A mate got the Amazon download and made me watch it. Not a climber but by golly it was epic. The bit where he was sessioning Boulder Problem (?) had me on the edge of my seat.

Anyone know how to get the Nat Geo on Amazon Prime / Firestick , or can you watch it live on their web site?

Spoiler. In Dawn Wall no one shops for a new fridge

But do you see some worrying signs in a relationship? That got quite weird in Solo.

Quite complicated I thought.
She's fallen in love with someone who does something that scares her shitless, and she's trying to find a way of coming to terms with the fact that he's not going to stop doing this thing, but still (in his own weird way) loves her.

Alex H comes across as definitely being ASD or similar. He's trying to learn how to be affectionate, but it's obviously quite alien to him.

The MRI scan was interesting, I'd like to have seen more about that and why/how it affects his decision making and ability to do things that would scare most of us motionless!

The boulder problem. Jesus 😬

At first (original thread) I wasn’t that interested, mainly because I’d not seen any trailer for it..

Now I have..

And i’ll be slugging back a bottle of wine whilst it’s on.

It appears to have won the Oscar for best documentary.

"This is more our fridge, it's adequate." 😆

I've watched Meru, Dawn Wall, and Free Solo on consecutive evenings. They make a great informal trilogy.

The Free Solo relationship thing is interesting but probably over played. Clearly even by Alex's standard the solo of "Free rider" was a big deal. He was a bit indifferent she was worried. But of course there will have been loads of footage of them shopping for other domestic appliance where there was no real tension between them.

Again Dawn Wall is more comfortable. The girl friend/ wife comes along for 10 years of climbing pushing back the boundaries of big wall climbing rather worrying

I think sanni liked the Oscars though

Right, I've seen Dawn Wall, Valley Uprising and Free Solo. Please can someone advise me of any similar films to watch? I found this totally gripping despite it being so far outside what I would consider even trying.

Was pretty gash I thought, his girlfriend was really annoying and I just fast forwarded quite a bit of it. I don't know how they managed to make such a mind-blowing feat seem so boring.

I enjoyed it and am not into climbing, I think it worked quite well showing the relationship side of things although it was all a bit one-sided and I'm sure he's not like that 24/7. As for the final climb sequence, I actually felt pretty queasy during some of it despite knowing he's successful, can understand why the cameraman on the ground couldn't watch. As for what he achieved, it's just mental the amount of skill, strength and will that must be required.

I watched it last night at the cinema. On the big screen, the cinematography is amazing.

It's a film about what drives this guy to do such extreme solo routes. It's not about his ability to appeal with a silky voice and a twinkle in his eye.

As a climber, that was a highly uncomfortable watch, both the climbing and the way he navigates his relationship.

Even though you know the outcome, watching him go into the very sketchy sequences on the Freeblast slab and the boulder problem was harrowing stuff.

And him considering whether to do that move as a double dyno...

I watched it and was awestruck. I got that it was a documentary more about Alex and his approach and mindset...he's clearly a guy who's very focussed, maybe somewhere up there on the Autistic scale and struggles with 'normal' relationships...which is probably why he's able to do what he does. His Girlfriend I thought, was pushing a lot of 'negativity' onto him...could be the way they edited it...but she's not come out in public to say it gave a false impression. I would have thought that getting involved with someone like Alex it is obvious that the climbing would always take priority and pushing him to ultimately give up...which is what she was effectively doing, could potentially mess too much with his mind and increase the risk of him making an error. Interesting that he abandoned his first attempt, and I wondered if it was because of her....and that for his second attempt she left him alone and went to stay elsewhere away from him to leave him to completely focus on the task at hand. I wonder if anyone had a quiet word with her?

But that bit with the 'karate' kick where he was transfering thumb holds from one hand to the other really got my ring piece doing the 5p, 10p thing. Unbelievable. I can't even begin to imagine how someone can get their head in a situation where you'd think: "You know, I can do this...lets have it". Definitely a different breed.
