Just as everyone's been getting themselves shiny new PS5s and Xbox Xs, I've managed to get myself...... An old PS4! From FB marketplace.
I've really enjoyed my Xbox One over the last few years, it's a great console. But I can't play The Last of Us or Spiderman on it, but the new to me PS4 can.
One thing that's horrified me after the Xbox is the noise it makes! The fan's so noisy. I'm going to strip it down over the weekend and see if I can make it less ridiculous. Sounds like a 747 at the moment. I'd seen a tip about running it in 1080p rather than 4k and that did make it a little quieter but still over the top. And I'd like to see Spideyman webbing around NYC in stunning 4k really.
Anyway, any other PS only games I should look at? The one's I've had the most fun with on the Xbox were Forza, RDR2, Halo, etc. Any suggestions? Or shall I just stick with The Last of Us and Spideyman?
I was given this:
A bit early to say but it feels like a chilled game to play.
Do you like Tomb Raider? Uncharted? Can be linear but decent short range fun.
I also enjoyed some Assassin’s Creed games and also Shadow Of The Colossus
Don’t forget PS Plus subscribers have free monthly titles and PS Now has loads.
Racing games? Wipeout HD and Dirt 4 are both v good (and of course v different) IME
For online stuff and mass replay potential there is GTA5 and Rocket League. GTA5 online has so many jobs/races/games included it makes it almost unfeasibly bargainous.
PS4 are very noisy, they’re not 4k though.
I got a PS3 a little while ago to compliment my Xbox One. (There's a joke here that's beneath even me.)
The Uncharted series is good. Heavy Rain also if you like story-driven games; that developer has a couple of subsequent titles that I've not played (I have Beyond: Two Souls, I've just not got around to it yet).
Horizon Zero Dawn and the latest God of War are two of the best games I've played
PS4 Pros are 4k, which is what I've got.
I still play this more than anything on the PS4

Horizon Zero Dawn
Oh yeah, that's a good shout. Again, not played it personally but it looks amazing.
Tomb Raider, Dirt and GTA are all available on the XBox, so played them all.
I'd forgotten about Wipeout, loved it on the PS3!
Uncharted looks interesting as does Horizon and God of War. Good suggestions, thanks all!
its a good time to get a ps4, (i might one day get one)
currently you can get a host of game free fromt he store, no subscription required....
current ratchet and clank
but horizon zero dawn is free at the end of the month/april some time
I still play this more than anything on the PS4
Have you played it in VR? I tried on Christmas Day (whilst stood up). I didn't stay stood up for long.
PS4 Pros are 4k, which is what I’ve got.
Yes they are, sort of. I have of those too.
Free games from the store?? I'm checking that out tonight, thanks for that!
For the noise I highly recommend replacing the thermal paste as per this video:

I've just done it this weekend after finally getting fed up of having to shout at my son in the same room because of the noise. It's made a massive difference to how much it can take before the fan kicks in. They can now play minecraft without being deafened but it does still ramp up a bit when doing more demanding stuff.
oh, and this game too
ps4 rez free
if you like dance music, this is awesome…..
Christ, I remember Rez from... the PS2 I think?
You know that over in that Japan they released a, uh, discreet massage peripheral for it?
on the pc version, and i expect this ps4 version, other gamepads can be set to vibrate too, place them over your body for the full experience 😀
I bought one PS4 recently and it was so noisy I had to turn the volume up full waking everyone in the house! I sacked that off and gave it back for a refund. Got a second which was much quieter. Since upgraded to PS4 Pro which isn’t too bad.
Last of Us and Last of Us2 are epic. My some is playing an early Uncharted game which he’s enjoying.
Have fun!
Ps Rez looks right up my street, just downloaded it (free!).
Elite dangerous
Horizon zero dawn
Borderlands
The Witcher
Fallout 4 goty
Uncharted
GT sport
Shadow of the Colossus + last guardian
Ghost of tushimisa
Infamous 2nd son

How did you play it without a headset? 😎

Neither my PS4 nor PS4 pro are noisy. They barely make any more noise than the Sky box.

My Pro makes almost no noise in minecraft. There's definitely something going on there.
The only game it ramps up slightly is Elite Dangerous.
You might want to try re-starting the console (i.e. not just going into rest mode), I have a feeling that some apps can get stuck.
molgrips - it's fixed now with replacing the thermal paste. It's quite an old model so the paste had degraded over time and wasn't pulling the heat away to the heatsink and fan.
I've taught the children to always turn off rather than rest mode to make sure everything is cleared.
My pal just gave me a PS4 a few months ago. I was still on a 360...
Mine is not noisy at all. Games wise
God of War - superb story, amazing fun, quite challenging, rich and detailed world and lore
RDR2 - one of the best games ever
Last of Us - didn't enjoy quite as much as I'd hoped, but still excellent
Far Cry 5 - riddled with shockingly bad dialogue, bugs and feels about 10 years older than it
actually is. Quite fun though
Doom Eternal - fun but a bit fast for my brain
Death Stranding - just started. Super weird, quite slow but I really like it. Looks stunning as well.
I am another that has never had noise issues with my PS4. The PS3 was a different matter altogether - although mine was one of the original backward compatible ones (with 3D PS badge rather than a sticker) so I sold it on Ebay for almost as much as my PS4 cost (bar about £30).
Can't recommend enough Horizon Zero Dawn, Spiderman, Last of Us (1 and 2), God of War.
Never got on with Far Cry or Uncharted.
I think there might be a dust problem with PS4, ours has definitely got noiser over time. Or alternatively newer games are just pushing the hardware further... I do plan on taking ours apart and running a vacuum over it to see if it's just dust build up or whether the thermal paste needs replacing, as its obviously fairly old now.
Doom Eternal is only £5 at Asda. Both PS4 and Xbox

The noise issue is fairly widespread according to Google, especially on the PS4Pro. Those where it's whisper quiet, you're the lucky ones! I've got the special torx screwdriver and some paste and thermal pads to strip it down and sort at the weekend, I'll report back. It was getting noisy even playing "the last of us" 1 (which isn't a game that should be pushing the hardware I wouldn't have thought) so I'm hoping that it's a combination of old paste and dust choking the heat sink & fan. Looking at the videos it doesn't look TOO bad to strip down, but there are so many screws! Bound to lose a couple 🙂
Downloaded a couple of free games last night, I'll play Spiderman again next week when my son's with me. We had a go on it last weekend and it was great fun. Looking forward to trying Horizon ZD sometime too.
Nier: Automata- quite simply bonkers brilliant. Almost impossible to describe without giving away a million WTF moments.
Possibly the most surprising, awesome game of the 4th gen consoles
Stripped my PS4 down last weekend to see if I could stop the jet engine noises. Fairly straightforward to do (loads of screws....), needed a T8 torx screwdriver, some thermal paste and some thermal pads.
It was the first time it'd been opened up - the security seals were still over the screws. All sorted now, it's as quiet as an Xbox One 🙂

There's apparently an 'easy' setting on Nier: Automata that effectively neutralises the combat. Guessing that you still have to fight but it makes it really easy. My wife can't really handle much in the way of combat, although she's getting better.
Has anyone mentioned Control yet? Just started but has the makings of a great game. Last of Us series has been outstanding, so much so that playing Part 2 again from the start.
Death Stranding I’m struggling to get in to though I’m sure i just need to commit some time to it for it to make sense.
