And a free envelope of blancmange through the post if anyone can tell me which pub this was filmed in. No cheating now:

Don't Dictate - Penetration

and TBH Anarchy in the UK still resonates despite the butter adverts

I miss those days, waiting for Thursday when Sounds came out and the running to Discount Records to buy singles, and then albums when I started work, happy days indeed

Right tent, wrong desert Steve 🙂

It's somewhere in Manchester, close to a world famous bike race that has just announced it's forthcoming 2012 incarnation.

F*cked Up

Ah man... I caught them at Reading, was left with a reasonably strong belief that Father Damian is the best frontman that's ever lived (certainly I hope never to hug a bigger sweatier man), and a better understanding of exactly how far I can fly when a pit suddenly collapses right in front of me, but with no recollection whatsoever of any of the music after the opening bars of Queen of Hearts. So it was probably great

Penetration - I bought 'Moving Targets' recently which now includes 'Don't Dictate' as an add on and I have to say I was slightly disappointed. Saw them live at the time. Was in love with Pauline but not anymore!

metalheart, search 'no authority but yourself' start at part1 and work thru them, it's interesting stuff I think, the history and Dial House. I think it was filmed around the time Steve wanted to do a Crass revival and it includes that bit I think, Penny didn't want it to happen, but was reminded that he'd let someone he didn't even know perform their material (Jeffrey Lewis i presumed), so he could hardly refuse Steve. there's lots of other stuff aswell.

ah right, their home town, I stayed well away from there, had a GF who was a nurse at the nuthouse, she wasn't far from being a patient :-0

I'm sure the fall filmed something at the wellgreen, mind my memory is hazy these days, Si Wolstencroft's family were from around there

my former band from when i still lived in the north east used to rehearse in polestar studios, owned by pauline and graham from penetration. 2 of the nicest, kindest most generous people i will ever meet.

anyway, i was more into the US stuff (and more hardcore than punk rock tbh), with this being probably my favourite song from any 80s band:

Scared to Dance and The Absolute Game by The Skids.
NMA were almost Goff rather than Goth but mostly Crusty.
I was always amazed at the "Kitbag Krew who went everywhere with those army duffel bags. Some of the South London ones always carted these big bags around even at London gigs.
Moving 10 years on from Punk still listen to Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Fields of the Nephilim, Play Dead and The Sound.

You've gotta take the rough with the smooth. Perhaps the unlistenable shite makes [s]Battles[/s] Rites of Spring sound even better.

Haha, I saw them at Rebellion Festival last year, he seemed to spend most of the set wandering about in the crowd. I wanted to hug him, but I had my best band T-Shirt on!

Joseph Porter was/is well into trainspotting, we all took the piss out of him for the lack of "danger/suspense/excitement" and suggested that a bit of nakedness would spice it up. So he clocked the 08.31 the next day with his trousers round his ankles and admitted that it added a certain je ne sais quoi to an otherwise dull pastime.

Wow.
I still remember loads of us sending off our money for the 'Little Touch of Harry' tape, memorising the booklet and listening to it regularly for years.

It's a bit knackered now, half the speed and full of drop outs. 🙂
Still got the booklet if anyone wants a copy - email in profile.
Sadly the sticker died years ago with an old guitar.

Couldn't believe it when I found it on youtube and haven't stopped listening to it again since.
It's probably my favourite album.

The end of 'Probably won't be easy' still makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck, 20 odd years later.

Burundi Drumming! That's what it's called. I recall the first drummer in Death Cult was a Burundi Drummer and got sacked for that reason, within a few months (I'd forgotten what the style was called). I Presume Ian Astbury had already decided he wanted to become an American stadium rock band, even at that early stage and there was no room for Burundi drumming.
I think this is good, Tazzy won't, because he was only into EARLY Adam Ant. 😉

Tazzy, seeing as you have some knowledge of drumming, was Southern Death Cults Aki Nawaz a Burundi Drummer? Or was that just bonkers drumming with lots of tomtoms, percussion and stuff?

I loved Mutiny in Heaven. And the first Nick The Stripper 12" b-side. Cant for the life of me remember what it was called... Kathy's Kisses! I also loved the first Nick Cave album From Her to Eternity.

Tazzy - no you don't. Modern music is largely crap. Saw the March Violets at the 100 Club or the Marquee (I think) and Killing Joke at the old Hammersmith Palais. Talk about menacing. That gig was a little scary even for me..

