the buyer requests a return becuase “it’s defective”.
WTF? It’s clearly listed as “no returns”
That's shocking. Not since someone tried to send me a coat back because it was "too big", have I seen such nonsense from Ebay. I always use a computer to place listings, as some options, such as the "no returns" are hidden when you use the app. I always put "No return - I'm not a business or shop" in the listing too.
Glad you didn't have to shell out. Buyer got themselves a free cap due to ebay's crapness!
@nbt, "no returns" isn't so simple, it doesn't overrule some of the basic protections. It more or less removes the no fault/buyer's remorse/doesn't fit returns options, but it leaves all the "not described, is damaged or is faulty outwith the description" stuff. It also doesn't override the "condition" tab which surprises people a lot I think, the actual conditions are extremely restrictive so it's easy asa seller to slip outside of them when an item seems good to you. SO yeah if it actually had a defect that you didn't mention, or a difference in the listing, "no returns" has no effect, basically to stop dishonest sellers from abusing it. "Yeah I said it's mint and it isn't but I also said no returns"
So in your case they've looked at it, realised they can't do a return for the reason they want to, and so they've chosen "defective" to try and get round that. Ebay's looked at it and seen this and have intervened. It's more or less the system working how it should, except for them refunding the buyer- even when it's out of their pocket not yours that's still encouraging their shitty behaviour so they'll probably do it again, but at least they've protected you.
Yeah fair play, but they only intervend becuase I chased it up. By default there's no option to say "this buyer is being a dick", just "accept return" or "negotiate a discount" (or words to that effect). As you say, it's worked, and this is probably the best outcome for me, but does mean someone got away with being a dick
I sold a rear shock on eBay and had no returns in the listing, buyer said it doesn't fit his bike. Sorry that's your fault, it was clearly listed in the description. Next they file a claim as not as described i ended up loseing the money and the shock!!!!!
The only condition I'm concerned with is - no returns - unless not as described. Any other reason they can swivel
My theory is that if the buyer funded the purchase with a credit card, Ebay don't want to get a section 75 chargeback & get a bad rep with the CC companies so force you to accept a return or lose money.
If someone asks to return an item I've sold, I follow the returns procedure to the letter - at least that way you get the item back & only lose the postage.
Then add that buyer to your block list.
Fees added to asking prices makes for silly looking listings, just pulled my last 3 sales & will either keep or sell them elsewhere.
Yeah, I revised mine to make the final price a round number. Messy though. The new slow payment thing is annoying. All in all a poor experience compared to how it was only last week.
I’ve had two sales recently that eBay shows as not having been delivered, so they won’t release the funds, but when you actually click on the tracking link. The goods HAVE been delivered. It’s been almost a week since they were delivered.
Think you have to wait 2 weeks for payment if not showing as delivered but actually is.
I sent a rare motorbike part via their global shipping program (first time I've used it) delivered to their depot no problem but now have to wait for it to be shipped to Italy before money shows in my account.
I've made no sales since the latest change, possibly co-incidence but let's see if it continues.
They're at risk of driving trade to the STW classifieds if they keep ****ing things about at this rate.
I listed a heap of stuff last night and made 5 sales from them already. Not looking forward to the postage/confirmed delivery/release of payment thing. I always send stuff RM tracked 48 but bought via RM, not within eBay, so that might slow things down I guess.

I sold something last week and was as straightforward as ever. Printed off postage label (although could have just used QR at PO), stuck on box, gave to PO and received funds as soon as item had entered PO system, i.e. didn't have to wait for item to actually be delivered

System changed on 4th Feb, so you may have sold before the cut off - or perhaps by using eBay's postage system they only need to know it's in the system?
Thats a bit strange - I have 3 listings, all of which were listed before the changes came into effect. One has been altered to reflect the new price increase and two remain as I priced them.
The only difference I can see is that the two that remain the same are both listed as new items whilst the one thats been changed is used.......is that a thing?
I have a few listings live at the moment and found the buyer fees have come in as a staged process, electrical items first, then over the course of a few days the extra fees spread across all of my listings...
The fees are only being added to listings (or autorenewals) made after the change date. Processing of funds applies to all sales regardless of their sale date.
Interesting. I had an item listed at the start of December sell on Monday night, and no fees showing on the listing or invoice. Does the buyer get charged the fees? I’d be a bit miffed if I clicked “buy it now” on a price and then find a few quid added on when sorting payment.

