I got the heads up from HUKD and I’ve bagged one for an early Xmas pressie.

That's a great price but If I buy another big Technic Set, with nowhere to put it, I think they all end up out in the garage along with me!

Does anyone know if the flappy paddle gearbox in the kit is a good example of how these gearboxes work, i.e. can I use it to show the kids how it works and then show them the insides of a proper one and draw the broad principle comparisons?

(trying desperately to justifying spaffing more cash on technics...)

Oh dear, I don't need but I really really want. Possibly the only RS Porsche I'll ever own.

Apologies because i imagine this comes up regularly on Lego threads like bacon on vegie/vegan ones but...

I thought ohh that'd be a nice nostalgic present to me, followed the link (other thread).

I'm dissapointed, when did (technic especially) Lego go all moulded panels and specific components and things? I remember a few things like canopies for "space" when i was a lad but certainly nothing in my technic kits, even the pneumatic hoses were generic and benefited from cutting to length.

It didn't. The panels of which you speak account for a tiny percentage of the overall parts. I expect you could build it and just leave them out if you wish. The gears etc and other technic parts underneath are largely the same ones they've always been.

certainly nothing in my technic kits
Bucket for excavator? Propeller for seaplane? Tyres?

Lego to me ( years ago!) was that yes you could build what was on the box but you could ALSO build all sorts of other stuff with it when combined with bits of other lego you had lying around form other kits etc.

I dont get this new fangled super specific stuff.

The key components are all still there, beams, pins, axles and gears,  there has always been specific parts in Lego sets. The new parts allows for much more complicated models to be made and panels just gives a richer pallette when designing the finished model.

I re-introduced myself to technic sets (which I loved growing up) last year (I was buying Lego for my daughter and I couldn't help myself!)  I'm delighted with how complicated and intricate the set have become and how the finished models often now actually look like the real thing.

The scale is well off (gearbox takes up most of the rear of the floor...) but yeah gives you a general idea

as for the moulded panels, I don’t mind them. The guts of the models are the traditional stuff, the panels make it look like what it’s is meant to be, rather than just ‘rear engined car’ or ‘truck’

Bucket for excavator?

The one i had you built that too.

Truck

Wheels and tyres I'd accept were "specific" but there was no reason you couldn't build them onto other stuff.

It's the body panels just don't work for me.

like what it’s is meant to be, rather than just ‘rear engined car’ or ‘truck’

I guess that's the thing, it seems more like making it a model of this particular car as opposed to a lego car and models (airfix etc) never really appealed to me. Each top their own really.

I'd be interested to see a photo of one of the newer kits complete, sans panels of anyone gets chance.

Anyone successfully order one? My order failed twice despite showing as in stock, but they've now charged me twice! Still showing as in stock this morning at local(ish) store 10 miles away but guess it's a stock level error.

tried a few times to order, no joy either - stock shows in the Sainsbury's stores - on the basis the stores are showing as not open yet, my guess the link is down between the two. Keep checking...

I bought one direct from Lego soon after it came out as at the time it was alleged to have been a short-term, limited edition set and I thought its value would appreciate.  And I paid £250.

Anyhoo... two years later its still available... and available at almost half what I paid.

I'm just leaving it in the original packaging, still sealed and will wait... and wait... and wait...

🙁

by Lego, or by some random website? Can’t say I have any sympathy though tbh. Bloody scalpers 😂 You might as well just open it & play with it I reckon.

My dad has the Porsche (and a lot of other large Technic kits, including the Bagger 288 and the Unimog). The Porsche is much more if a replica of its subject than the regular Technic kits are. It's got all the moving parts you'd expect but they're all buried once the thing is complete. No easily visible pistons or gearing on it.

For the specific parts, a few years back lego got a new big cheese because they were losing money, and one of the first things they did was get the designers to really cut back on the kit-specific parts, after their use had increased lots (6000->12000 parts, then back again). The reason being that it made manufacturing lots more expensive (lots more moulds to design and make) but with little in return. Changes like that probably take time to filter through, so there's probably lots of fairly recent Lego with loads of specific (cheating) parts, but not as many in the newer designs.

(Edit: misread the date. 2004, not 2014. Slightly longer than 'a few' years ago then.)

Am I missing something Lego that costs this much for adults should be criminalised

It's not really for adults though, is it?

And buying it isn't mandatory.

I said this on the other thread, but taking into account inflation Lego sets price-per-brick is about the same now as it always was.  The only difference is that we're now seeing 2000+ brick sets.  Bigger sets = higher prices.

So why so many on here glorifying it like it was made out of gold.

From what I understand, you lot are consuming plastic like there is no tomorrow.

Now put that in your lego pipe and smoke it. 😝
