just a reminder, gas and electric are to skyrocket tomorrow, get your metre readings photographed and entered into the system tonight, so you will be charged correctly and not have your usage estimated and therefore a portion billed on the new double priced

Good luck trying to give your readings to utility warehouse.
I think they've turned off their computers.

You only need to give a reading if you're not already on a fixed-rate deal

and for those on pre-payment meters

I reckon the metre will be much the same tomorrow as it has been for the last few years ;).

It's got to be tempting to round the meter up a wee bit to get more electricity at the lower price. Not that I can do that as mine's all up in the air as my new provider are still struggling to get my account set up since the last one collapsed.

Don't smart meters transmit at least a daily reading? Plus my billing date happens to be end of month anyway so regardless my reading will get pinged off today in any event 🙂

Does this need to be done if you’ve got a smart meter?

Octopus too

Re smart meters - worth at least taking a photo in case your provider makes a mistake in their favour

Given the weather over the last few weeks vs the next, I think I'd be quids in if they prorated the usage across the month to be honest.

Depends if it's an early one or a later one. If it's a later one, probably not. If it's early one, and you've switched providers since it was installed, it's probably not actually smart any more as they lose the 'connection' to the provider if you switch.

its on a new build built 2019 and BG only came to link it all up after that - so assuming its all good

that said ive just been on BG site and it has no smart metre readings from 16th feb- every single day is on there historically ~circa 1.5 years back but suddenly stopped 16th feb, it shows the amount we've used every day so it is recording, so either its not linking it to my account, or BG website has stopped linking it? anyone else in the same boat?

My smart meter wasn’t very smart with my original provider, Bristol, it sent readings at the wrong time so bills were always estimated. They got taken over and then that company went bust owing me over £500. Now with BG, not had a bill, an estimate or anything. I’ll be taking pictures of the meters.

Most likely the website only updates at a fixed point after the end of your billing cycle, say 1st of the calendar month after the end of your bill. They'll update all the customer records at the end date irrespective of bill cycle.

So your bill cycle probably runs 17-16th, website will show all your readings to the 16/2 today, "tomorrow" all your readings 17/02-16/03 will show.

@dangeourbrain

thanks - not sure tbh i only really checked it every so often but always seem to remember it being upto date per se, but your likely right

ive just checked and last metre reading was taken 16/3 so least it is still regularly sending readings - our fixed term ran out feb so now just on a variable, assuming my bill projetions are about to double DD every month

@oscillatewildly

I have the same issue, Have reported a while back to BG who will be replacing my meters in a few weeks as they can't seem to fix it, will be taking readings today. I'm suspicious of errors being made in their favour, I've submitted readings over the phone a few weeks ago and my account is yet to be updated.

Shell Energy site is ****ed by this too. Small tinpot company I guess, unable to cope with the user load 😐

Correct - this happened to me. It's now essentially electronic waste.

There's an explainer here: https://www.ovoenergy.com/guides/energy-guides/smets-1-and-2-new-smart-meter-generation

SP still down. I give readings monthly - been monitoring electric as we've been cutting out anything that's heavy use. I've got the reading but also need to put in the Gas - will photo both tonight.

I’ve got a smart meter, installed Christmas before last, after my old boiler died. I’m going to take a photo anyway.

Pre-payment with EON here, we're going to be a bit screwed I guess. At least it's getting lighter of an evening

its on a new build built 2019 and BG only came to link it all up after that – so assuming its all good

If the communications hub is a separate box on a cable, it's SMETS1. If the hub is bolted to the top, it's SMETS2.

If you have the older type, the BG ones can be upgraded over-the-air. Whether this has actually happened to yours or not is another matter, they're all supposed to be converted by the end of this year. When I switched from the incumbent BG to Pure Planet, it took a couple of weeks to 'wake up' and start working.

Small tinpot company I guess, unable to cope with the user load 😐

You don't scale a system to account for the one fringe case in decades where half the Internet has caused a panic. It's the same as the GSM network melting at 23:59 on New Year's Eve, massively overprovisioning the other 364 days to cope with that one spike in demand would be madness.

Why rush to get the meter readings in today? As long as you take them, preferably with photos, just submit them in a couple of days. You have the option to say which day they were taken.

Octopus are installing smart meters today, so they should sort the readings for me!

I tried just now with Bulb.
“Error with reading, please try again in 24 hours”
Meanwhile got emails saying thanks for your meter reading.

Eon Next all is working fine, I was just able to submit mine. I'm still not convinced I really needed to as it's a new smart meter but who knows. Don't want to be the only fool that didn't.

I did a metre reading – it’s 100cm

I only came in this thread to make this joke...
I've checked, mine is still reading 100cm.

Did mine yesterday (London Power / Octopus backed). Was fine.

Without wanting to sound like a smug ****, didn't we all (as a generally intelligent bunch) suspect this might happen and submit readings a few days back?

That's what I did and I'm pretty stupid.

Which means you've got a few days consumption which may or may not be charged at the increased rate.

The difference will be a handful of pounds if you put a reading in say last Monday.

Better than not getting a reading in at all and it being fully estimated...

Having spent half a day trying to log into my energy provider app* and getting messages saying "we are experiencing a high level of demand...", I got an email from them a couple of hours ago saying "please log in and submit a meter reading..."

What the **** do you think I've been trying to do you imbeciles?!

*OK, slight exaggeration, it was half a dozen attempts over the course of the day.

According to Octopus (on R4 news yesterday) you can take reading today (their tarrif goes up a day later) & submit in the next few days, so no need to panic.

Yep did mine on the 29th as I suspected there would be issues, plus I've been all over the country for work and I'd forget otherwise.

We have the perfect storm of a none functioning smart meter. They replaced a broken 'dumb' meter with a smart meter in Sep 2020. For a year they charged us on estimated bills for a meter that was residing in a SSE skip somewhere. That resulted in threats to take us to court for none payment. Now they acknowledge the new meter exists but it's not connected to their system. I can take the meter reading manually but as the system thinks it's a smart meter there is no facility to submit the reading. I get a lovely condescending message on screen telling me not to be so daft. We don't get billed as no meter readings on a smart meter account seems to break the space time continuum - or at least SSE's laughable attempt at a 'system'. So it's frequent phone calls to a pleasant enough but seemingly powerless bod who promises to resolve things and apparently logs my meter reading somewhere. The promised booking of an engineer never happens and every month we repeat the process.

SSE are shit shit shit. We had no intention of staying with them but now no one else wants to take new customers and as the system is borked anyway we are stuck with the bellends. Did I say that SSE are shit? I'd say what I actually mean but sadly the swear filter would knock it out and my feelings would not come up on a Google search forevermore. Anyway SSE are incompetent shits.
