Ive said this before and its been implied that i'm a Meldrewesque character, but why do I only get alerts from this lot in the middle of the day. The aurora is not likely to be visible from Scotland as its too light.
Genuine question by the way, am I stupidly missing some forecasting element for when it gets dark?

i have the iOS app, and get alerts whenever they are issued. check you don't have a DND setup - mine doesn't push data between 7.30pm and 6am.

oh, and theres only been a couple of alerts over the last few weeks.

It's nuclear winter here today so never mind the aurora, I'd just like to see the sun

I'm fairly sure it'll be dark later on.

Well when you go outside you might not be able to see where you're going, that can mean it's dark.

But its already gone down to 'no significant activity'

Ah- I see we have an expert in 🙂

And as i'm sure you are all aware, I meant Is there any component of the aurorawatch alerts that give any indication what the level of activity might be when it does get dark.

solar activity. The sun is quite far away, the particles that cause the show take time to arrive.
IME, in Scotland, on a clear night, with forecasts during the day, hit rate = about 60%. Although if you choose to sit in the house moaning about it, I think that would be a bit lower.

Now we're getting somewhere, so am I wasting my time then, if there is an alert in the middle of the night I get up there and then and go and look. How long does it take for the particles to get here.
Last time I saw the aurora I got no alert till it was all over.
Im not meaning to have a a pop incidently, I am very interested in seeing the aurora and I'm always happy to improve my chances with more information. I check most clear nights and i'm looking foreward to the eclipse too.

You might want to keep an eye on this site http://www.aurora-service.eu/aurora-forecast/

Now we just need it to get dark and all the clouds to disappear!!

Only way I'd see any aurora down here is if I drove well out into the countryside, because of all the light pollution.
Did see it once near Avebury around 1am, in the winter of 1982, IIRC.

I think that site's being hammered. It's just getting dark but it's really misty here in gloucestershire 🙁

So it's dark now, but cloudy here in Doncaster. Is it worth my while driving out from under the cloud? If so, where's in with a chance of seeing it? Any body got clear skies and a view of the northern horizon?

Bloody hell. I just got in from a bike ride in Central Sweden where I managed to find enough altitude to clear the fog. Sunset was gorgeous but if I'd known there could be aurora I'd have stayed out longer and gone looking. What's happening tomorrow night?

So why aren't the alerts working for me? I didn't get an enmail or a text...

Hopefully I didn't miss much but I'm guessing it is going to be next winter before I get any more chances.

It was one of the strongest there's been for a long time, reports of them being seen in Norfolk.

I went for a drive over to the Woodhead around midnight. patchy thick fog across most of South Yorks on the way up and a bit hazy even on the tops. A faint glow to the north with no flares or movement was the best I could say for it. I'm not going to count that as a proper sighting. I'll see them properly one day.

Wonder if I'll see it from a plane...

We were told to look right on the plane back from Tromso on the 9th March. pilot claimed Northern Lights were visible. I was on the other side and, although there was a lot of interest and people craning their necks from the aisle, I heard no "oooh!"s or "aaah!"s (or "øøøh!"s or "åååh!"s).

We did see some pretty good lights while we were up there. A mate took this when we saw them on 7th, I think. I love the way the full moon's lit up the cloud in from of the aurora.
