Watch the birds in your garden or local park for an hour. Record all the birds you see that land.
Record the highest number of species you see at any one time, don't total them up over the hour, as you may see the same bird twice.
Its great fun for the children to get involved in this too.
You can send the result online www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch.
Cripes.
I class the whole of the outdoors as my garden.. 😯
Bump - did anyone take part?
The birds decided to do a runner on my Saturday watch and I was lucky to see about 4 blackbirds, the rest of the little pesky creatures turned up a few hours later.
I have two Water Rails in my garden at the moment. Been there since Dec 23 2010.
The list so far SGMTB [South Gloucestershire Mountain Bike]... is 48

***Just been tipped off a bintern is near by, might detour tommorows ride to have a look.
I tried to take part but a sparrow hawk kept on buzzing my back garden.
Had a red kite turn up during my hours watching today
got out my long lens and spent the afternoon trying to record birds. Managed to avoid the police as well...
a robin pooped in my mate's tea whilst sat at Peaslake stores today
should I record that?
redthunder-they are beautiful.
MartynS-you naughty man!
I was lucky enough to get a pair of blackcaps in the end 🙂
DezB: £20 polarising filter = no reflection.
On a S95?
DezB - that first pic is a blackcap, not a tit. Nice pic though, and lovely birds
Ah, is it. Thanks - thought it was a coaltit.
We have Bullfinches.. Tits (Coal and Blue).. Robins.. Blackbirds.. a Thrush.. some Magpies and Woodpigeons and a seemingly never ending preponderance of Owls hooting in the woods behind once the sun starts to set..
We aslo had a whole flock of red wings turn up in cold spell before christmas
Yep, I spent an hour watching the shenanigans on my feeders.
Had 3 Robins doing circuits of the tree / feeders at one point. No physical contact or bloodshed between them though which might have livened up proceedings.
Blue Tits, Greenfinches, Chaffinches,Goldfinches, Blackbirds, Great Tits, Robins, Tree Sparrows and a Dunnock to round the hour off.
The Woodpeckers (there are 3 regular visitors) stayed away during that hour, same as last year, but I included them anyway.
oh also lost count of the Starlings must have been 30 plus at one point

On a S95?
Ah, trickier but not impossible:

Very interesting 🙂
Yes its annoying when you have a regular bird (we normally have 2 pairs of bullfinches) that decide to not put in an appearance on the special day.
Double post
DezB - that first pic is a blackcap, not a ****. Nice pic though, and lovely birds
No it's not. It's either a marsh tit or a willow tit. Most likely a marsh.
Marshtit I think
First picture is a Marsh Tit. Possible Willow Tit but I'd say a MArsh.
Never seen a marsh tit or a willow tit, but it looks remarkably like the blackcap that has started to visit us
Looking at these pages, I'm still inclined to go with blackcap, it doesn't seem to have the black under it's beak, nor does the black extend far down the back of the head

I agree: Marshtit. So I was right (apart from thinking it was a coaltit.) 🙂
Red listed as quite rare too.
Well we called the Water Rail "Max" as in Max Wall.
My first video of it....
Dont know how to embed a YouTube vid in a post 🙁
Yesterdays Black Redstart....the Movie 😉
