Not played a game for a VERY long time but to soften the blow of not being able to go to the pub I bought a PS4 today and downloaded Moto GP, Grand Theft Auto and Beach Buggy Racing.

All seems fine as a single player but can't race/play against my Wife in the same room! Both controllers are set up but when you press the PS button to join game all you get is the 'control' switches to the other controller or the option for online subscription.

Do you have to be set up as 'friends' or something and does the two player option then appear with split screen etc.

Apologies if this is a numpty question but Google only threw up one solution which didn't work!

Most games don't support split-screen two player, but some do. It tends to be arcadey titles, but also Minecraft. If you want split-screen two player games you have to look for them.

GTA definitely doesn't do split screen. It would be a technical impossibility, probably.

Minecraft and Rocket League are the only 2 games we have that do what you ask.

Most everything else requires a second PS/online.

Best family in the same room fun is with our old Wii U (or switch)

Thanks. Not so bothered about split screen, all we want to do is race against each other ie. have control of separate cars/bikes. Is this possible?

Is this possible?

Not without split screen (usually).

Make sure you’re both signed in with an account or have enabled guest play otherwise it will just assign the controller to the signed in person.

Not sure about those games but Overcooked was a hit with my wife for 2-player couch gaming.

Guacamelee is good fun too on PS4.

So I can't invite my Wife as a 'friend' and compete against her on the same game on one PS (with separate controllers), or am I completely misunderstanding this?

You can, but it depends on the game. Not all of them have the option

beach buggy racing and (depending on which version) moto gp do what you want I think

In PS4 you have to set up a separate profile for your wife, then when you press the PS button and it asks you who is playing, you tell the PS4 its her, and then you should* be able to do what you want

if you want to find more games, it seems the term to search is 'couch multiplayer'. Overcooked is great, as mentioned above.

Little Big Planet the first one, was great on PS3. Single screen, but you both move your own character. A think it would be called a 2d platform game(?). At least one of the later games is on PS4. One of the very few games my wife would willingly play.

Only on some games. It's something you can expect on all games.

And split screen is a requirement for some games, otherwise how would you deal with being in two places or two points on the course.

As above, you should set up a profile or 'account' on the device, you don't have to subscribe to anything just add a name.

How could you race each other on one screen without splitting the views? In order to control your vehicle/player you will need to view your vehicle/player/position. Add a second vehicle/player and you have added a second view/position.

+1 Rocket League - saw a couple of friends play it Xmas time and they seem to enjoy it a lot

I've had a lot of local 2P mileage from the Lego series of games, if that's of any interest?

Thanks for the advice, now sorted with Gran Turismo on split screen for starters. Shame it doesn't seem to have the option, on my download at least, for the same on Moto GP 🙁