Sold after 4th Feb and yes it appears that as soon as item in the system (picked up from PO in my case) the money gets sent.
"The fees are only being added to listings (or autorenewals) made after the change date. Processing of funds applies to all sales regardless of their sale date."
Not true.
As I said in my post above, one of my three live listings has been changed to reflect the buyers fees. This was listed before the 4th Feb and has not auto-renewed yet. The other two (one listed on the same date as the one changed, one a little before) have not been altered. The one altered is a used vinyl LP, the other two are brand new lego sets.
Sold two things since the change has come into effect - EBay are now sitting on my money with the items in transit
Both are tracked and should arrive tomorrow - not sure how long it will take to release the cash
All my listings still not showing the buyer protection fee - these changes are truly awful - prices already looking very odd on the site and it puts me as a buyer off buying as you can see how much they are screwing out of you
Having to wait for the money is just as bad - it's like Mastercard sitting on the money for retailers until goods are delivered - dreadful
I'd rather they brought back seller fees TBH
From what I could make out, if logged in you see your sales as what you put them up for but only actually see the selling price when not logged into your account? Hence something I'd put up the the price of £150 appeared as £156.72 to buyers, which is just daft in my opinion & yes would prefer to pay fees as a seller myself.
If you go into the selling tab on eBay and click on the listing, you’ll get the actual sale price it’s listed at.
So far I am not a fan of the waiting for delivery confirmation to be paid thing. I sold something a week ago and according to the tracking info, they have tried to deliver twice but nobody has been home. I assume at some point they will leave it at the depot for him to collect. If this happens and he doesnt collect for a few days, it will be over 10 days before I get paid even though I dispatched the item on the day of the sale.
Having to wait for the money is just as bad - it's like Mastercard sitting on the money for retailers until goods are delivered - dreadful
That would be better as would get a better response from retailer for any missing items, duff delivery company they choose to use etc,.
If you add tracking details it appears you get the funds available two days after the delivery is confirmed. Similar to Vinted without the buyer needing to confirm all is well I guess. I wonder if the funds being help by eBay makes them more money in interest than they got from selling fees????
My wife sells quite a lot on EBay and we noticed the new prices rolling out over a few days.
Her sales seem to have ground to a halt presumably because people are finding it confusing. We tried doing some offers and counter bids between us and the lack of transparency between what each party sees price wise does not help. I.e. a buyer offers 20 and thinks that is a fair price but the seller sees £18.50 and thinks I'm not selling for that. People will get used to it I suppose.
What is quite bizarre is a few items that I am watching are changing prices by small amounts from one day to the next.
Also I submitted a bid a few days ago for a camera, it had a high starting price so I am still the top bidder at that starting price but the bid value now shows as £1.12 higher than when I made it. There have been no further bids on the camera. It is a mess.
It really is rubbish, as a buyer all prices are weird, as a private seller trying to decide a price it's a mess.
It is a mess. All my multi buy discounts have gone and with free postage (ie I include in the sale price) it's really messed up anyone buying more than one of something. I'm going to need to sit down and work out a whole new pricing structure. Not the end of the world but a pain.
To be fair I never fully grasped how much would end up in my pocket with the old seller fees and it's only a hobby business for pocket money.
The stupid buyer protection fee should only be added at checkout in the same way that when you look at overseas items it gives you an indication of the final price paid at checkout, but the negotiated price is still the same for both parties - as it is right now, it’s a bloody mess, especially on offers.
Additionally - why, as a seller with 100% feedback and tens of thousands of £££ worth of sales over the last 3 years, only a single return in that period (muppet) am I being treated the same as seller with far more risk? Surely there should be some ranking above which the buyer protection fee is either reduced or waived? And, at this level, your funds could be released on dispatch of the item? This would give sellers an incentive to behave and place the onus of financial responsibility on those with the highest risk.
I'm struggling to care.
Its all seems to be working just fine for me.
Different but fine.
It's awful now as a seller. Buyers can cancel and retract bids without consequence, and request to cancel auctions after they've won for truly spurious reasons (the last one that eBay sided with was "found a better price elsewhere").
eBay doesn't act on reports, doesn't let sellers leave feedback, makes it insanely difficult to block bidders, and despite the changes will charge a final value fee if you choose not to relist your item straight away after a buyer cancels.
There's a reason they're panicking and while they were an evil company to begin with, they're doing a stunning job of blending that with incompetence. And I thought Facebook Marketplace was bad.
Yep, all working fine for me too. But change is bad….
I had someone ask if they can make an offer on some pedals I was selling. Trouble is, when they offer, it includes the buyer protection fee. So, I wanted £25 net (ish) and be offered £25 as his cost. I got £23.48 or thereabouts.
So the price you ask for on a BIN has the BPF added on, but the price they offer doesn't.
All a bit rubbish.
And I thought Facebook Marketplace was bad.
I might have to resort to using it, the way eBay is going.

