Placed a WTD ad for a Nikon DSLR, got an email with good deal on a D80 from someone called Dan Hallty. danhallty@gmail.com

Before parting with 'Paypal gift only' cash I asked for his STW name: dannh73

The photos and description he sent me in the email were identical to This completed eBay listing

Strangely, he doesn't reply to my emails after I pointed this out.

Beware..

When you asked for his username, did you not check his history !!!

All his posts are replies to Wanted ads, and only registered yesterday

Not being funny here, but WTF were you thinking 😐

I feel cheated that a scammer didn't want my money :O(

Good detecting mate.

I know people have been saying this for ages, but it really does seem like there's more dodginess than usual on the classifieds lately.

Apologies sir, I misread your post.

When you said ..

Before parting with 'Paypal gift only' cash I asked for his STW name: dannh73

I presumed you meant that, after you had done that, you sent the PayPal gift.

I'm glad you didn't 🙂

How's about whenever we buy/sell something we just leave a little message on the ad we replied to about the buyer/seller, just an informal feedback system for the regulars? People checking forum history would find it. I do it when I remember to.

Erm - probably the wrong place to say it, but I'm selling a D300 with 40,000 odd shutter actuations. Lovely and clean, inside and out, one careful owner. Email in profile...

Ok, not to rub it in, but genuinely curious why, as a user of STW for the last 4yrs, you wouldn't just do a basic check on the guys history?

Normally do but for a fiver I was a bit complacent. Just mailed him to ask if he had posted yet, pretty quick reply saying tomorrow...

Obviously got wind that he's been rumbled

He mailed me as well, offered me a mint Reverb with bleed kit etc for £70. Asked his username, was told Danny and that he lives in the Isle of Wight (convenient I suppose). Did a bit of research, couldn't find username so took the old adage - If it is too good to be true, it ain't true!!

Lol, he emailed me ref. my rear mech WTD ad. for what would be a very good deal... Thankfully I don't go with anyone who doesn't also tell me their STW user name or actually post on the thread.

Good call, and always a good reminder just to take basic steps whenever dealing with anyone you don't know.

Thankfully this place is full of history and evidence of a user.

email paypal a link to this thread - perhaps it'll give some leverage to anyone who's used paypal gift and also encourage them to poke their nose in to all his transactions

EDIT

Well i just got a full refund from him along with a message saying he wasnt a scammer and that the moderators closed his account after being wrongly accused.

that appeared while I was typing too slow

A*se! He has my address now...

He replied to my wanted thread for a seat post offering me a thomson masterpiece by direct email. He sent pics etc and asked for my address to get it packed and ready which I sent. I asked him to send his stw username before I would pay.

As soon as I saw his profile history I replied to tell him I was no longer interested but he claims he has already posted the item. I assume it will now be "lost in the post" and he will chase me to pay which I have no intention of doing...

A lesson learned for the future. Maybe we should follow the avforums approach and fully conduct all deals on the forum rather than by email and then leave public feedback as has been suggested?

I paid him £25-00 by paypal gift yesterday for a headset press that when i've just checked was an image of google images. Was using my phone to do the transaction whilst distracted by family. Bummer i will be more careful in the future. Has anyone got any contact details for him or suggestions on how to get a refund from paypal?

Thanks Diz

If the police investigate, hopefully they'll wait until Christmas Day morning to pull him in.

I know if I was a policeman working Christmas Day, I'd want to ruin the day for as many of the local scallies as possible. Good day to find them as they'd almost certainly be at home.

If we continue to see this happen at the Singletrackworld forum, we may have to disable the ability to receive free personal payments for associated accounts, meaning you'll pay fees for all money received through PayPal.

Classy.

Unfortunately, this is against our rules. Please don't ask or allow your customers to use personal/gift payments to pay for their purchases.

Its also against your rules to not accept payments on paypal on ebay

Well done you for [s]protecting consumers[/s] making sure you get some of our money for using your service

We value your business and appreciate your cooperation

Then provide what the customers want rather than what you can make the most money from

Fair enough..
It was either a threat or no more PayPal usage.
It can only be better for us all if payments are made via PayPal goods.
It's no effort to allow for fees in the sale.

It was either a threat or no more PayPal usage.

Something that could have been achieved with a touch more decorum, say, if Paypal had spoke to the forum owners first.

I would rather Mark/Chipps come on here, with a sticky saying they are banning gift payments after speaking with Paypal, than Paypal themselves* posting directly on here as they have.

My £4.30s worth**

Imho!

Paypal are a service for which every person who recieves monies should pay the fee to also include sender of monies and to bd split once agreed a total price for 2nx hand items on forum classifieds dow. The middle so everone involved is content to some degree as to the 50/50 fee charge.

However that said. The cost of which is set by Paypal is that of great issue here and needs resolving worldwide l. As for ebay owning paypal that is a complete joke as they will regulate the maximum they believe they can get away with so to speak with charging.
It made sense for ebay to own paypal of course but so did it to microsoft to own widely the computing market for financial gain/reasons.

(small volume private) Sellers get no benefit from paypal fees. Buyer should pay agreed amount to seller, adding on pp fees if they want the benefits on offer.

IMO, like

"PayPal, an eBay Company"

Nuff said really.

"Hey, buy some strangers junk off our website, then pay us some money so we can pay him for you, and while you are at it why not print a postage label so we can charge you some money to post it to you too"

Ebay is dead to me nowadays.

We've noticed that the majority of forum posts are asking for customers to send personal/gift payments for purchases of items or services

That's absolute rubbish. Some people do ask that, yes, but the majority? Err no.

I certainly don't. If someone trusts me enough to pay by gift, so be it, if they choose to opt for the protection of doing it another way, fine, I don't mind.
Why? Well, I'm still avoiding the eBay fees. I shift more stuff on here than through eBay these days, simply because eBay is too expensive.
And don't kid yourself that we, as a community, can't operate without PayPal either.

Moneygram, western union, money2anywhere we could use them all and get equally screwed over as paypal do 🙂 Oh by the way Paypal you STILL have over £150 of mine and yet you are chasing me for ebay fees for the same account?

Paypal fee for a £25 stem is a quid. You factor that into the price. Never been sure where the issue was with doing this, especially when dealing with a complete stranger. You even get to pay with a credit card if it helps your cash flow.

For bigger (whole bikes, pricey frames) purchases use a bank transfer if you know and trust them, but pick it up if possible.

Never seen the attraction to paypal gift when it's not as gift. I guess it's like having a McDump - giving it to the big scummy corporation.

@ paypal, an ebay company,

have you thought about paying more than 0.0015% corporation tax? [1]

Some of our mps are really struggling with 2nd home allowances, equipping them with the latest gadgets, improving their duck moats and removing dry rot from their second homes.

approximately 4 hospitals or 7 schools could be built every year for the ammount your company avoids in corporation tax.

Nothing worse than the mods taking out a post, which the rest of the thread hangs on, and not just leaving a note. As a result the rest of the thread makes no sense.

Anyway.

The post deleted was purportedly, seemed legit, a post from Paypal saying we are all naughty people for using PP Gift. As, apparently, that's all we use here. They did offer some good advice on trading, and the protection regular Paypal offers. They then threatened to take their ball home, and signed off as the mysterious 'Naomi'.

Where she is now....nobody knows.

No probs Jamie Watson now pass me the drugs dear fellow 😉

Agree with most of this fees largely protect the buyer so I would not want to absorb them as a seller as they give me nothing extra but the risk of being scammed

If i want the protection I pay when I buy stuff.

Its ok if you want insurance but other than that Paypal is rather crap IMHO and i tend to try and avoid it tbh