Jazz Coleman ended up in New Zealand at one stage. I stayed at a backpackers called 'the Crossroads' on the the great barrier island off North Island. Great people who knew Jazz (a neighbour) but not much about Killing Joke.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, not read everything. My old fella had a compilation LP called New Wave, with the Damned, Talking Heads, Ramones, Patti Smith, Richard Hell, Runaways etc.. all I can remember was the cover was red and had a punk spitting beer at the camera on the front. Probably released on K-Tel or something 😉
Anyway...

Not read all this. Think I'll go through it at my leisure . Looks like some great stuff. Especially the SLF. never saw them live. I was meant to. But may have been a bit keen. High-sided my GPZ into burtonwood perimeter fence at a pretty hefty speed instead. A&E wasn't that interesting 🙁

lots of good reminders in here for me too.

NMA, SLF, Killing Joke, Banshees, The Clash, Southern Death Cult, Three Johns, Skeletal Family, Sisters Of Mercy, March Violets, Play Dead, The Mission, FOTN, The Damned, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, QOTSA.
Early-mid 80s Bradford was a great place to be; I saw Southern Death Cult & NMA at Bradford uni in 1982.

Kings Of The Wild Frontier, with the exception of a couple of songs, is excellent. Especially this:

Saw Bauhaus on the Burning From The Inside tour. Most boring gig ever, until I saw Gene Loves Jezebel...

I'm going to wear my DM's to work tonight and have a really strong craving for cider and mushrooms.

I'm still lliving the 80's now though I do like alot of new bands today but I guess when you were younger the bands felt more real to you then.

BLITZ, VIOLATORS, BLITZKRIEG, ATTAK, GBH, INSANE, ULTRA VIOLENT, CRASH, ONE WAY SYSTEM, CHAOS UK, DISORDER, AMEBIX, CRASS, CIRT, FLUX, CONFLICT, CHUMBA'S, DISCHARGE, ICONS OF FILTH, ANTI-SYSTEM ,ANTI-SECT.... the list is endless

MINOR THREAT, SSD, NEGATIVE APPROACH, CRUCIFIX, BAD BRAINS, NAPALM DEATH, HERESY, SACRILEGE, ELECTRO HIPPIES, CULTURE SHOCK, GRAY MATTER, EMBRACE, STRAIGHT AHEAD, YOUTH OF TODAY, ANTI-CIMEX.

in the 80's we used to go to alot of gigs in Leeds though there was alot of animosity between Huddersfield and Leeds punks and skins so we used to keep a little quiet. Brannigans in Leeds then moving on to the Bierkeller, Adam & Eves and then the Duchess.

We used to travel about quite a bit to many other northern towns and cities, usually Manchester, Liverpool (Planet X), Wigan, Preston, Sunderland, Newcastle and down south quite a bit to Leicester, Coventry, Nottingham, The Mermaid in Brum and a few places in London like the George Robey, Clarendon Ballroom, SOAAOS.

Late to this thread. Late 70's early 80's was a great time for music.

I used to tag along with mates to the punk gigs in the 70's but never really liked the music, like some on here i was more of a Gong & Hawkwind fan, but liked the energy. Saw most of the main punk bands bar the Pistols in small venues. Anyone from Brighton remember the gigs at the New Rodent ?.

I started at Liverpool Uni oct 1978, & discovered a club called Erics within a couple of days. Thursday nights were free to members, the likes of Pink Military, Teardrops, OMD etc. One night Erics would have the Damned playing, the next National Health, the next Here & Now. Most nights either in Liverpool or a short hitch across the M62 to Manchester there'd be a gig worth seeing. It was no wonder i failed after the first year really 😀

Albums from that time i still play now ... any of the Cab's up to Microphonies, Hai/Crackdown is my favourite era, their gig at Jenkinson's in Brighton has to be my best gig of all time. ACR's first is an all time classic. Slits, Killing Joke, Shriekback, SPK, TG.

Also lot of reggae ... Misty, Aswad, Steel Pulse, the Trojan & Greensleeves 12". It seemed to be the soundtrack to the early 80s free festivals.

Tazzy - glad to hear you've had a good music day. Still can't believe anyone else has ever heard of Furyo or In Excelsis. Very cool!

When the 'Carnival of Damocles' EP came out my girlfriend at the time did a great painting of the cover.

She was expert in other areas as well...!
