Seems a few useful tools quite cheap (for recent times) on Screwfix at the moment.
I’ve been wanting a thicknesser for a whil, and with the saving I made I spent it all on an oscillating spindle.
They get decent reviews, obviously not pro level but should do a hobbyist.
No kidding, those prices are amazing.
Hmm… maybe I need a new thicknesser.

I've got the oscillating spindle and belt sander version (which is only a little more) and it's great. 👍
yes I went for the combi version, mainly for the tilt capability.
The triton thicknesser is one of the generic ones. I've not used it so i cant judge
In use you shouldnt really be taking any more than half a millimeter per pass, which makes the job longer, but it wont strain the motor or prematurely dull the blades.
Also a handy tip is to use a piece of conti board as a bed to feed things through on. It gives it a longer table which goes a way to preventing snipe, and the smooth finish helps the material slide through easier.
Anyone got any links? Everything is coming up at the usual price for me when I search the site.
Cheers.
they aren't showing as specifically discounted but the price shown is about £100 less than any other site if you've been looking at them for a while these are usually north of £300 since lockdown

I think they must have made a boo-boo. I looked yesterday & pretty sure the price was a lot lower. Maybe they realised & have corrected it?
The Titan planner thicknessesor is not bad price at £179.99. If in stock locally.
Showing £389 here too. Great tools to have. I coughed just over £500 on my Makita earlier this year (paid for by a selling a painting) and am amazed how much I use it. I simply buy battered lumps of wood post from the scrap bin at the timber merchant, use the table sa to cut them into rough planks and the the thicknesser makes properly useable timber.
I am sure proper wood workers will tell you the full benefits but for me I spent £30 buying this 'waste' timber. The p[hoto is after I had passed it through the thicknesser a coup0le of times just to be able to see the raw wood and try to identify it.

I turned it into planks first and ten some furniture. A quick check around the furniture shops shows I saved more than £500 so the thicknesser was free, right?

The advice about skimming 0.5mm or less is good advice. Quicker, easier and less divots/snipes
in case anyone is like me and was wondering wtf a thicknesser was..

WAs that the price at the beginning of the thread? If so, that would have been good work. The current £389 is a fair chunk more than the amazon price.
looks like they have indeed updated the price. I paid 224 for the thicknesser and 139 for the oscillating combined sander.
if it was a price error and not an intro price may get cancelled. fingers crossed.
sorry for those that missed out
and I also picked up and open box planar from rutlands for 129. that's definitely turning up as it's been dispatched.
I want to do similar stuff to WCA up there. I have alot of junk wood from garage demolition which I want to slavage to use for a shed / outbuild / outdoor furniture, turning it back into usable timber is part of the justification for a bunch of new tools 🙂
(I have a tablesaw and mitre already)
Well, it wasn't a pricing error as a rather massive box has just turned up - so the thicknesser is here. Sander was ordered a day later. So if you ordered one, it looks like it is being supplied
Be VERY careful with any used timber as there are hidden nails that will wreck your blades. I was cutting a piece on the table saw with no nails showing on any side when I saw some sparks. There was the snapped end on a nail about 2 inches into the block with no obvious entry hole.
Thankfully the table saw blade just cut through, if it had left a nick in the thicknesser blade I would have had to replace it after just a week.
Yeah, worth checking any reclaimed timber with a joist finder/metal detector first.
Also check for grit that's been pushed into the surface after being walked on etc.
Just as bad.
Th triton thicknesser seems to retail at about £330. If you're paying about that you'd be far better going for the metabo DH330. More powerful, a bit wider cut and the all important cutter block lock. It retails at £370

@WCA
Not always, theres usually a bit of sideways adjustment, so if you adjust one blade a little to the left, and the other a little to the right, the nicks dont line up so you get a clean cut again.
The blades on my P/T are akin to serrated knives 😆 I must get around to replacing them, or grinding out the nicks, but its such a time consuming and annoying job.
I'm just a hobbyist so getting kit on a budget, fancy makita or metabo would be lovely but too much for how much I'm likely to use them.
go on what's a cutter block lock then?
rutlands bench planer has turned up. quite a bit smaller than I expected. tbh not all that bad as my little workshop is pretty rammed.
manual on the planer tells me I should wax the bed or it could rust. any recommendations?
(thanks for the tips, new to this element of woodworking)
go on what’s a cutter block lock then?
Locks the cutter block(the big main unit thingy) in place so it doesnt vibrate or even move when you take a pass, which means in real money the cut cant be tapered by the block vibrating off its setting in use. It's one of the things that separates the cheaper thicknessers from the decent ones. Plus locked solidly in place it gives a better surface finish.

Machine wax
You can probably find it cheaper outwith Axminster for these bigger tubs, they've been getting quite pricey of late.
For the occasional used machine, they do a more reasonable small 20g tin.
I use the record power pt260, which is a planer/thicknesser rather than just a thicknesser as it allows warped and twisted timber to be put back straight and true(something a thicknesser alone cant do) It retails at about £1k today, but if you keep your eyes open on gumtree and ebay you can usually get one for under 500(one recently went on ebay for £245. Its not industrial tool, but its good kit, and can handle about anything you care to put through it.
DT78 - I hope you will be posting some results on the "What was the last thing you made" thread soon. I would be interested in seeing what uses you put it to.
yea will do, it won't be for some time though as we are having building work done so no time nor space short term
