8pm tonight an asteroid the size of a cruise ship should be visible above the skies of Wales as it grazes the earth in a once in 200-year event.

Can't it be diverted to land on Bethesda?

I'm a bit puzzled where the welsh part of that comes from, it'll be just as visible from the rest of the UK.

It's worth noting that we're talking about a mag 9.5 speck (well below limiting visual magnitude) moving slowly against the background stars, not something that'll be particularly dramatic for those who aren't astronomy geeks. If you're staying up til 5-ish it'll be passing the beehive which will make for a good long exposure photo - but then if you have an eq AP mount you're probably not going to be learning about it from here...

Probably:

because of the timing - we should get a good view of it in the night sky above Wales

That'll be about it...

He said that the "cruise ship-sized" asteroid would pass as close as three times the distance from the earth to the moon.

So not really a "graze" then.

If you're on top of Snowdon, would shouting "DUCK" be appropriate! 😉

Yep, it was pretty much exactly as I described up there. Which is still pretty cool.

I wasn't in wales though.
