Even if you don't like fishing, it's a great bit of telly.

Sunday 13th, 20:10

A lovely bit of TV, something that is not all doom and gloom.

Great programme, some of the best TV made at the minute.

Although it really annoys me that 3rd series in and Bob Mortimer still can't hold a rod properly.

As a former (near) local, I'm missing the place a bit after that. Beautiful stretch of river.

That was fab.

Did anyone watch Romesh on the Hebrides after it? I thought it was great

Luvly.
By contrast I can't stand Romesh.

Romesh was good afterwards, and I'm not his biggest fan. I may check out the musical works of Peat and Diesel as a result.

Was ace and had me all misty eyed for home as I'm from near Saltburn, but living in Shetland for 11 years as of this weekend.

Happy to see the parmo got a look in, but no red cabbage and garlic mayo?!

Beautiful TV once again, perfect Sunday afternoon fair.
Romesh was good too, and you could feel the fella showing him around warmed to him as the programme went on.

Best nights viewing for a long time. Loved the look of the Parmo that Bob made!
Enjoyed Romesh too but I like anything about the Hebrides.

I enjoyed it , and it's possibly the best Xmas special that I'll watch this year, but....... why do program makers insist on trying to make a Xmas special at the wrong time of year and pretending it's December? The trees were still almost in full leaf, only just turning brown, and they even commented on catching an 'out of season' fish. Why pretend?

Talking of out of season...

I can appreciate nature in all all wonderful moods but I really wish they did a height of summer special. Where EVERY shot was glorious sunshine, fishing until there's no light left on a summer's eve or getting up super early with the sun just rising.

Anyway thats a minor quibble, wonderful program ... I felt sad for little Bob when he went back to his family home.

Did you see the other episodes from the last few series? There's idyllic fishing galore that would meet your requirements.

I love Bob and Paul but yet to watch the Christmas special . On the subject of Romesh all his travel shows have been really good. The best being the Columbia where the guide was utterly gorgeous , Also check the one in Zimbabwe . He really chooses his guides well.

Cracking bit of TV ... but FFS Bob why are you still letting go of the rod when you cast? Somebody please teach him how to do it properly!

Watching it now - not very covidy so far unlike the last series - sharing cars etc. Was it filmed last year or something.

Don't think so, that's why the final bit was quite touching as presumably Paul would have been spending the year with them (trying not to include a spoiler)

Easy enough for a slightly longer filming schedule for them to pre-isolate and test and then be close to each other. They stayed well away from their pub guest.

Enjoyed them both.

Unless you film a year in advance then any Xmas program tends to be filmed in mid summer to autumn to allow for editing and the like.

Watched the Romesh one last night, I got the feeling that both he and Sweeny warmed to each other, also I think he was somewhat taken aback by just how different the Western Isles are even when compared to the rest of Scotland.

I think to be fair though, Romesh experience of Scotland mainly consists of doing gigs in the large cities of the Central belt. I'm not quite sure what he expected

One of those zoo documentaries did a Xmas special a few years ago, and featured the birth of a lion (iirc, or something similar.) It was very obviously the middle of a very hot patch over summer, and they were unwrapping presents for the animals around the Xmas tree, wrapped up in bobble hats and gloves, sweating pints, and trying to ignore the glaring mid-summer sunshine, fully leaved trees, and visitors wearing t-shirts and shorts. This was then repeated in the middle of summer - what is the point? (The zoo's own website said that the animal was born in August.)

I once bought tickets for the Central FM Hogmonay Party.

Wasn't expecting the party date to be in mid-September.

Got a refund but was told it was "traditional" 😉

PS: Loved the Gone Fishing Christmas Special. Enjoy Romesh's travel programmes but can't help but feel there is no one more unsuited to the type of travel he does - he's almost Karl Pilkington in his approach.

The xams special debate is a bit like the sports personality not having a personality debate.

Xmas special means a one off extra put on away from the main series to fulfill the need of filling the network with popular shows when the nation is watching a bit more telly. Add some tinsel if possible but it's not a deal breaker.

Only snag - Paul and Bob's show was not on a christmas - that's the end of next week. But streaming means every day is a christmas special if you want it to be I guess.

It was filmed 6 weeks ago. The Holiday cottage in the North York Moors Bob and Paul stayed in was my Mum’s holiday let, I watched them film it.

Is it the (ex) Chequers cafe?

Yeah, it's Chequers. The tea room was turned into a holiday let.

...and we've a house in the seaside village (the background in a couple of scenes indicating to anyone with similar sporting interests, not fishing, why I have a house there), where they created a bit of a buzz when filming. I didn't see them but apparently everyone thought they were fantastic. I should probably post something about my noble self-sacrifice in not going there during these difficult times, even though I can see via our webcam I've left a light on in the ****ing living room last time I was over...

the aussie version is a bit more earthy

I'm not even convinced the last bloke on isn't a Paul Whitehouse character
