On the news today, Xbox can use £132 a year in standby mode, holy cow a very hungry device. Can be fixed by going to Settings>general>Sleep mode & start up, then Change Sleep Mode to “Energy Saver”. Allegedly that takes it down to £4 a year.

If setup after May ‘22 it should be the default, but worth checking anyway. Hope that helps!

Switch it off at the wall and it takes it down to zero.

Honestly? Kin ell, I know its convenient for doing quiet updates but that's nuts.

EDIT: looks like a fair bit less than that but still a decent amount.

£5/month isn't massive, but that's just one device. I have... three Xboxes and a PS3 in here, plus who knows what else vampire-tapping on standby. Most of which I'm going to unplug tomorrow.

The only trouble is that complex (consumer level) electronics really don't like power being cut/ restored over and over.

How much are xboxes these days?

That said, I do agree with the sentiment behind turning off devices in the context of actually saving power/ the environment/ money.

It's a PC. A very specialised motherboard and OS but a PC nonetheless, it's fine. They only use that feature to quietly install updates when you're not using it.

but that’s just one device

Is the bigger picture.

XBOX, printer, Switch, amp, Wii, router... That's a fair amount, actually curious to know what they collectively pull.

Source for that claim?

I'm trying to think of anything that's eaten itself due to power interruption in the last (handwave) 20 years. PCs in the middle of Windows Updates perhaps, or something doing a firmware upgrade. Correct me if I'm wrong but it's unheard of with games consoles>

We've gone to power off rather than rest mode on the PS5. Not sure how much it saves but probably similar.

By far the biggest draw for us now is the kids and their desktop PCs. About 120W each, together with the monitors.

On the console itself (Xbox) it says it can use up to 20 times more power in the non-energy saving mode. I did notice that the fan on the X was spinning pretty much constantly in the Instant On mode and it’s off now…

I've just gone and changed mine to Energy Saver mode, since Halo Infinite was so poor the console rarely gets used anymore...

Old Xbox 360 is unplugged, unless someone want's some darts action ! I've got my daughter to unplug her newer XBox and the PS4 as she's not currently using them, although then add in her gaming PC and my son's gaming PC. She at least powers down to standby at night, son would leave his on, so I've got his smart plugs switching off as a double check during the 'working day'.

How does that work then?

I think thats new. I looked around online and in all the screengrabs i found google images, that line wasnt present.
Either way, ive updated my settings!

11W vs 0.5w on "proper" standby! thats from Microsoft themselves!

Mode Power consumption
Regulatory Standby: 0.5 W
Instant-On: 11 W
Navigation Mode: 27 W
DVD Playback: 33 W
Blu-Ray Playback: 39 W
Streaming HD: 33 W
Streaming UHD: 36 W
Active Gameplay: 62 W
