‘Limited time deal’ on Amazon.
Paperwhite Kindle now £99.
The smart money’s on the paperwhite kids version. Identical hardware, with a case and extended warranty for £95.
Do the kids' ones come without ads? If so that's worth getting. The ads are very annoying IMHO, you can remove them for £10 IIRC.

Don't even notice mine, they only display on the lock screen don't they?

Possibly, I don't honestly know. But the idea that Amazon would try to subliminally shove adverts into my eyeballs on a device I paid them money for. It's horrible and dystopian.
Now I get a nice graphic of the book I'm reading (1984, obvs. Or possibly Ubik by PKD).

Yeah! Like a TV right in your hands!! 😱😱😱😱

You see, I think you've fallen foul of the ads. Me, I've never spent anything on the books advertised on the lock screen. You, you've spent a tenner. Maybe that's all the ads are actually advertising...
Makes you think
My Paperwhite has ads, only ever on the lock screen. Doesn’t bother me in the slightest. You have to swipe to open the reader anyway. Plus it only advertises books I have for some reason.

I've got news for you, most physical books have ads for other books on them too. Usually for books by the same author, but still... 🙂
Anyway - I have an older Paperwhite, with ads, per above only the lock screen and since the lock screen has to show something, I'm happy for it to show ads for books. It's really not intrusive at all.
I contacted amazon and complained that the ads were of an adult nature and my kids used it, they turned the ads off for free! Worth a try if you can be bothered.
The ads have suggested stuff I actually wanted to buy, the only time they really annoy me is when they get stuck on something I already own and just keep recommending it over and over.
Looks like the posh kindles have got fair chunk off the price too. Anyone move from poverty spec to ultimate spec and fundamentally changed their use in a good way?
I keep on trying to kid myself that my old early gen paperwhite is the weak link in me reading more when I think it's actually my inability to stay awake when I have a book balanced on my stomach.
@superficial: I’ll find out tomorrow ☺️
@convert: I traded in my ancient (turned out to 3rd gen kindle) for £5.
In the meantime, I splashed out on a Kobo Clara hd to gain access to books from my library.
Similar screen to the kindle paperwhite, and a massive upgrade over my 3G kindle.
Regardless of how much Amazon give you for your old kindle, you’re guaranteed 20% off your next kindle purchase.
Not one to gloat, but with the current discount, mine has worked out at £76.
Is the water proofing, resolution and LEDs, on the Paperwhite/Kids worth the extra cash - £60ish. I might be getting one for holiday reading
Basic Kindle is now £39.99
Thanks for the PSA, I'll take a look as mine has a little scratch on the screen which directs the backlight straight through the text as a bright spot!
Ads, its tempting to turn them off for a tenner, but it really is just a text screensaver that displays the book cover when you swipe to unlock, and if you go to the main home page, (which you are only on once in a blue moon when not reading or looking at your library) about 30% of the screen shows a strip of suggested book covers!
Although HexhamStu must have an interesting reading history, good tip though!

Ha, that’s a good point! I hadn’t thought of that. In my case, I moaned to customer services and they eventually removed the ads at no cost as hexhamstu says.
I personally really object to being the target of subliminal ads everywhere. I do everything I practically can to avoid them. It’s just my quirk, I’m aware most people don’t find the ads too bothersome.

I personally really object to being the target of subliminal ads everywhere. I've an image of you now ninja'ing round on an evening debadging your entire neighbourhood!

Only you can answer that. The increased resolution is likely handy if you're viewing books with diagrams. Waterproofing will be good if you're planning on taking it to the beach / pool / in the bath. If you're not doing those things then probably not.

Unable to resist a bargain, I replaced a 10 year old Paperwhite with the newer version last June when they were offering them for £69.99. I really don't notice any difference in resolution and lighting despite what the specs say, though I only ever use mine for text. The waterproofing is reassuring because I often use mine in the bath but tbh in 10 years of reading the old one in the bath I never dunked it once! The battery life on the new one is no better than on the old one, despite that one's age so on balance I should probably have not bothered, even at the bargain price.

The ads on Kindles aren't in any sense subliminal, they're right there on front of you as a static image!
I noticed a huge improvement in reading comfort with the 300ppi screen on my kobo, compared to my 3rd gen kindle.
I’d prefer the slightly larger screen in the paperwhite for reading periodicals.
All my reading is periodical. I can't imagine a screen size improving that.
You could buy the basic kindle, and if you don’t like it, trade it in with amazon.
You’re guaranteed 20% off some other kindle, plus a discretionary sum, depending on the old kindles age/ condition. Maybe thats where the smart money is.

Understandable, but the Kindle ads are about the least intrusive imaginable. They are just on the lock screen, they don't appear at any point when using it (or at least they didn't when I looked at my Mum's).
Oh, also eBay is awash with older used Kindles for not much money. They can be fully re-used on a new account, no drawbacks.
the idea that Amazon would try to subliminally shove adverts into my eyeballs on a device I paid them money for.
I know what you're saying, but it's not actually subliminal is it? You're quite aware of the adverts and how easy they are to dismiss/ignore...
Plus if someone is so suggestable that kindle lock screen ads would actually work on them, they're probably suggestable enough to have paid an extra tenner for a very minor software edit...
Mine is tied to the missus account, and mostly spends it's time in airplane mode, when it does get connected and the ad's update it's for chick lit that I'll never buy and she'll maybe pop for the paperback if one of her mates says its good... But probably not.
I know what you’re saying, but it’s not actually subliminal is it?
The ones you have noticed aren't, no...
I know what you’re saying, but it’s not actually subliminal is it?
Dunno. I suppose when I say ‘subliminal’ I mean that I’m not actively looking. So while I might pick up a kindle and swipe to turn it on, trying to pay no attention to the ads, I’ll no doubt catch one or two.
Collected my paperwhite kids edition on Thu.
No ads. For a very brief moment after I’ve flipped open the case, there’s a generic picture, and then it goes straight to the home page.
Very pleased with my purchase thus far. I bought a glass tempered screen incase of any clumsiness and to minimise any possible glare when outside.
I’m a few generations beyond the Harry Potter stuff, but I’ll take a gander sometime.
As with my kobo, the adjustable backlight ‘temperature’ control is a major plus.
Super-clear text too.
😁

Bloody hell, get a grip. They're only advertising books that you may want to buy based on your reading history. There's nothing subliminal about it, and its only on the home screen, it's not like they keep popping up while you're reading. It's hardly room 101.
You could buy the basic kindle, and if you don’t like it, trade it in with amazon.
Gone for the basic one. but there's no trade in option for the latest model, only up to 8th gen.
Not that bothered TBH, this one will suffice
And, I've just emailed the last 5 STW magazines to it 👍
Hi all, strange question I know but do you know if it's possible to put MP3s on to the newer kindle, (as there is an audiobook thing)? I have an old one that I use loads, but often read in noisy places so put my phone on to shut out the noise...it would be good if I could do that in one device.
