Just do a search on Amazon. I think the cheapest I saw was £38.

I remember a conversation with @Gnusmas about his lad wanting a chainsaw for his birthday, think it must have been on one of the Zoom quizzes a few of us joined. It might have been his 7th or 8th birthday.

My kids would LOVE that.

I wonder if I can get a deal on 2, then they can play at swordfighting.

Get 3 then they can learn juggling. Then soon progress to one-handed juggling.

Was that the little one that's on hotukdeals? I've bought a full sized 12inch one ready to attack 50m of 20ft conifers in the new year but anticipate nothing will be over 20cm in width so maybe the lighter tool would have been a better idea.

Reminds me, I need to start a thread about stump grinding (ahhh, reminds me of my courting days)

@villageidiotdan I'm impressed that you managed to use inches, metres, feet and centimetres in one sentence!

@tthew well remembered lol. Although he only turned 8 in May so would have been around 5 or 6 at that point I'm guessing and had been asking for a while by then.

He's been wanting one for a few years now and a leaf blower too. When I explained we didn't have any trees to do anything with he then wanted a forest as well 😂

Jesus, just go buy a Silky fox hand saw, be (so much) safer,  more useful, and it will actually last  (unlike that piece of S***)

They are shockingly fast at cutting.  Wouldn't get that model though as it can't be sharpened so would have to eventually be thrown away as well.  Better with something like a natanoko.  Not sure they are safer though as they are so sharp you can cut yourself just looking at them the wrong way

Gnusmas, bring him over asap, it's power tool central here.

Latest project is to fill dumpy bags with a leaf and lawn clipping mulch. To make compost for a bloke I know.

I've also noticed some fallen branches. I have two chainsaws, a couple of folding saws and axes by the dozen. See you soon?

@Leffeboy Wasn't aware that they sold ones you can sharpen, but they sell replacement blades for the gomtaro's, I've just bought my 3rd in 12 odd years. Yes they're very sharp, and you could cut yourself, but that's got to be better than that dodgy piece of rubbish with a spinning chain

@boriselbrus  Haha, me chuckle.  What can I say, a child of the 80s - don't come for dinner as I use the same ecelectic approach to measuring ingredients

Right.

At this point, being the threads op, I must state that I accept no liability for any events that unfold due to this thread.

More so if WCA is in anyway involved.😉

Gnusmas and the kids visited this afternoon. No blood was lost! Unfortunately, the saw seems to have decided to go on strike. It was working pretty well up until then. I'm sure pics will soon follow.

@z1ppy the induction hardened ones can't be sharpened but the rest are good and they sell a file set at the right angles for about a third of a replacement blade.  We were put onto them by someone who came to cut down a bunch of stuff for us.  Most of the work was done with a silky on a stick with the chainsaw only used for the very big stuff.  Got one now and love it.  Feels way safer than a chainsaw and just takes a little getting used to the pull action

Here is Shelby, now 8, finally getting his wish of nearly 4 years of using a mini chainsaw to cut wood, he absolutely loved it. In all fairness he helped load 3 wheelbarrows full and stacked the wood afterwards too. Thank you @Ambrose for helping make this happen, we all had a really good and enjoyable afternoon.

I do that all the time! As a nearly 70 yo, growing up with imperial, then spending years in print where everything is metric, or measured in points, ems, ens, etc, I just mix’n’match.

Just to mention, Opinel do a folding saw, like a bigger version of their pocket knives, for not a lot of money, and they’re wickedly sharp.

Nice one, ambrose!

Whilst we're here, what's the opinion on hand chainsaws? Worth getting a proper one or picking up a set of chainsaw chains from Lidl and adding toggles?

My opinion on hand chainsaws? A really good concept but that particular model has a couple of flaws. The bar is spring tensioned and then locked in place by one nut. It lost tension very quickly indeed.

You need to be very safety conscious, the M.O. of the device encourages a rotational downward arc towards the user. Al was very conscious of this indeed when Shelby was cutting. His shark onesie wasn't made of Kevlar. A cut to the thigh would more than sting.

The bar oiler is a small manual pump, very akin to a carb. priming pump on eg. Stihl petrol leaf blower, strimmer etc. It has a VERY small capacity indeed and is best filled with a syringe. Keeping the bar oiled needs to be done regularly

Unit comes with two small batteries plus charger. Once finished we had plenty of charge left in the unit. However, despite filling three barrows of cordwood quite a bit (2/3?) was cut by a full fat chainsaw. So I suppose it took about half a battery to fill a barrow. Ish!

Two chains and a sharpening file are provided. I have no idea about spares availability. This, plus the inability to properly tension the chain are my main considerations prior to buying one myself.

I've bought into Makita and I see that Katsu do a Makita battery compatible version at £34.99 which is very tempting if I could be sure that the tension could be maintained.

When all is said and done though, the unit we used worked well for the couple of hours but then once we had finished it just stopped. Hopefully a one off and Amazon will replace or refund.
