There's a half decent Cold War thriller in there buried somewhere under the 80s US jingoism and 'Star Wars in the arctic' third act.
It's poor and awesome in equal measure. Objectively it's not a great film (OK though and very much of its time), but the 12 year old in me is filled with joy and excitement every time I watch it.
The sequel novel was great too.
Agree, remember thinking it would have made a good film, lot of tension.
