So he's been with us a week today, now 12 weeks old. He is a bundle of ignorance when it comes to recall training, to the point where I wonder if he's deaf 😆
He will sit and wait (ish but getting better each time) for his food and go in his bed but shout him and he just wanders off. Any tips?

Daft question but does he know his name?

My second dog was much harder to train than the first on recall. He was too easily distracted, I taught him in an empty field, if he got distracted by something you need to make more noise (ie a fool out of yourself) so you appear more interesting than the distraction. When your recalling is he rewarded with attention, treat, toy?

Recall will take a few weeks of work just to get it started. Then, it will take constant reinforcement in the park (or wherever you walk him) for months and months. Look into puppy classes - not sure how much they help with "training" but they will give you some techniques to be going on with. They'll help with socialisation mostly. You'll also have to take him somewhere where he'll meet "nice" older dogs. Be prepared for some of them to be a bit mean to him - it's all part of teaching him boundaries. And very few dogs will properly go for a puppy.

To be honest, once you get him to stop toiletting indoors, if you get recall, walking calmly on a lead and behaving himself around other dogs and people, you hardly need much else.

He nailed the paper with a few wees last night so his aim is finally picking up. He's got three weeks yet before he's fully vaccinated so no walks other than the garden at the moment. Will miss him when back to work next week that's for sure.

Get to puppy classes as soon as you can. Really helped with our dog and although she still does what she wants ( :|) some of the techniques taught have stuck and help out a lot.

Seem to remember the key was never to shout but speak firmly and always reward good behavior with a treat.

Rule the nose, rule the dog! Do not get shouty ever and reinforce all but biting with a SMALL treat. You will get there! 😀 Obviously eventually you will not need the food and then it will become even more of a treat, repetition and routine will see you through.

Take to a big wide open space, let off lead and walk away. It will follow, call it and give it a treat when it arrives. Do the same in the house. It'll come.

It should link it's name to treats/food/praise. When ever it's eating constantly repeat it's name. Strokes and cuddles, yep, keep saying it's name. Giving it treats for doing a trick, yep, repeat it's name. Soon enough if you utter it's name it will come running.

Oh, don't forget you need to smear your own poop all over the walls in what ever room it sleeps in. This helps with um, err.......well it just helps, honest. Just do it.

Oh, reported you for a puppy post with no photos.

Training from day one. Praise for going to the loo in the right place. Name saying to get his attention. Play biting and teaching not to etc.
