TCM Movies (Sky 315) and free at 11:10 tonight.

Awesome film marathon worth a watch on a late night shift or to record otherwise.

That had a big impact on me when watching it first serialised on the beeb years ago.

Terrifying.

@peterno51 was just about to type a post about that TV serialised version! I watched it back in 1998 when they showed them again on BBC2 (I think the Beeb originally showed them in the early 80s?). I must have been around 14 / 15 years old and it had a huge impact on me.

I've got the blu ray of the Director's Cut film version but never got around to watching it yet. I wonder if it will be as good as I remember.

I wonder if you can get the serialised version rather than the film version, presumably it’s longer?

Such a sad ending though

Nazi Uboat gets sunk, yep that’s a real tearjerker.

That was the point though, it was the first film I remember where the ‘Germans’ were real people, not a stereotypical image.

Oh god, spare me your old world charm.

We followed the crew through hard times, not looking at it from an evil nazi perspective but from a human perspective, until the end when some of that crew and captain were killed in a bombing raid and their boat that they worked throughout to keep them alive gets sunk.
As gritty and grim a war movie as was ever made.

Oh god spare me your empathy for everyone;) . You sound like Mrs kilo at the denouement of True Detective 2 when Vince Vaughan’s character got offed. Oh he was so nice, it’s so sad etc, what about his wife? Ignoring they were on the side of evil throughout.

Ignoring they were on the side of evil throughout.

The side they were fighting for were evil, but most of the people on the ground were ordinary people fighting for what they believed was right or simply through a sense of duty.

Director’s cut? You mean there’s an even longer version!?

Awesome.

Ignoring they were on the side of evil throughout.

The majority of the crew (in fact, I think everyone on the boat with the exception of the first officer) were all deeply cynical about Hitler, the party and the war, IIRC.

Yes and no, the director's cut is longer than the original cinema release but still a good hour and a half shorter than what was originally shown by the BBC over 6 episodes.

Was this the cannibalised version then? The shorter one that missed out huge chunks? Its well worth getting hold of the full fat version if possible.

I watched it back in the day as others did on here, very good and it in no way glorifies war which is the key point.

Is it subtitles (heh) or bad dubbing?

Subtitles. And as with all the truly good subtitled movies you pretty much forget about them as the action on the screen is so mesmerizing.

I have only one thing to say….

ALAAAAAARM!!!!

😀😀😀

For you.

I've just finished reading the book again. Think this is for the third time. Utterly immersing if you'll excuse the pun.
