which one should i get ?
The default response is - whichever one any of your mates have. makes playing online games more fun.
If none of your mates have either, then look at the console specific games out there...
If none of your mates has either I'd suggest the PS3. It's got a BluRay player, and BBC iPlayer and similar from the other channels work without having to pay a sub. Both work well as media players, but I reckon the user interface is much better on the PS3, and looks like it's been designed for the over 10s.
PS3 without question. Hard drives are swappable. I now have a 500gb previous 80gb ps3.

That has to be the best and correct answer.
but i am a PS3 player and love it.
(I have a PS3 as well 😉 )
Are you going to want to play online? PS3 online is free whereas Xbox you have to pay a subscription fee.
I have both. Nothing wrong with the xbox apart from sounding like a Trent spooling up but I prefer the PS3.
Really? Always preferred the 360, yes you have to pay for online play, but similarly it's a much richer experience.
Besides, I've never gotten in with the Sony controller, it's horrible to use.
Yup as mentioned see what your mates have.
Me I have both and the 360 has been gather dust now for about 2 years or more. PS3 has just had a new HD dropped in 500gb as my last one which I upgraded got corrupted, took a few minutes sort install patches then download saved game data from PS cloud. I much prefer the PS3 controller, interface and yes free online gaming is a bonus although with clever shopping Xbox Live is relatively inexpensive.
Really there's nothing much in it but the added 3D Blu-ray player on the PS3 is an attractive asset.
i'd go for the ps3 as well. With no subscription, it is cheaper in the long run. I do have one so I am very biassed but I was torn between the two at one stage as well. I was informed on how it was the better of the consoles at the time.
Ps3 and a proper remote then it's a games machine and 'proper' bluray player. The newer ones run silently too.
ps3 as you can do much more than just play games - I basically use mine as an apple tv, stream movies from my laptop, stream movies & music from lovefilm/netflix catch up tv with 4od & iplayer...
I even occasionally play games on it...
Have had both and still have an X box which I think Is better. X Box live much better than PSN , X box live is now around £26 for the year If you shop around and the Interface and downloads just seem way better. Downloading updats or games through the Playstation I used to find a chore as It was so slow. X box tends to get Downloadable content first as well that said Im not a fanboy and still think the PS3 Is a decent console.
PS3 +1
I'd have both, but have had an XBox since the very first one so automatically went to the 360. Live is better than PSN but is more expensive...go figure. Also, the XBox has all the 4od, iPlayer, 5onDemand, LoveFilm, NetFlix and loads of other on demand services now, with quite a nice and quick interface. If you watch quite a bit of Sky stuff (we do with Atlantic), then the Sky app is excellent too.
Either one really, there's not much in it - and it'll come down to which one your mates have.
Dd how did you get iplayer on your x box , I looked at the video apps and couldn't see a Iplayer one. ?
Thanks for any help.
Jeez, I dunno now stanfree, I installed it ages ago 😕 ...it's definitely there, as we've been using it the last few days - our sky dish was busted for a week.
No worries , I'll persevere. 😀
stanfree, just had a look:
you have to go:
Apps
then,
Apps Marketplace
And iPlayer should be in there, along with all the other in demand stuff.
I got a 80gb ps3 for sale 🙂 If interested....
thanks for the replies replies guys, will not be playing online ,and due to the fact i prefer the ps controller it looks like a ps3 , do i really need a massive hd ? , simon is yours a slim ? pm some details of what you got , cheers
Big hard drives are handy but not essential , I used to download loads of films and watch them on my PS3 . Also bear in mind 2.5" laptop SATA drives will slot into your PS3 and its a 5 minute job to update them.
PS3 for me as well. If you want more storage any hd formatted to FAT32 will work through USB.
Didn't know the bluray would support 3d but you still need a 3d tv.
As for games if you get a ps3, play metal gear solid 4 it's brilliant, probably be of the best games on the console.
All my mates have 360s, so that's what I have.
I think what your mates have got. Or if none of your mates have consoles, the PS3 is a better all round machine with the blu ray player (the 360 has got a lot of the VoD services now).
That said, I absolutely can't stand the PS3 controller, whereas I find the 360 one so much more comfortable.
Main thing to consider:
* Do you want to play with your mates online? If so, go with what they've got.
* Do you want to play online with random strangers? The 360's online service is better, but comes at a cost. It's community is a lot bigger, but also has more trolls as a result.
* What games do you want to play? Some are exclusive to each platform - the PS3 gets Uncharted and Little Big Planet, for example, the 360 gets Gears of War and Halo. Most are multiplatform, and although most of those will run better on the 360 (due to it generally being used as the lead platform during development), the difference is fairly negligible in most cases. There are exceptions though - the 360 version of Final Fantasy was noticeably worse than the PS3 equivalent, and the PS3 versions of Mass Effect 3, Skyrim and Bayonetta were a right dog's dinner.
* Controllers. It's nigh on bloody impossible to play Street Fighter to a satisfactory capacity on a 360 controller, but it will do a fair bit of damage if you throw it at someone's head. The PS3 controller is a great design, but weighs less than a small fairy cake, and is therefore useless as a weapon.
* Motion controllers - Kinect (360) or Move (PS3). Neither have particularly set the world on fire, but are worth taking into consideration if you have kids, or are interested in fitness games.
The other thing to consider is that the 360 has much better party chat options and is generally smoother when it comes to trying to play a game with all your friends. I avoid the trolls by restricting myself to party chat with my mates.
Xbox 360 all day long...ps3 is horrible on online
