So I have finally bought a PS4 (£194 with RDR) and am looking for further game recommendations. I played lots of COD on my PS3 but started to tire of it towards the last few releases and also enjoyed Last of Us. Bearing in mind I have a huge back catalogue of games I could get very cheaply on Ebay, what would you suggest I look at?

Cheers

What type of game do you play?

Platform, horror,
Shooting,
Racing or adventure?

Also really enjoyed Horizon Zero Dawn.

As above, COD and Last of Us (so role playing / shoot 'em ups). Definitely not football games and have never liked GTA. I used to play loads of Doom / Wolfenstein back in the day so the reboot of Doom looks fun for mindless shooting?

The Last of us. - Greatest computer game ever made.

I can't understand why anyone likes RDR2. For me it's an incredibly dull GTAV where you're trapped in a world where everyone is stuck with a stupid horse and oddly seem perfectly happy about it.

new DOOM is good. Mindless and fast paced goodness.

Dishonoured (1 & 2) is good - If you like a shooty/magic powers/stealth first person adventure with some nice twists and turns and has just about the right mix of collecting shit/modding powers/weapons to not get tedious.

Gran Turismo if you like racing cars, especially online racing.

GT, Dishonoured, Doom & TLAO all come up a lot in PS store offers/sales cheap. There's no role playing in either of the last two. (I can't stand RPGs but there are loads of 'em cheap/free on PSN/PS+ too)

That's the last Resident Evil you're thinking of. I only played the prologue demo and it properly gave me the willies.

Dishonoured 2 is great, but you need to be a stealth fan to get the most out of it IMO - completing without being spotted/without killing anyone etc.

Quite enjoyed my playthrough of Far Cry 5, kept me entertained for 20 hours or so and I didn't complete all of it. Will probably go back to it and play it again.

Borderlands 2 - The Handsome Collection can be had cheaply these days and comes with an absolute ton of content (essentially two games plus loads of add on content). A good mix of fast FPS with some RPG elements as well, plus it has its funny moments.

The new DOOM is great fun and there is a new one coming out soon as well, DOOM Eternal.

Has anyone mentioned God of War?

I've been looking for similar recommendations and bought most of the above. I bought God of War and to be honest, I'm bored of if a couple of hours in. I have no idea how it managed to get game of the year.
I find it very linear, repetitive and the menu/RPG elements seem very fussy. Looks glorious though and the axe throwing is a neat touch.

RDR2 is amazing. People complain about sluggish controls, but fail to realise that it's not a futuristic/hyperactive shooter. Arthur and co are far from athletes and I think the controls really reflect this 🙂

GT Sport has been a revelation with a wheel! I've bought a Logitech G29 to play with it and now I'm waiting here for a seat/cockpit setup to be delivered!

Just completed a run through of Uncharted 4 and loved that. It was just the right difficulty on normal to be enjoyable without frustrating. Also loved The Last of Us for similar reasons.

Next on my list are Horizon and Spider Man. I've not looked much past these yet. I do enjoy some RPG stuff (had a brief go at Dragon Age Inquisition). I've also got over 1100 hours on Skyrim on the PC and played Morrowind/Oblivion extensively too.

I also didn't get the hype for Witcher 3. I've had a full play through on the PC and it was OK.

Rocket League - should be cheap too.

Fantastic online game, there's nothing else out there like it.

I’d always say get the exclusives for each system which means buying each hardware platform for each console generation. Not prohibitive if you time it right and get access to a decent back catalogue, which is pretty much where we are now. Still doesn’t help finding space under the TV.

First thing is PS+ worth 40 quid a year, but look for prepay codes or deals from cdkeys to keep the cost down. MonthlyFree games are a mixed bag of utter junk and a few decent ones to keep it worthwhile. Need to download monthly as you’ve no access to Past games. Anyway, onto what’s good:

God of war. Bad dad sim with blood and gore. Boy!

Nier Automata. Give it 10-15 hours or so, get into new game+ and revel in it. Future classic, join the cult now.

Not played Shadow of the colossus twice already? Play it, feel bad, you monster.

Gran Turismo up to the limits of a pad. I always found you hit a point at which the cars are too twitchy and powerful for a pad.

Last of us and uncharted combos.

Fancy a challenge? Not strictly PS4 only, but anything from From Software: Dark souls / demon souls series or bloodborne. Great games, but not exactly forgiving.

It was on the ShopTo EBay store when they were doing a 15% off discount a couple of days ago - I’d been holding out for sub-£200 for that package so very happy 🙂

Overwatch but requires PSN. Its an oldie but goodie. Pretty much paint ball sessions with loads of different characters. Great for pickup and play.

To add my 2p and come at it from a different side.

Don't get RDR2; I've spent 2.5hrs trotting about on a horse and had 5 minutes of mild 'action'. I have found some biscuits and murdered Bambi in place of entertainment. Don't bother.

Same with Black Ops 4. I've loved every single COD release but this is just crap. It's a poor pastiche of Fortnite which doesn't interest me as I'm not 10 years old. No campaign mode is serious flaw.

Both will be going to Music Magpie after the holidays.

Doom is good, though!

I’ve not had an issue with that, it’s incredibly immersive if you stick to the main story missions, rather than wander round aimlessly.

That's impressive I find it's the other way around, ride for 5 minutes with a plan to get somewhere but end up caught up in a mission or fighting those damn O'Driscolls

Went back to do some stuff on RDR2 and met some O'Driscoll's, it was like meeting some old friends. Obviously shot them all in the head and burnt the corpses though.

Just to add to the list - what about Battlefield 1? Similar to CoD but should be cheap now that Battlefield V is out.
