It's been a wild ride for those in it and us watching. I nearly bought in when the PSA was posted. Decided the Instinct wasn't for me and I really did want a Fenix. Found a 6s on facebay, popped round the guys house, he gave me the watch, I gave him some cash. Bit of an easier way to do a deal 🙂

Wouldn’t be totally surprised if the folks kicking off most on trust pilot and other places are in the main folks ( scalpers ) who have hoovered up loads ( or thought they had ) and have already sold them on via E bay ( or similar )
Well done to the lucky sods on here who got them, to the rest… better luck next mistake ( I’m in that group )

Sorry to hear the bad news guys.

Utterly bizarre that some orders are honoured, others not.

Nearest ive been to this situation is a mis-price on a TV years back. Curry's sent a letter to every person that had made the order, explaining the error, which is fair enough.

Garmin are a bit of an odd company on so many levels...

I’m more hacked off at being told by webchat it was all fine shortly before the cancellation than anything else.

Shocking truth: web chat very often knows the same as or less than the customer.

Right. I've enjoyed experiencing the highs & lows of this shit show for the last dozen or so days with you guys, but as far as I'm concerned, it's a wrap!

Massive thanks to @5lab

Catch you all on another thread 😀

Really weird. I ordered very late Christmas night, and noticed that some of the colours were showing at the original full price, so ordered a tactical as it was at the sale price.

I figured they'd sold all the volume they wanted at the low price. Seemed that was the case when people started receiving them.

Anyway, I don't really want it at 20% (although the actual code takes it from £249 to £185 which I make about 26%)

If anyone wants 26% off, help yourself: GRMN20-NYS-JAV-XV99

Aye, it's a crock of shit. Everyone knows it. Garmin know it too.

Whatever they were intending, they have achieved a spectacular own goal. They must have weighed up the potential reputational damage Vs the potential financial hit, and made a decision.

Easy decision IMHO. Garmin has no like for like competitors. Plenty others do bits of what they do, but no one does watches like they do - especially the Instinct.

Just had mine cancelled, on the positive side I am now £96 better off and it has saved me the hassle of sending it back to Garmin, as every other device has been! 🙂

Got the cancellation email, I'm never going to buy a garmin again. Well not until the fenix 7 or something is out...

Ah well it was too good to be true,

I was thinking similar. Some griping on the internet that'll give them a tough Q1 financially will be offset but the trickle of reviews for the new Vivo's, Fenix 7 and then the Instinct 2 later in the year. Things will pick up.

Its a shame that code only lasts until the end of the month, 20% of one of the new devices could have been slightly easier to swallow.

Code only works for the devices that had the silly discount mistake. So instinct solars and posh enduro.

I too got the email and code. Not overly fussed as I didn't really need it (like 90% of the buyers I reckon) and can accept it was a mistake on Garmins part.

Bit annoying that some got them, but meh, it's not worth crying over.

With hindsight the PSA was clearly a mistake and it would be commercial suicide to discount them so far - even if they could afford it.

We live and learn, next 🙂

Some griping on the internet that’ll give them a tough Q1 financially

Not a chance, given the amount of kit they shift all over the world, it'll have zero effect on them, because like the folk on here - they've lost nothing.

4 billion turnover, 16,000 employees.

I think they can afford a few disgruntled bargain price gougers, I’d hazard a guess most of the cancelled orders were going to get flipped onto eBay for quick profit anyway

I actually did need (I mean want) a new GPS watch.

On the flip side, I’ll actually look at the options now than just going… “ooh bargain” not sure I even looked at the Instinct beyond “**** it, that’ll do”

Same here, my old forerunner stopped charging a few months ago and this seemed just the job. The discount code gets me to 185 which is still decent but I really ought to look around to see if other models would be more suitable. I sense a bit of time scouring DC rainmaker's comparison tool

I wish they wouldn't lie about the reasoning though. It wasn't a technical error at all. It was clearly a human error, but they clearly think it more palatable to claim that the weird cloud of impenetrable IT was the cause of the issue.

Which is a bad look for a company that supposedly exists to exploit electronics to the utmost degree

And "we apologise for any inconvenience caused", rather than "we really messed that up". And the 12 day delay. And the "as a valued customer, your business is important to us" - that is absolutely not the impression I've had for the last fortnight.

^^^

you've clearly never used a garmin piece of software before then. in my experience they sum up the '**** it, that'll do' school of software releases.

I would guess the pricing wasn't a mistake, I think the stock allocation to that pricing was a mistake and they sold way too many at that price which might explain why some got theirs and others didn't.

The software was shite on my old edge 500 and 520, but tbh none of the 4 garmin watches I've had since have ever given me any issues.