Because it's actually just a stealth fee to claw back the money they used to take in seller fees.
Like others above, I'd also prefer to just go back to them.
I'm considering changing my account to a business account and just paying the fees. Though sure there will be some downside to that I've not realised.
I sold something, no money in account for nearly 3 weeks , small item buyer didn't leave feedback so they think no proof of delivery.
Now, the seller fees have now been replaced by buyer fees, so what you want for it isn't what buyers actually see.
So dearer for the buyer, and as the seller you may have to lower your price for it to look like a reasonable price.
I just got a car linkage i ordered thursday, it was sent 48hrs tracked and i got it today (wednesday) but it was slightly too large to work so i had to reuse the old one, and want to return whats left of it. Do I have to do the return within 48hours now? Last time I had to return som, ething i was told that since ebay had paid the money out already, so there was nothing they could do.
Also a phone I bought as New on 8april last year, the cable keeps falling out, so Im trying to return it under warranty. But the seller (big company) didnt answer my messages, and I called ebay, who said they dont have copies of the original for sale listing, there was nothing they could do, and I need to call Paypal for them to sort out
The sale is there on my Purchases page, but there is no trace on ebay of when/how the money was actually paid
Cable falling out is sometimes just fluff in the socket. Worth going at it with a pin just in case. Saves a lot of eBay hassle if it is that.
no, its a POS google pixel 6A,and it wont charge wirelessly either
also, be careful on ebay if you have to return something, the reason you choose. If you chose Does Not Fit the seller can refuse as you bought it anyway, whereas if you chose Description does not match item, then they sent the wrong thing and ebay should be able to get your money back for you.
Cable falling out is sometimes just fluff in the socket. Worth going at it with a pin just in case.
+1
My preferred technique is to cut a thin wedge shaped piece off a plastic tray of paracetamol, turn the phone off and use the pointy end to pick around the charging pins in the port.
Give that a try @alric
Beware when using any promoted listings - the % rate is plus VAT, so if your ad rate is 10% you're actually paying 12%. It's also applied to the whole order, so if postage is a significant part of it (like posting a bike), you could be paying up to 15%. On a £1000 order with £100 postage, this really smarts.
On the plus side I bought a camera on bids for a lot less than I was expecting.
My wife's selling is still really slow however so plusses and minuses
Yep, my stuff has literally stopped moving. I tend to rotate watersports gear, guitar pedals and audio stuff. Buy it use it for a bit then get rid to fund the next purchase. Normally as I get the stuff at a good price, I use buy in now and price stuff just a bit cheaper than the average so it moves quickly, normally in a day or two - maybe a week at worst. But since the beginning of this month I've not sold a thing.
Is there a way to have delivery confirmed? I sold an item, so posted off and entered tracking info. to eBay; I can see that delivery was made (with photograph of such) on schedule. I even asked the buyer to confirm, and he said that he would (he has left feedback). Doesn’t seem to be an option for the seller to complete, so I guess I’m stuck with payment in pending until ebay deems it completed. Think that this is the last time I bother with selling there.
@drlex From what I understand, the money should be in your balance 2 days after it is marked as delivered in the ebay tracking. It is only collections where the buyer needs to manually confirm.
That's assuming whatever postage method you used is updating the tracking in ebay?
Thanks for the reply. No, didn’t get marked as delivered, although the tracking number and courier selection do link through to a completed delivery. Looks like I’ll just have to fire off a query to CS, and then no doubt have to chase payment to my bank account. It wasn’t a lot of money, and thankfully it’s not a business or sideline for me.
Had this with a seller recently, parcel delivered to my safe place meant tracking threw an error. Seller used live chat and had it resolved promptly and funds released quickly
Oh, for ****s ****ing sake.
Sold a pair of hens teeth 24" stans crest wheels on eBay. Bought by a guy in the states. Checked the GSP size requirements, put them in a box with axles to convert qr to boot thru, tyres and everything. It's been deemed undeliverable by eBay and hasn't left the UK.
Ok, I get my money. But it looks like the wheels will just be lobbed/resold. Bloody great wheels they were - ideal for a young ripper.
(Apparently this was a problem before eBay changed its systems but I'm still gonna whinge about it anyway. Bloody Trump tosser).
Is the title of this thread still correct? I thought I'd heard they were changing things after initially making it free?
Having not sold on eBay for years, I've a bunch of items I'm wanting to list this month (Santa Cruz Chameleon, Reverb dropper, some barely used cycling jackets) and want to be sure they're not going to fleece me

