...currently not having much luck with google....all I'm finding it about when they stopped manufacturing ps3s with the ps2 chip which is not relevant

I have an old PS3 I've fired up for the kids to play.  It 100% used to play ps2 games fine, as I remember the reason I bought it was my ps2 died.

It now says PS2 disks aren't supported.  Ps1 games work (wow at the graphics being bad)

I did apply updates when I first fired it up, and I think that must have removed the ability to use ps2 games.

So, is there any way to reverse whatever update I did (if thats indeed the problem) and get the ps2 games working again.

Asking for my boys aged 8 and 6 (and definitively not me....)

Spend £500 on a ps5 has been ruled out by SWMBO

Is it the original "fat" PS3?  Or the newer slimline PS3?  Maybe there was some kind of permanent update built in with the newer models?

Edit:  Sorry, I missed the "used to play" part on 1st reading - ignore me!

I've also got one of the early PS3's that played PS1+2 games. They simplified the internals quite quickly didn't they so this was no longer possible?

Anyway, last time I checked, ours still played all of them. It's set up in my son's room and up to date so I'll try later and report back.

yes its a fat original one.  I am certain it used to play ps2 games.  in fact I can't actually find any physical ps3 games which makes me think I didn't actually bother getting any newer ones.  Though they could have been lost at some point in various moves.

It's not a simple answer...

The really early ones, the 20GB and 60GB storage ones were backwards compatible, they pretty much had a mini PS2 built into them. Then for a time some of them (usually the 80GB versions) used emulation firmware to do the same job, but Sony stopped supporting this years ago. Models after this never had it.

So yeah, you might have a PS3 that used to play PS2 games, but no longer does.

Not that is matters, but whilst I'm geeking out, the PS3 was a unique device, it used a really high-end (for the time)  and very complex CPU, which really was to it's detriment, it was very hard to programme for, so it never really reached the potentional of what it could do. They were also really expensive to produce.

Just tried PS2 GTA San Andreas on mine and it loaded up no problem.

From memory the cross compatible unit didn't last long as it was expensive to make so later 'fat' PS3's were PS3 only, as well as the slim version.

I dug mine out again a few months ago to have a mess about with the early Grand Turismo games and it was working fine for both PS1 and PS2 games. I dont know if this is possible but could you do a factory reset to remove the updates?. I didnt pay much attention to it when i was using it so this may or many not remove saved games as i cant remember if it was a card that saves were on or if it was stored internally.

Our Japanese early fat PS3 plays everything, but I recently learned it’s worth quite a bit of money because of it.

Should sell it really 🤣

My recollection is that the only ones that were backward compatible were the ones with the 3D PS3 logo on the front rather than the sticker.

mine has a 3d logo. I'm sure it was one of the very early ones as I bought soon after it launched.

I think its a 120gb version though, so possibly it ran of the software, which I wiped when being a good citizen I applied the updates....that'll teach me for thinking it was a good idea to bring it up the right patch level.

will see if I can find a way to revert back.  Nothing obvious so far
