[Closed] Puppy training advice

Don't ride with the puppy until at least a year old. Vets usually do a puppy introduction thing, where they get the puppys together so they can socialise. Go to a local dog training classes and get the citizenship awards, don't give up I've seen so many that give up and a year later have problems.

I was talking about toilet training.
In terms of exercise it will mainly be coming with me on runs and days on the fells but that will only commence gently from around 9 months onwards.

We have local puppy training classes arranged beginning in a few weeks once his innoculation period has finished.

Toilet training or any training is relatively easy as long as your message is consistent. As its young give it somewhere to go, newspaper. When it has been or if you see it needs to go take it outside. Always take it outside about 15 minutes after its dinner so it can relieve itself.

Just be consistent with anything you do. Get it socialised with everything, buses, loud noises, take it the shops, meet people, go to classes. Introduce it to as much of the world as possible.

I think the most important bits are remembering to let it out for a wee in the night at the beginning, taking it for a wee first thing in the morning and getting it used to weeing when it goes for a walk.

What worked for us was picking a method and sticking with it rather than scattergunning it when there were set-backs, which was tempting.

If your puppy looks like this, back away slowly and find the nearest fire extinguisher:

... and if you go to your local vets or dog training, they will give you all the help you need, even with toilet training. 😉

Lots and lots of praise/treats when it hits the paper target and try and link a word with the deed ie 'piddle'.

Take it out lots in the garden and repeat the 'piddle' command. It will link wee/poo with food/praise and perform.

Gradually reduce paper in the kitchen to a single page.

We have a sprocker pup its a dog and he's 5 month old now Ive had allot of dogs mostly labs and spanials ive always had bitches in the past and i must say this one is the first one ive ever had that just seems to be hard work to toilet train getting it to do its buisness on the paper most the time was ok but even now he still doing the odd pee in the house! he just seems a bit slow but i guess you just have to hang in there 🙂

Thanks everyone. Yes we are giving him loads of opportunity to go but he is still at the stage where hasnt control yet so we simply pick him up when he shows signs and take him outside and leave him on the ground for a minute then bring him in. We have to turn our back on him otherwise he continues to play 🙂

Watch out for suspicious circling of said puppy (pictures) and also for whining. These are usually signs. If you let him out and he goes, _BIG_ praise for doing the right thing (pictures) and he should soon get the idea.

Is he crated at night? We found that helped a lot with ours.

Yes he has a crate at night and during the day he uses it for naps and we seldom close the door during the day only for his own safety. He takes turns with our Lakeland who sleeps in the cage sometimes and he sleeps in her bed. They get on very well.

Spaniels rule! Looks like yours will grow up to be a good looking chap. Here's my little girl, probably about 18 months old in this pic.

I remember toilet training was a pain for a few weeks, but the advice above all works. Praise when they get it right and you get to know the signs of an impending poop and place them onto paper / outside beforehand.

Watch out for sniffing - mine often circled the room sniffing the edges before she wanted to go.

Also try associated a word with it when praising - we rather imaginatively used 'wee-wee'. Now she knows what that means and will almost go on command when we let her out.

Watch for sniffing, circling as has been said. We tried the newspaper/puppy pad thing but they just got eaten. The first few weeks we just took him outside and waited, and waited. Even if he did a little wee or poo we'd wait a little longer and he would inevitably go again. Ours is nearly 5 months now and has just about got the hang of wees outside, poos have never been an issue. Sometimes I'm sure he just wees in temper if he's been told off. I think some pups just take a while to get it, he'll get there! At 11 weeks ours was still peeing pretty frequently in the house unless we got to him to get him in the garden first. It's only in the last few weeks it's stopped.

He is nearly 6 months!

We have 3 cockers. The first is always the most difficult to train. You'll love him its gonna be great. All 3 of ours have completely different personalities 🙂

If they have an accident in the house, use bicarbonate of soda and water in a sprayer to neutralise the smells, or it will do it again in the same spot. Don't use disinfectant, the ammonia gives it the same impression. Take it outside every 30 mins, say 'busy busy' when it goes to the loo. Give it a treat. It wont take long at all. Most of that info comes from the father in law, who brings up guide dogs from 10 weeks to a year old and it worked for our dog.
