Warning, it's really poor, apparently there is only one side to Helvellyn, half the aerial sequence is over North Yorkshire, it's at least an hour too long

What @big_n_daft said , although it has been edited down for tv so hopefully it’ll be a bit snappier

Let me guess - histrionic, over the top soundtrack?

No thanks, sub-Countryfile fodder. Do yourself a favour and watch something like this instead:

Stephen Pern is just editing another film together at the moment.

If that's true it would be a great shame as the Blencathra one was a beautiful thing.

Are the negative comments above based on facts or is it an in-joke?

That's great news, Hooks was excellent.

Hooks is amazing!

@El-shal not an in joke I don't think. Read various comments that the Hellvelyn programme is crap. Where was it originally released? It's been out online for a few months hasn't it?

No it's from watching the awful thing when it came out

Some bits were interesting but it was indulgent, not one mention of Thirlmere or St John's in the Vale, Dunmail Rise etc

Yeah, I'd seen a few similar comments too. I'll record it tonight and give it a go.

Thanks

Thirlmere is very dull compared to the actual mountain and not as pretty as other Lakes. St John's is very pretty though

But the history is interesting and there are a number of current issues that are important for the future of the area

Can you share this? Is it the abandoned zipwire project? or something more important?

To be slightly fairer, it is nice around Thirlmere but to most people it's that bit of road they zoom along between Keswick and Grasmere

https://www.unitedutilities.com/cumbria/our-plans/west-cumbria/

The use of the reservoir as flood storage is a contentious issue,

https://keswickfloodactiongroup.co.uk/index.htm

The issues around St Johns Beck and renaturalising a SAC which interlink with the need for water for people, flood management and water for habitats

Local farming issues

This guy

And the zip wire, mountain bike trails, rewilding of the wider area

But Patterdale is obviously where it is at!!!

Was there a change of heart from the Blands? They're on the new series of C4's Lakes & Dales program and some of it was filmed in 2020?

Well I thought it was OK but the music was hugely intrusive. Whereas "Mountain" which followed it was superb including the music. But if you want to sum up the majesty of nature, life, the universe and everything, you have to go a long way to match Beethoven.

I enjoyed it and it is the kind of thing the bbc should be showing.
Just about every programme on telly these days that might be worth watching is dumbed down to plankton levels.

His spine of Japan film is also online. Particularly amusing is the romantic interlude with the hut custodian...

OP here.
TBH I found some of it quite dull to watch - a good chunk not actually about Helvellyn itself - just in that general area. It would be a very short programme if it was just about the mountain and Terry Abraham was showing the interaction between people and nature etc...it was a bit too long. I love Helvellyn and have been up it many times, just felt disappointed at the end that I wasn't more enamoured by the programme.

They chopped an hour out of the version I saw. Imagine an extra hour of filler

I enjoyed it, probably in part as 2020 was the first year since 1986 that I didn't visit the summit. Lots of good memories, and a few not so good.

I didn’t get to watch it all but enjoyed it quite a lot. I liked the extra bits too, nice info about the immediate area.

I enjoyed it. Not as good as the previous films but a nice 90 mins of escapism.

The music was very strange. 🤔

Just watching it now. The music is very intrusive and ill judged in places. The music on the Blencathra one was quite dramatic but didn't detract from it in the same way it does with this one.
