier collects. thnx
The one that tickles me is the people who get a call from "HMRC", who report that there is a warrant out for their arrest, and the quickest and easiest method to stop this process is to buy $500 woth of iTunes gift cards.
I had a chap buy my carbon 26" frame on FB last year. He said he was making up a hybrid for his brother and had a set of 29er forks and wheels, and just wanted a 26" carbon frame so he could raise the bike up. WTF? Anyway, he got another mate to drive him 50 miles to see it, then said he only had half the money because he had to pay his mate extra money for driving. FFS, that's not my problem, so I told him to stop at a cash machine in the next town. Sure enough he got the dough and no doubt had fun making his mutant 26" 29er.
Some people try it on but do come good.

If he's too young to have a paypal account, he's too young to be selling a £150 fork on Facebook. Is he expecting payment in Haribo?
There's no age limit on Paypal as far as I'm aware. You need a phone number, an email address and a physical address. You don't even need to link it to a bank account or card unless you're making payments.
Walk away.
where is Oop North? Guessing doon sooth for me
Can someone from here to the transaction on your behalf
I've brought 2 things off FB...fatbike minus rearwheel then delivered by anyvan...that went without a hitch....then I brought a set of fatbike wheels with hope fatno hubs..delivered...again perfect
Maybe I got lucky...

Not really, you ended up with a fat bike.
A fat bike, whose original owner was foolish enough to leave their bike locked by it’s back wheel presumably 😉
😂😂😂😂 @ those two previous posts!
As others say, i like marketplace, as well as FB groups, they're great for finding stuff nearby, but as others say, i wouldn't be rushing to buy long distance, unless they were pretty much golden, and i wouldn't go near anyone who isn't using bank transfer or paypal, just asking to be ripped off.
Just keep searching for the right one if this isn't doable, bargains do come up now and again, probably one of the last places you get bargains on there just now.

Anywhere north of Birmingham as far as I’m concerned. I was surprised when my satnav managed to get me to Birkenhead docks once, most of my maps just say ‘Here Be Dragons’.
I've sold and bought dozens of bike parts on FB marketplace, lots of it posted. Never had a problem.
First thing is to see if their profile checks out. Have they sold anything before? Is it MTB related?
If there's anything suspicious walk away.
Another tactic is to ask for their phone number and talk to them. You can get a better idea of their character that way.
I had a similar problem albeit slightly more expensive goods. My solution was to arrange the shipping myself, post the shipping doc to the seller (Validating at least some form of address). He sent me picture of my shipping doc with his goods, I wired him the money, stuff showed up a couple of days later.
Maybe too much faff for £150 though.

To be fair, my 26" steel SS hardtail runs a rigid carbon 700c fork, so he probably wasn't talking complete nonsense.
so he probably wasn’t talking complete nonsense.
Agreed. I did question his intent before he set off to have a look, but his rambling explanation went rather leftfield so I figured I'd give him the benefit of any doubt.
Just remembered that last summer I'd given up trying to find a decent 26er for 11yr old monkey for fair money, then up popped someone on FB about 20 mins away, selling exactly what I wanted. A quick text convo with what turned out to be the boy's mum convinced me it was a good 'un and it sure was. Had a good chat with her when collecting, and her son is now mates with my son at his new school.
Ive bought quite a bit of marketplace - never had a problem