I didn't order one on this PSA as I already have an Instinct Solar, but I have been watching the thread. It is a really good piece of kit and IMO a bargain if you can get 20% or more off. I think it is good value at RRP compared to the competition too. Mine was worn daily for best part of year, before that a non solar one, and I really can't fault it.

I am now using an Apple watch 7 as my daily watch and the Instinct for some rides and walks. The software on the Instinct, and my Edge 530, is seamless and fully integrates with Apple and Strava. I can log a ride, swim or other activity on either my Instinct or 530, it autoloads to Strava and backfills to my Apple fitness, so it allows use of either watch for me unless I am doing multiday stuff where I can't easily charge the Apple watch daily, or if I want to navigate using the watch, in both of which scenarios the Instinct wins.

For pool use, the Apple seems to be more accurate than the Instinct, though less data on swim strokes etc

@iainc, what's your take on instinct Vs instinct solar then? Considering you're just using it for sports rather than a daily watch, worth paying the extra? I know that there are other changes beyond just adding solar PV cells but less sure if they are worth the £50ish difference

^^^^ the Solar, as i understand, has various revisions over the non solar which remove some clunkiness. My experience with both definitely backs this up. My original one had a few situations where it froze, or stumbled and needed a reboot. Never with the Solar. One key point on them both, don't store too many activities on the device as that holds up Software auto updates, and they don't tell you that !

I'd say the Solar is worth the extra for sure over the basic one.

Solar was definitely an upgrade, there's a lot of differences over the original instinct - It looks like the new instinct due out is actually just an upgrade on the instinct, ie not solar.

don’t store too many activities on the device as that holds up Software auto updates

Interesting, I've never had issues, I'll have a look.

the instinct solar has a different gps chip which is most of the reason why it lasts longer. The solar part is nice, but not that big of a deal in comparison.

So unless you need the surf/parachute settings available with solar, or the really long tracking capability, the standard is fine

I got the dreaded email last night also, was half expecting it though so not too upset. Decided to take them up on the discount code so got an Instinct Solar ordered even though I didn't think I needed one before this PSA.

So, the pending payment which disappeared a few days back, has now just been debited again, as a pending payment...

Maybe they've had thousands of complaints and are now honouring them?

Just when you thought it was safe to forget your Garmin order... They reel you back in again!!

I paid by debit card and had the transaction refunded on 2 Jan however for some reason Garmin have taken £95.99 from my account today. Perhaps they need the money!

They realise that make a bad call and have taken a guilt trip, deciding at the last minute to honour the orders.

Probably.

Or their order cancellation process is so backwards it has to pre-authorise the payment again before they can cancel the order.

However the option to Cancel Order has now changed to Request a Return.

Ordered a new watch (fenix) from blacks thanks to the PSA above... they're now being very apologetic about delays. I wonder if they actually had stock or whether they too are relying on garmin... different watch, similar levels of er... excitement.

Mine was also showing as a new pending payment having disappeared yesterday. The link from the order had also swapped from "Cancel" to "Request a Refund". Talking to our friend Jeremy on live chat he confirmed that my order had been cancelled and that the money can't be actually debited from my account until the order is completed (which it won't ever be). So I wouldn't get your hopes up alas.

Yeah just noticed on my banking app that Garmin have taken £108 from my account earlier today…..24 hours after receiving the email to say they had cancelled the order.
I don’t mind the fact that they cancelled, mistakes happen. I did want one but knew it didn’t seem right. Bit annoyed though that they’ve gone and cocked up again re-taking the payment.

I imagine the Trusted Reviews servers are going to collapse later today….going to be some angry people about!!

Just so I'm understanding this correctly....

Some of you paid Garmin (let's say) £96 on christmas day for a solar instinct.

Yesterday, you got the email to announce they'd dropped a bollock and have cancelled your order.

Today, Garmin took another £96 out of your account?

Is that right?

I ask, cos I paid by paypal and I got the cancelled email last night, but the £96 still hasn't been refunded to my paypal account. BUT I havent been charged again.

Nearly, but change 'took £96 out of your account' to 'pre-authorised £96 from your account'

No money actually ever left my account, only a pending payment on the 25th for a week, and again today for a couple of hours.

My PayPal hasn't been refunded. I did wonder that if enough people opened a dispute in line with PayPal terms how much of a problem it would cause

Ok so here's what Jack says;

All unfulfilled orders will be credited due to the "technical error". No one is getting an Instinct at £96/£108. Those that have were becuase some were sent out before Garmin realised the error had occurred.

Lucky for them, unlucky for the rest of us.

So anyway, I then referred him to the Consumer Act, and mentioned that Garmin have a legal obligation to sell me the watch at the advertised price. At this point, he promptly cut me off with a "this conversation has ended" message!
