If purchasing a new item (bike part) from a private individual in the EU.

Do they send as a gift and will I be liable for further customs/taxes on top of the purchase price?

Thanks

Being a gift doesn’t remove any tax obligations. Just get them to fill in the paperwork properly and be prepared to pay the VAT and import duty

It’s not the purchasing that incurs tax and/or duty. It’s the importing (which you are doing).

there's some useful info here

https://personal.help.royalmail.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/106/~/help-with-customs-and-sending-items-abroad

even if its sent as a gift, the value has to be declared and VAT and other charges will be levied depending on the value.

To be honest, its probably easier to the get them to list it on ebay with international postage and ship it through their global shipping programme.

Ive sent a lot of parcels as a private individual to the UK. Its for the older A2 which are nla or oos via the UK dealership.

Get the person to fill in the post label online then drop it into a post office. On the custom form, put the weight and item description (used bicycle part for instance), select miscellaneous or gift (ie non commercial). Then pick a low value.

This has worked for many parcels I have sent without issues, none have been intercepted.