Technically yes - it's free for private sellers. BUT, eBay now add a "Buyer Protection" fee into the mix which is paid by the buyer, meaning the seller pays no fee. Example: list a bike for sale with a BIN price of £1500 - but the actual listing seen by potential buyers will see a different price (with the buyers protection fee added in). Listed price might be something like £1560 inc that fee. So although no fee for the seller to pay, eBay are still taking their cut via another way.
Possibly not the clearest explanation of it but perhaps explains why there's some weird listed item prices now.
In about a week's time they are also going to tie you into their delivery options, unless it's a collection only item. You also don't get paid until delivery is confirmed. Oh yes & cash on collection is no longer possible/allowed.

I had this last week. I couldn't change the options.

To be fair to eBay, the integrated postage thing's been flawless since I started using it - with one exception I'll mention below. Previously I used to buy my own postage via Royal Mail's website but since RM's one of the integrated options, it's easier - and slightly cheaper - to buy it direct through eBay. Less effort on the seller's behalf too. I always send stuff Tracked 48 so funds are with me as soon as tracking info shows its been delivered.
The one issue I had was using Paisley Freight to send a bike a few weeks ago. Booked the postage direct with Paisley Freight but when I added the tracking info into eBay it didn't like the format: eBay can't cope with there being a dash in the tracking reference. Meant the funds weren't automatically released after delivery, but one quick phone call with eBay - with an actual human being! - sorted it instantly.
I have used their built in postage a few times and it works pretty well, I don't use it on bigger items as I am able to send stuff through work and it's cheaper for me, better service for the buyer always delivered with in 24/48hours.
I continue to use eBay as my main way of selling bike parts as i seem to sell stuff quicker than through any other site
Yes, still working well for me but then I don't struggle with change. Sold a few items with Simple Delivery and it was indeed simple. Sold a collection item at weekend and money was available in eBay within minutes of scanning buyers collection code and in my bank account within 30 minutes.
Their postage works well enough and seems to update quickly, the only issue I had was when an item went missing. Evri wouldnt talk to me as I wasn't their customer, ebay said it wasn't them as the status was "in transit" so not lost and I needed to speak to Evri etc. It went around and around for weeks and I had to refund the buyer in the meantime as they hadn't had what they paid for.
Probably because I'm an outlier living nr to a post office I was quite happy using & supporting the local PO along with running a risk by using untracked services for low cost items, but that is no longer an option with eBay delivery.
Simple Postage has some issues, it's mandatory except when it's not suitable but their idea of what is and isn't suitable seems pretty much random, at a guess it's some low grade ai thing that just isn't clever enough to actually do the job.
it's also pretty annoying to have to weigh and size up everything before you list it... I've got a load of, frankly, crap listed at the moment and it's worth the time to take a photo and throw up a listing on the offchance but every bit of extra hassle makes it less worthwhile.
I'm personally happy with evri but I know a lot of people aren't. I did get one item flipped to royal mail for no reason I can comprehend- I'd listed it with "other courier" before Simple Postage came in and I guess it got migrated on a relisting or something. Just had to tell the person nope, sale cancelled, it didn't make any sense to post by RM and I couldn't get to a post office in a reasonable time.
It's not that I massively hate the new system, though for me it's mildly worse and mildly annoying. It's just that it comes on top of enshittification after enshittification. The "no fees" straight into "buyer protection fee for customers" fiasco, and the delayed payments, and the Saved Feed being trashed, and now this. But sadly it has to get a lot worse before anything else becomes viable really.
I have been caught out with the postage now.
Quite clearly wasn't sufficient it feels like ebay switched it, but i moght have just mucked up.
Anyway, my usual approach was just to send at higher cost and absorb the difference. This time though i had to pay, add a tracking number and let the buyer paid delivery to timeout and they got a refund. So they got to avoid postage and i was the cost of the poatage down off the sale.
Kept the buyer informed, explained what was happening and that not to worry if aomething gets cancelled as i wanted to make sure we were both protected.
Not a big deal, mildly annoying and mainly a lesson to do as northwind says and pre weight and cost the postage.
Still way better than selling on gumtree and facebook.
I seem to have lost combined postage, anyone know if this still available. I've got some small items for sale that I charge 85p for royal mail second class postage. Previously it's been set for 85p total no matter how many someone buys (I can get a few in one envelope) but now eBay adds 85p per item which is not great for buyers. Can this been adjusted? Can't see a setting anywhere.
Has anyone had some increasingly stern warnings about "Bladed Item Listings"?
eBay has sent me several emails saying I need to update my listings to verify bladed items are only sold / delivered to over 18s. I've double checked I've not got anything like that listed - all I've currently got for sale are some army boots.
I'm not sure if it's a generic email that's been written badly and should talk about general, hypothetical bladed items rather than saying I have some listed, whether some auto-categorisation has decided that I could shiv someone with a boot or what...
First listing since they added the buyer's fee... I put BiN price £38 and on the listing it shows as £40.24
I swear I saw at one point the post was included in the price, which was not what I set - but on the selling page it does show +Postage. Odd.
How does insurance work with the new postage system?
Last time I sent an expensive thing a couple of weeks ago, it wouldn't give me the option to add it - and I ended up taking the chance.
Have had that this week. Just sold a frame for £1100. The buyer selected Parcel Force 48, but it didn't include adequate insurance/cover. In the end I opted to purchase my own PF48 service
with the correct insurance and absorb the extra over and above what the buyer paid.

