I have no connection to the Laptops direct website or shop - but wanted to share this as I think it is fantastic value for money:

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/content/aether-cone-wireless-speaker

I live quite close to the shop, so went to have a look (and listen). The unit is a bit of an odd shape but feels very well put together.

The sound is excellent for the size and the inbuilt battery lasts a long time (up to 8 hrs)

I've only had mine for a weekend but it is the best bit of audio kit I have bought since the B&W zeppelin!

So if you need something to listen to while you sip on your craft IPA, stroke your beard and wait for the Pizza oven to warm up - this could be just the thing!

No it does away with all the leads.

I have hooked up my Minix box to it by Bluetooth and that worked well.

I don't have a chromecast, would the wifi connection mean that a 3.5 mm input would not be needed?

I have hooked it up through wifi and Bluetooth, but it also works with airplay too!

Good info on the HUKD website - http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/aether-cone-wireless-hifi-speaker-59-98-delivered-was-300-appliances-direct-2417248?page=9#comments

Good PSA, price is fantastic!

Will stick with my JBL Flip 2 for now, but it's certainly very tempting. Looks great

Can someone post a pic of it on the Aaaargh My Eye thread please...

Tempted if they didn't lie about the price - its £50 (-2p) not £49!

Bluetooth / airplay or wifi

Apparently Bluetooth is not as good a quality as wifi / airplay - not had chance to check yet!

Shame it's not got 3.5mm input, as I'd get a few and run them of my Chromecast audio things... I've got several around the house, so just want slave speakers to make the noise, not do the thinking!

I ordered one apparently firmware updated post loss of rdio streaming service to make it just a speaker

Cost is £52.92 with cheapest delivery

Not my usual style to jump on these things but my wife suggested I got one as I keep nicking the kids. She also reminded me I was owed a birthday present. Then this shows up

So Thanks

It's how I roll 😉
Actually, I did try to order one, but the Paypal trans failed for some reason. Then I decided I didn't really need it.

Quick tech question: would I be able to use this as the sound system for Apple TV? (ie, put what's on my laptop through the apple TV and get the relevant audio through the cone)

Or am I better off just getting something with an optical input?

I bought one of these when they were posted the other week. It works well and replaced a load of wires+electronics that I was using for an airplay setup. The physical interface is really good too, meaning I can just carry the speaker off if I'm doing something without the computer, such as fixing bikes.

I briefly tried finding a way to do airplay with android, and gave up as life is too short for tutorials that begin with "This is easy! First, root your phone…"

Sound is fine, but if you're close by it you don't really hear the treble unless it's pointing right at you (fine if you have the volume up to fill a room though).

That's weird. The controls on mine work via airplay. I've been using it a few weeks and it's been fine.

I popped in as well to have a listen and they sound Ok Tbf. No stock of the black and copper one tho 😥
BUT they have 6200 on the way, salesman showed me they are due around 5th June.

Mine has arrived

It is a big bit of kit. It sounds goods in a mono sort of way. Bass is limited but it at least it doesn't try to pretend. Sounds much better than the JBL flip 3 I was borrowing

The only negatives. Propitiatory charging not USB. Takes a little while to "boot"

I just stream from my phone with blue tooth but has been easy to set up

Glad you like it!

The black and copper one does look a bit funky!

I'm just trying out mine and have to say it's a bit disappointing really.
Considering the rrp of about £300 the sound is lacking any bass whatsoever.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't think there's any way to up it all?
It's ok for a fifty quid speaker but I was expect much more from it TBH.

I guess the size does limit the bass a bit.

Old school positioning of the unit can increase bass (put it in a corner).

I think the balance of the battery life etc its a good unit YVMMV

It's worth looking at the Pure Jongo S3 as well if you're considering one of these. Currently to be found on eBay for about the same price. They're wifi and Bluetooth as well, but do multiroom and you can pair them together for a big stereo sound too (nice for barbecues). They've got a 3.5 Aux input and a claimed 20 hour battery life. I've had a couple of them (2 for £80 BOGOF) for a month or so and am very pleased. I've subsequently bought their big 100W speaker and a couple of adaptors for existing separates systems and the whole lot came to under £300.

I bought a couple of these off the back of this - one as a leaving present for a colleague and another for me as an occasional bbq speaker and to make do until I build up courage to spend a house full of sonos type money.

Not bad. Bass remarks - I guess it depends what you are coming from - sounds fine to me for it's size. The £300 rrp tag is a bit misleading though as it's a crippled device from what it was as a £300 product with the software side totally removed. It works with spotify now whilst it didn't before which will be a bonus for some. I'm using it through airplay which is definitely better sounding than bluetooth. Not sure there would a way of connecting to it through wifi from a non apple product though.

Had mine for a week now and left with mixed feelings.

I think the sound is good for its size and the battery life is great. Used in the garden and the lounge it sounds great.

Connectivity is when I've had issues. First time out it connected great via Bluetooth to my Motorola Moto G v3, but never again. Only way now is via Spotify, but only if I stump up and go premium - tested via the 7 day free trial.

Also cannot get it to connect using Bluetooth dongles attached to my iPod, but they both work perfectly with a cheap £10 Bluetooth speaker we have.

Wife's Moto G has connected a few times without fault, but wondering how long that will last.

Not had those issues with mine at all.........

I am sure I remember a rest to factory settings process in the instructions - have you tried that?

Or do the up volume then 3 presses on the middle speaker button and re-connect the phone and the unit?

I have successfully connected several iphones / kodi box and ipads to mine - I think the sound is better through Airplay or the wifi if you have it though

Yeah, tried 3 factory resets of the cone and can't even remember how many times I've tried to connect using the up volume button and centre button (cone always appears to do what it should and centre button starts to flash blue). Tried switching phone on and off too, but still no joy!

Maybe the Bluetooth on my phone is up the creak? As I say wife's phone connects fine as does my daughter's iphone, but the two iPod Bluetooth dongles don't connect either! Grumpy and frustrated!
