Looking forward to this... To be fair, if nobody breaks a record it'll be amazing- "Fastest blue 1997 GSXR being ridden by a man called Dave"

The first one was awesome. How nice was that bike that the bloke had machined in his shed!! I posses none of the skills that these guys do, but I really hope that they don't die with their generation.

I too have to be up at 5am, but after ratching through my music collection and finding some paul van dyk stuff, I'll not be sleeping any time soon.

Excellent programme that bonny was beautiful. My 120 v would do 90 quite easily before it vibrated its fuses to bits.
Does the altitude have that much of an effect on performance?

Yep, air is thinner so engine has to work harder but will nearly always lose performance unless has been tuned to run at the same altitude, air temp makes a difference too, by some considerable margin

Anyone managed to dig up a bit more information on-line. Especially the Supercharged bike that may have taken a record if not for mechanical failure?

I just did a google images search for Bonneville Salt Flats - some of the sexiest images I've ever seen.

Even relatively small differences in altitude make quite a difference.
I recall trying to set up the mixture for a lap of the Isle of Man on a 350 Yamaha, trying to get a compromise was impossible with the equipment we had to hand. In the end we had to run it with 2 head gaskets in order to lower the compression and stop it burning big holes in the pistons.

if the altitude has such an effect on performance, lack of oxygen etc. why do they race there? Surely in 'normal' conditions everyone would be faster. Is that the only place in the world with enough flat ground?

largely for historical reasons combined with

The straights can be as long as they need em. Seen other documentaries about bonneville, the surface is far rougher than you'd think so its hardly ideal.

Fair play to the banker stopping the Flower from tipping when it was being pushed, I was ambivalent to him until that point but when he just nonchalantly said "well, I just steered into it" he won me over!

Not into customs, choppers etc but I thought the Indian was gorgeous.