Glad it wasn't me being dense.
They really have ****ed things up good and proper, haven't they?
Parcelforce doesn't integrate well with eBay. What I've been doing is pricing it offline and manually adding the the rate to eBay, then just marking as despatched and putting the tracking in (and parcelforce's tracking number can be hard to figure out).
I've had two go through GSP and neither of them worked well despite the tracking being marked as delivered. And then one package was disposed of by eBay 😔
Lord knows what'll happen when you can't manually do the postage.
I had that knife thing. I had listed some Warhammer figures, a few of which had swords and daggers and assumed I'd triggered something (I remember someone having difficulty listing a Cannondale Scalpel for the same reason a while back) but not so sure now. I ignored it and it went away.
New postage thing is a right pain in the bottom though
Effectively makes it pointless clearing out small low value stuff like the umpteen brake adapters or Garmin mounts, most books and CDs. Books and CDs can go to the charity shop, but they won't want a dozen brake mounts
It's still letting me use royal mail. £1.55 for a large letter. You can get quite a good sized cheap item into that. No tracking but I'll live with that for a low value item.
I've also suffered from the 'bladed' items ban. I was selling an old B&D Jigsaw without an actual blade. It was a repeat listing except it has now been taken down by eBay ...

I don't think the obligation to use eBay's postage system kicks in until 15th April 🤔
When you sell to someone in Northern Ireland, they pay UK rates for (eg Evri). I just got £2.94 for P&P, but Evri's cost is £5+
I can switch to Royal Mail, but still a bit light on postage (£3.35).
All a bit shite.
If that's using Simple Delivery and so long as you buy the postage label via eBay - it shouldn't make any difference to you or the buyer. You should both be charged the flat amount and eBay swallow the rest.
It's awful now as a seller.
Their world has changed. They're moving from being an online auction site to a marketplace that operates more in the space of Amazon and Ali Express.
I imagine private sellers are a nightmare for eBay in general but less so in this model. Historically, the seller got their money quickly and was then left to their own moral compass to push on with packing, posting, etc ... before it got to the item actually being properly packed, arriving as described, etc. eBay have made the seller be more of a retailer than someone clearing a bunch of second hand stuff that might be of interest to raise a bit of cash.
Odd buying prices to one side, it's a far better experience for the buyer which is key if you're changing your model from auction site to market place.
I don't think it's awful as a seller. It's just different. You have to wait for your money and the slower you are with posting, the longer you wait, but using Simple Delivery (Which is actually awkward if you don't want to use GSP for international) everything is handled within the system and it's all fully tracked and insured and cheap - you don't even need a printer.

Really? Blimey. I hadn't considered that. I have a few bits and bobs listed at present so perhaps I will look at those and monitor what charges I have.
The only time it may come back to you is if you've misjudged the size or weight of the parcel - I've you've sold it as a small parcel, but it's actually a medium by size or weight for example, but this would only happen if RM/Evri picked up on the difference and asked eBay for the money.
I see eBay are noting the cost of the "buyers fee" now, so it's out in the open. Some numpties are still stating "cash on collection" though....
Anyone sent a bike since the new postage system came into force? None of the options I can see are big enough for a full-size bike box...
