Up until around '87 mainstream hip hop did exactly the opposite of that and a lot of it still does.

Unfortunately gangsta rap become the mainstream form of the music and I couldn't argue against the idea that gangsta rap does glorify a violent misogynistic culture, for the most part that is exactly what it does. Whether this music has a real influence on society is a bit of an ongoing topic at least since rock 'n roll in the fifties if not earlier.

There is still a lot of very good music out there but you do have to go looking for it. Hip Hop just like rock music has many diverse sub genres. just as rock doesn't start and finish with black sabbath Hip Hop has more to offer than Fifty Cent.

it's a crying shame that even his fellow southamptonites/mushties don't know him, let alone the rest of the world, as he made probably the best hiphop album these shores have seen, possibly one of the best ever. wasn't world changing though, just life-affirming. Music For The Mature B-Boy, buy it STW, it's cuddly
good on Obama for being the bestest ever though, bravo

On the subject of good Hip-Hop docs:

Everyone should check Scratch at some point.

The music completely changed the musical landscape across the world. You only have to look at the sales and chart statistics from the early 80's onwards. We have been so immersed in its permeation of modern culture from music, video games, films to advertising etc, that we don't notice its impact as much. Surely this has to count towards a little bit of world changing?

Yeah of course, and no other music scene in the 20-30 years before hand did this 🙄

Bit disappointed with the programme, i didn't know it was going to be one of those top 50 moments countdown that kept darting from old school to modern day and back

Is it? Hmm, might give it a miss if its been shoe horned into one of CH4's beloved '50 top things' type formats.

Was a little disappointed to be honest.

Some good clips and tunes in there though, a lot of stuff missed out though (obviously, was only two hours after all).
